I just renamed mine ponte knit skinnies...Mine aren't body con but rather slouchy on the leg, ready to tuck into the boot...
Thanks for the education...I think in some cases it is a case of word choice...

I'm still devoted to my Gap Leans from several years ago. I also can't stand excess fabric in my boot legs, so I'm not sure what else to wear with my tall boots.

I'm feeling pretty equal-opportunity though, and wear my Kut skinnies, COH straight legs and Gap slouchy khakis as alternatives.

I agree with Clara. Honestly, I've seen many so-called skinny jeans that look way more jegging-ish than a pair of patterned jeans I bought that were labeled "jeggings" -- they have full pockets, the calves are slim but not tight, and they are almost a twill-like fabric that has give but is not overly stretchy, so they don't hug every curve and bump the way some skinnies and all leggings do.

I do have a one pair of what would probably be considered jeggings (Democracy brand, they button but don't zip), but again, they have pockets and are constructed of a denim that has enough thickness to be flattering and very jean-like. I don't do leggings, so I'm pretty sensitve to the whole leggings-are-not-pants phenomenon.

All that said, I will continue to wear the ones I have that are comfortable and functional in my wardrobe, because I love them for tucking into high boots. I just haven't gotten into boyfriend cuts the way most of you have. Most of them are cropped, which I hate. Although today I am wearing a pair of AG "Tomboy" cut, which is actually full-length and not tapered at the hem. Hallelujah!

Honestly, I think that the distinction between skinny jeans with stretch and jeggings is a subjective one. I am thinking of getting the Karen Kane jeggings that have gotten favorable reviews to use with tall boots and chunky/longer tops this winter. I tried some Gap 'skinnies' that were so thin and tight that you could see my knee caps and defined calf muscles. Oy. Not a good look.

Basically I'd like a pair of dark-rinse slim-fitting pants that are not too thin a fabrication and that easily tuck into jeans and don't bag at the knees. I don't care what they are called, as long as they look good and are comfortable

I have a couple of pairs of skinny jeans that I think might actually be jeggings. They are very body con., but seem to work for me if worn with a more voluminous top that's not too short. I'd say my legs are average, but I'm not sure. Some cropped pants I bought at the beginning of the summer, and have worn repeatedly because I love them so much, have tapered legs; some reviewers have complained that they're too narrow. They work for me. Maybe my legs aren't as big around as I've always thought they were.

I think of leggings as knits and jeggings as leggings made out of denim (woven) with the usual jean accoutrements (zipper, pockets). And I haven't worn mine for over a year either ...

Thanks for the clarity on this. I don't have any mostly because I feel like an encased sausage when I try them on, like I will suffocate. I do have some skinny calvin klein jeans for boot tucking which I still like. However, I like the jeggings on others

Jeggings are extremely body con. Pants that fit like leggings. I had a Gap pair a few years ago - and wore them for precisely three months and was done.

I wear tailored skinnies or slouchy skinnies tucked into boots for bad weather. Far less tight.

Suz, thanks for the clarification. I'm inclined to agree with your definition of jeggings. Actually I think there's a bit of a grey area between jeggings and true jeans, since so many jeans are made of fabric with a substantial amount of stretch these days. I've seen (but never owned) garments labeled "jean leggings" that are really just leggings with a denim-like finish, with back pockets but a totally false fly. Other jean leggings have a real zip fly and back pockets, just like skinny jeans, and the appearance of front pockets but you can't actually put your hands in them.

Actually I do own a pair of black skinny jeans that might actually qualify as jeggings, as they fit the latter description, but they are very comfortable. I guess I think of them as jeans and not jeggings because they are substantial enough not to require a top with full-butt coverage, whereas jeggings generally do. They sound like the DL 1961 ones you describe, Suz.

I don't have trouble with fabric bunching in my boots or around my knees when I wear skinny jeans. I guess my skinnies are pretty tight on me. Having said that, I rarely wear tall boots with jeans, unless the tall boots in question are wellies (in which case there's lots of space). I'm more of a short boot-with-jeans gal. My tall boots normally get paired with skirts.

Thanks for the definitions, Suz! I have a closet full of stretchy skinny jeans that could probably qualify as jeggings, and I adore them. But I hate actual leggings. Just not substantial enough for me to feel comfortable enough in. And they look too young ON ME. But they do look great on women of all ages. I am done with shrunken blazers. Make me look top heavy and not comfortable. Yay boyfriend jacket trend!

I think manufacturers contribute to our confusion because they all use different terminology.

To my mind, a jegging is essentially a calf sucking jean (in Janet's brilliant phrase) with more stretch or perhaps different stretch in the fabrication than a typical skinny, and an even slimmer calf and knee area. It has the stretchability of a legging or ponte pant, but the details of a jean -- button and zip, real pockets, etc.

But because we all have different body types, we'll perceive these issues differently. For some, ANY skinny will be calf sucking. For others, even an ultra skinny will be flapping around on their calves.

I have learned to read calf size openings. That often gives me the information I need about how a jean will feel.

In terms of fabrication, the jeggings that I happen to have purchased are heavier than most on the market. I have tried on jeans at places like Zara, Urban Outfitters, etc. and many of the GAPs offerings. Those are super thin fabric that I agree would provide zero insulation. For me it also provides less than zero figure flattery, so I have never purchased jeggings like that.

The ones I did buy (and will save for reluctant wear with tall boots) are two premium pairs. One is a DL1961 high waisted denim -- the denim itself is as heavy weight as a regular jean, but there's more stretch in it, or 4 way stretch or something that allows it to fit snugly at the knee and bounce back. Very sleek.

My other pair are reversible Bleulab jeans. The reason these are more substantial is that they are exactly what it says -- reversible! They are coated on one side and denim on the other, and because the fabric is layered they are actually my "winter" jeans! They're quite cozy.

What is the difference between jeggings and ultra skinny?

I had bought a pair of what I think are jeggings in a fancy hosiery store. They were like thick leggings, in a sheathing girdle-like material that vaguely resembled a very stretchy denim. They cost around $60 (Canadian).

However, I could never seriously wear them on their own. The fabric was too stretchy and revealed every extra curve from my legs and behind. Using them under tunics or long sweaters, like I would any other leggings, was the only option for them. They were even less comfortable than normal leggings because of decorative buttons unfortunately placed which would poke my buttocks when sitting down.

Recently I got a pair of these: http://guessbymarciano.guess.c.....4W1617100Z
They are the absolute skinniest jeans I have ever owned, very close to leggings. Except... they don't reveal every lump and bump. I still can't believe it and hope they won't stretch - or if they do, that they will do it in a nice forgiving way.

Yup, I'm with you on jeggings. I wore mine ONCE this season and felt blah all day. Out the door they go!

Irene, in my mind jeggings are leggings that look like they are made out of denim, but with a fly and pockets, though often with faux pockets. High percentage of s.t.r.e.t.c.h. (i.e. skin tight) Funnily enough I am still comfortable wearing black leggings all the time, even though I wear them both the same way (although, only as Una said, everything north of thighs covered).

Totally agree! But I do love leggings, and I'm looking for some insulated or fleece-lined leggings. They are the best things ever! In the States once I found a pair of very thick leggings for cold weather that were so comfy I wanted to wear them every day. But bravo on getting over the jegging fad! LOL

I still love my one pair of grey CoH jeggings. Although to be fair I'm not 100% sure they are jeggings, or just stretchy very skinny jeans. They are woven and 98% cotton/ 2% spandex but somehow very stretchy and soft and don't bag out. (I think this is one place where premium denim really has a leg up on non-premium.) They are also several years old, back from when jeans all still had at least a 32" inseam, so they have scrunch too.

That said, I'm happy with the one pair. The more recent incarnations of jeggings have been sub-par in my opinion - lots of polyester which makes them itchy and sweaty, and they all seem to have the dreaded 29" inseam (which on me is a super unflattering just-above-the-ankle-bone length).

I still love my Gap jeggings. I can't stand much bulk in my boots, so I need a very slim legged jean to wear my tall boots.

I need some definitions. I have a pair similar to the Kut ones Angie just posted and I think of them as jeggings. They are fairly fitted stretchy jersey type fabric and I would not show anything north of thighs with them. Are we talking fit or fabric differentiation?

I still love my super skinnies, my leggings, and my jeggings. But only with boots, or heels. With ballet flats I look like a big bird, (ostrich maybe?), with my long skinny calves and then my flat feet sticking out below. Ha ha. But I wear boots almost every day and heels the rest of the time. In winter the boots get paired with a big sweater and thick socks, so I stay pretty warm.

My legs/rear are the parts of my body I like best, so I dress to flatter those and add drapey tops. I feel comfortable with showing a lot of my shape in form-fitting clothing because I don't show a lot of skin (no sleeves shorter than the 3/4 length, no skirts shorter than midi length without opaque tights, etc.)

Real skinny jeans are too tight in the calves for me so I could never fit into them. I wear straight leg jeans which fit me pretty much like skinnies - but they are not very streamlined tucked into tall boots and got bunched in the knees which drives me crazy.

Sveta, I agree with you. I'm not loving the -- how was it that Janet put it? -- calf-sucking tightness of jeggings either, on me or anybody else, really.

Why don't you just wear skinny jeans? You'd rock them.

Beth Ann, I think slim pants look great on a lot of body types, especially tucked into tall boots. I bet they look good on you. But don't you find that skin-tight jeggings are so tight that they don't provide much insulation?

It's not that cold where I live, but I've heard people sing praises for fleece-lined leggings. Might be worth a try.

I passed mine on as well, almost did not wear them last winter at all. Which in turn posed a problem (high five, Suz!) - what to wear with tall boots in winter? I have bought ponte pants this time for this particular purpose but tall boots and tunic-length tops is all I am going to wear them with.
I don't find jeggings flattering on ANYBODY anymore, not just me: I guess I really moved on...

Angie -- yikes, I'm behind the curve again!

Florence, I can't even imagine a pleather skirt! I know exactly what you mean. They look cool, absolutely, but I just know if I tried one I'd end up in some sort of predicament like Ross Gellar in that episode where he goes to the bathroom at his girlfriend's house and can't pull his leather pants back up. Remember his desperate whine: "...and the lotion and the powder have made a paste..."?

Suz, maybe your jeggings and my jeggings are not the same. Mine are flipping freezing in cold weather, and yet totally unbreathable in warm weather. They are quite thin fabric. My skinnies are also form-fitting, but not quite so much, so there's a thin layer of air between my leg and the pants that serves as insulation. Plus they are all more of a normal weight denim. My skinnies mostly don't bag out much at the knees, either. Although I might tolerate more knee-bagging than you do. :-)

I'm like Suz, only they're far less flattering on my body type, unfortunately. I still love them on some people though, and I think fleece lined heavy tights might be in my future.

I wish I could be done with jeggings. Sadly, with my weather, it's unlikely to happen. They (or any similar kind of ponte or stretch pant) are really useful when it gets snowy and you've got to tuck into boots and don't want bagged out knees. But I'm telling you, I refuse to wear them this year for any other reason or in any other weather. I got so sick of them last year. I have a strong aversion to looking at outfit photos of mine that include them. I don't find them flattering in the least on me.

Mine are more substantial than the ones you describe, because I would never dream of wearing them in warm weather. (See Claire's recent post on denim and denim terminology.) And they do provide some protection from the cold. (At least as much as my other jeans).

But still.
