This seems like a worthwhile reason to pause your shopping ban. I hadn't seen your toe issue but painful feet are no fun at all. I agree it is easier to know the shoes you are getting rid of are going to someone who will use and like them.

I genuinely think of this as a "health crisis" rather than a fashion splurge. I would not feel guilty for a second. If you can't be comfortable, nothing else is worth it. You deserve to be without pain. I'd enjoy the new shoes and not penalise yourself in any way!

Your new work shoes look great, and I LOVE the Christmas boots from DH.

I've been in this situation before, having not a single pair of shoes that fit comfortably (hello, pregnancy swelling coupled with backpacking swelling). Totally a legit reason to go shopping IMO. A no-buy shouldn't be about making yourself suffer. There is more than enough suffering in the world already. When something is a need, you just have to deal with it, and I would file these under "health" and not under "fashion" in the budget. High five from another member of Team Produce!

Janet, no worries. It's a permanent issue. The 3 middle toes on the right foot got broken back in the early 90s and they are a bit crooked now. The pinky toe gets smooshed up against the adjacent toe if the shoes are tight. I discovered this a few months ago when my pinky toe started hurting; an inspection revealed a very deep blister on the pinky toe and a fairly significant one on the adjacent toe. The forum wisdom had me staring at my toes for days trying to figure out what deformity/abnormality was causing it, and that's when I realized the toes are crooked. Its subtle, and is more noticeable when I actually put weight on the foot. It could probably be fixed but I don't have insurance. Thank heaven wide shoes solve the problem, now the trick is finding wide shoes that I like the look of LOL.
After a full day of no foot pain yesterday, I tried on all of my shoes and boots last night. I was able to tell INSTANTLY whether they were going to work for me or not. Thank heaven there weren't as many casualties as I had feared. It was pretty heinous, but it wasn't totally devastating. I talked with my 12-step sponsor about asking around to see if anybody wanted some expensive shoes sizes 7.5-8, and she was all "yeah, I'll ask around" non-commitally. When I explained to her that when I said expensive, I meant *expensive* and listed some of the brands... well, she had a little heart attack and put on her thinking cap and found a home for the shoes and boots that I am getting rid of: her baby sister was a SAHM and just got a job outside the home and she wears the same size as me so my sponsor is meeting me at a lunchtime meeting Thursday to get the shoes to take to her baby sister. Knowing that they're going to someone who needs work appropriate shoes makes it so much less painful to let them go.

Fun new shoes, and no judgement here from the lady who just bought a bunch of unneeded but happy little magpie statement socks! Yours are a need, so no problem. Besides i think shoes get a pass even without foot pain since they wear out the quickest.

The new shoe choices look terrific, and I can’t even begin to tell you how much of a pass you get on an arbitrary “no shopping” month when you have a legit emergency like foot pain that leaves you limping. But I am so sad you are having to let go of so many pairs of shoes/boots. Go easy and take your time evaluating. I may have missed the earlier explanation of the foot issues — is this something you expect is permanent or possibly temporary? Have you seen a podiatrist? Sorry if I’m asking for info you may have already shared.

Barbara Diane, the no-buy was just to stop the madness. When I lost my job at the produce stand, I bought interview appropriate clothes suitable for a job in fashion retail. Then I got hired at Old Navy, so I added a few more pieces that fit with the vibe I saw on the managers that interviewed me. Then I got offered more money to work at a grocery store much closer to my house that I had to take (because more money is a good thing, and I'm in produce which is a happy place for me even if it isn't clothes), and there are "uniform" rules about what I can wear so more shopping occurred. It was starting to nauseate me, all that buying; so I instituted a no-buy. And yes, I have a few pairs that are worth consigning if I feel like making the drive down to Dallas to do it at some of the good shops down there.

Thank you, all of you, for the support. Once again, you guys have come to my rescue when I was feeling down. You are all correct, that this was the kind of thing that merits exception from arbitrary rules I've set for myself. I'm always encouraging others to practice self-care, and you guys have reminded me that it applies to me too. So I now feel OK with the orders (foot health is important if I like doing stuff like walking), but I'm still resetting the clock on the no-buy. Making it more challenging for myself will make the tattoos and any splurge purchases that I reward myself with feel that much sweeter Hugs and kisses to each of you for reminding me that I'm worth taking care of XOXOXOXO

Definitely the best decision and I, too, encourage you to classify painless shoes as a basic expense, not frivolity. Shoes that fit and don't impair your stride are the same category as underwear and toothpaste..ya gotta have them. You are wise to give your feet extra attention. Permission granted!

What Angie said...a fashion emergency is no joke. And, when it involves painful feet it could quickly become a medical emergency if you don't get some shoes that work. Limping was your big clue and good for you paying attention to it. This is a totally separate situation from closet no-buy phase. It's too bad you have to give up all those shoes you listed...give yourself a moment to say goodbye and then send them off to a good place where they will end up in a new home.

I agree about the need for those shoes and I hope they fit well. Not sure if your challenge is about discipline, cash, or making sure you don’t buy unnecessary items, but if cash is part of it are any of your shoes that don’t work in good enough condition to consign?

I am with Bijou. Be easy on yourself, it is all fine, you have made a very sensible decision. And besides there aren't that many days to go until the end of the month, and by the time they arrive it may be 2 or 3 days closer to the month end.

Cindy Smith - this is not breaking the 'no buy rule' you would have been in trouble with us if you had not bought shoes that will help deal with foot pain. The 'no buy' is really about discretionary items that you would like to have but do not need. You need shoes that don't hurt your feet. I hope your feet heal quickly.

I'm a huge fan of these type of challenges, but I think it's always more wise to be flexible when the situation calls for it ... Clearly this was a necessary purchase and not a splurge; if I was you, I'd just carry on with your no-buy without penalty. Sort of like a diet ... Sometimes you have to make the best choice available, which might not be the perfect one ... Don't let it throw you right off!

I ordered 2 new pairs for wearing to work, which is legal under my terms of no-buy. But my off duty footwear was not good and I had to have something comfortable. It was bad, as in I was limping, and to not solve that problem was just stupid.

I got DH to buy me a pair of ankle booties for Christmas, but I needed something to wear now. So I ordered 2 pairs of shoes to wear when I'm not at work. I'm not beating myself up too much, because it was just ridiculous to keep dealing with foot pain for 6 months just because I want a tattoo. I almost decided that I was going to get around the no-buy rules by wrapping them up in pretty paper, sticking them under the Christmas tree, and thanking Miss Mollie for new shoes on Christmas morning. but I realized that: A) that left me with a lot of shoes that hurt for the next month and B) that was a major addict way to think/rationaliza/justify some major horse puckey

When they get here, there will be some heartbreaking decisions happening in my closet. I've already made a few, and put these in the donate bag:
Dolce Vita OTK boots
Stuart Weitzman kitten heel pumps
Steve Madden point-toe ankle booties
Coach pumps
The white sneakers I bought when I started having this issue

Potentially on the chopping block soon:
Harness boots
Coolway ankle boots
Aquatalia sandals
Edmundo Castillo stiletto ankle boots
Unisa OTK boots
Nine West OTK boots
Chinese Laundry sandals
Dolce Vita knee high boots
Nine West flats
Frye sneakers
aerosoles sneakers
Tactical boots
Stuart Weitzman sandals
Sak slouch boots
Calvin Klein sneakers
(Essentially, most of my remaining shoe collection)

Most of what is potentially on the chopping block next? Is flat or low heels, so they will go into a holding zone to be tried again when my toes quit hurting.

Part of me is thinking to myself: "well, you've broken the no-buy, might as well go all-in". But really, I can't think of anything I "need" or even really want right now; so I'm resetting the clock and starting my no-buy clock again. 6 months from today, if I haven't bought anything else? I get a tattoo.

Update: I broke down and bought one more pair because it's super-cyber-friday-weekend with shop-til-your-couch-breaks sales + stackable coupon codes with free shipping.
Because obviously, you guys are right, and I need shoes that don't hurt my feet. Today, wandering around in some wide width shoes I bought back when the troubles began, I have had exactly zero foot pain. I am too old :-), and have survived too freaking much, and work too hard at my job, to be limping around with smooshed toes in tight shoes. Between zulily & cyber-friday-weekend sale + stackable coupon codes with free shipping, DH and I just revamped my shoe wardrobe for a song, which is a lucky thing heading into his slow season at work.

* Pics 1 & 2: the shoes I ordered for work. Earth Origins lug sole ankle boots, and Taryn Rose Zanna hi-top sneakers. I've had good luck with Taryn Rose (they seem to run a bit wide), and they are soooooooo comfortable, so it was worth a try since Zulily had them for about half the average of any other store.

* Pic 3: the ankle boots DH/Santa are bringing me for Christmas.

Pic 4: sequin flats (wide fit) I ordered from ASOS. Because wide shoes don't have to look like boats, they can look like a sequin factory threw up on them LOL. All jokes aside, they're pretty and sparkly and should go with most anything.

*pic 5: a pair of miles ordered because they have a western feel, and western is hot right now, and western has that edge I like. Also a super-duper-cyber-friday-sale-deal+stackable coupon code with free shipping

* pic 6: the boots I just ordered. I ordered the black, but they don't show any other views in the black so I included the brown view from the top.
