Oh I so hear you. I did indulge in a little "retail therapy" the other day, but I can at least say that everything I bought was on my wish list and had a purpose. Now my wish list is very short and my reward drawer is well-stocked, so I envision doing very little shopping in the near future. Whew!

But if the last leg of my weight loss goes as planned, it will be only a temporary reprieve. Hopefully by then, I'll have my game all figured out, so I will purchase very wisely.

Mary, I am so with you. I could have written a very similar post and almost did, but then I didn't because I didn't want to say I'm sick of shopping and then post another K/R and get called out on it, LOL. I don't want to promise SYC but I'm at the point that I'm mentally exhausted and nauseated at the thought any more cycles of shopping/K/R/returning (shopping bulimia is spot on LOL!). If I weren't gaining weight I wouldn't have to worry about having to potentially get new clothes and just enjoy my closet, but I may need to keep shopping a little to keep up with body changes. I think I'm going to have to learn to make do with much less though, because I'm tired of the hunt! I'm shopped out too so I hear you sister!

I know that of anyone MaryK, you can do the 12x12--you seem to have a bottomless closet and are a genius at creative remixing. I've been following your WIW's ever since i joined and it still seems like you're posting new stuff each time. You have an amazing closet and sense of style and I think you'd be fine even on a strict SYC!

Hi Mary --

You have so many wonderful items (including the most amazing consignment finds) that I hope you enjoy the process of figuring out different or favorite combinations.

The downside of adding new things into the mix is definitely less time to wear (not-so-) old items that were chosen because they made you smile/look great -- it'll be fun to hear your insights!

That all makes so much sense, and you of anyone have the closet to allow you to do the 12 items thing. Honestly I am astounded by the breadth of your wardrobe and how you are constantly able to come up with new combinations, to which a miss picky-pants like me actually uses the word "perfect" to describe. Maybe I haven't always used that exact word, but the message was basically the same.

It is so eye opening when I see something online or in a store that I crave then I remember to shop my closet and find something similar that is just as good. It seems that you do have a lot of great pieces and lots of colors and patterns which will keep the SYB far from boring.
I love Angie's rule #2 and can't wait to see where this journey leads you.

I'm about 1 year behind you in my style journey post weight loss but I also feel shopped out already. I've bought more this past year than the previous 6 combined if you don't count maternity clothes. My wardrobe is nowhere near as fab as yours but I think I'm in a good place to sit back from the buying frenzy and see what I really need.

Once again, I'm finding myself nodding along with a lot of Gaylene's post. I'm a bit shopped out, too, Mary. I have a few birthday-month discount coupons from various stores, and I'm not terribly compelled to shop lately.

One exception: I *did* stop in one boutique the other night since its right next door to where I was grabbing some dinner, and I eyed a few pieces, especially a black tuxedo jacket with leather lapels, but in the end I picked up a metallic envelope clutch, which is something I'd actually had on a wish list for months, and it was a good bargain besides. Everything I looked and and thought, "That's cute," the thought immediately followed, "But I don't need that."

I'm going to allow myself a little suitcase space and budget for an item or two in Reykjavik next month (what a fab city for unique fashion!), but otherwise, I'm done for a little while. I have summer clothes I haven't even worn this season, and I am looking forward to wearing my fall and NAS items, so I am definitely in WEAR THE HECK OUT OF MY FAB CLOTHES mode!

I'm in much the same position as you are, MaryK. Overhauling a wardrobe after losing weight is fun, but I found it was too easy to go overboard when almost everything I tried on fit and looked good. Finally shopping was enjoyable instead of frustrating. But my credit cards took a beating and too many things were ending up unworn in my closet. And, to be honest, some of the items, once I took a look at them at home, just didn't fit my lifestyle or my wardrobe goals.

I've really tried to be selective these past months. Oddly, instead of feeling deprived, not jumping on every bandwagon or being lured in by every marketing pitch has made me more aware of my own style goals. I'm much happier with having one pair of well-made shoes than half a dozen pairs of cheap ones. That same principle goes for my clothes-- one great shirt, to me, is better than two or three so-so ones.

It's not easy exercising restraint when you are surrounded with messages to try this and buy that, but, like choosing to eat right, it feels like a much healthier way to live.

ETA: That's why I'm CHOOSING to sit out the boyfriend jean trend. I like the idea of a slouchy pant, but the (to my eye) overly casual vibe of the boyfriend just makes me feel sloppy. I'm looking for something more along the line of Angie's Theory pants. That will be MY interpretation of the slouchy look.

Here is support for you MaryK! You were one of my first respondents when I joined YLF so I have watched your outfitting with AWE and appreciation. I agree though you totally needed to reclaim the new self but this now has been fulfilled ---- So now the hunt for the perfect piece to match in so its just a refined game now! I made a determined effort to do the pieces 'right' coming into this new season and inadvertently re-discovered a local designer, have splurged crazily on maybe half a dozen pieces... I have not been able to get them off my back, I am getting compliments left right and centre, and I feel SATISFIED with my wardrobe right now. So somehow feeling that all the pieces go together and work for you means that the standard for anything else coming in needs to be high as well! Hope you get to that nirvana as well!

Oh good for you! I didn't realize you were still buying as we see so little WIB from you, but we do see all these lovely pieces! also didn't realize that you started this 2 years ago. I also lost weight about then but didn't find YLF til this year and repeated the same mistakes as I have all my life. I really hope I can be where you are this time next year, or does it take say two runs through each season to feel you have a good basis to work from for replacement and piff upates, but not major buying? 12x12 sounds intimidating. I feel I would fail.

I hear you! And have been thinking seriously, for the first time, of doing some sort of SYC. Maybe we can support each other!

For next year, I don't think 12 items is realistic for me. But maybe 24 or 36. I think 3 items a month is still less than what I've been averaging for the past 12 months.

I totally agree that buying fewer items of higher quality is an engaging concept. If I limited the number of things I purchase I think this would start to happen.

A great realization, Mary :)

WEAR THE HECK OUT OF YOUR CLOTHES. YLF's second official rule.

Shopping your budget is a superb idea. Be very mindful about what you add to your closet. Think about *the piece* and how it works as an item, an item that is part of an outfit, and an outfit that is a component of a capsule.

This is great food for thought, MaryK. I appreciate your sharing it. Your experience resonates with me, as I've spent the last few years renewing a wardrobe to meet my new lifestyle after leaving full-time work behind and moving to a new climate. I've felt that recognition of having a complete wardrobe yet realizing that each season I'll have the urge to buy fun new things. The one-item-a-month concept is intriguing!

Honestly Mary, me too. Where I am right now, is on shopping for specific items rather that just buying on impulse because something is nice. It's just too chaotic.

Plus, seriously Mary, to me what you own is as close to closet Nirvana you can get. You don't need a thing!

Looking forward to all the thoughtful purchase plans getting set for the end of this year and next! I am looking at a maintainable plan for the forseeable future myself.

I completely relate to this post, MaryK. My clothes-buying appetite is feeling really sated. I'd like to get a new pair of dressy shoes, but otherwise I'm in good shape for the rest of the year.
