Angie and Rachylou, thanks! I thought the shape was better with the band, wasn’t sure if that was real or wishful thinking. Appreciate you taking a look.

Finally got back to the tailors to pick it up. What do you think? Is the bottom elastic tight enough? Do the sleeves look right?

So I stopped by today, wearing my blue/yellow/black plaid jacket so I could show her exactly what I want. She said the welt (yellow) on the plaid jacket is heavier than the material for the body, but the material for the body of the new jacket is much heavier than the elastic/ribbing for the welt, so if she made it tighter it would stretch out after just one wear. That fabric is indeed kinda thin, and might just be ribbing with no elastic. I don’t see why it would bag out so easily, but I assume she knows her stuff. We discussed for a minute. At first she wanted to send me around the corner to get tougher elastic to make the welt, but then I popped back into her shop to ask specifics on exactly what I was supposed to buy (I think she wanted me to get something in just the right color). She wound up saying that she had elastic to put into the currently-existing welt to make it tighter. I go back on Monday. Fingers crossed it’ll be ready for me to take when we fly on Thursday! (I asked if it could be done earlier—no, because they are redoing the whole shop tomorrow). I have faith that we will work out something acceptable eventually. Neither one of us is a native speaker of German, so our conversations about welts and ribbings and things kinda make me laugh.

Aw, thanks Synne! At this point, I don’t think it would cost any more to have the waistband taken in—I paid for them to take it down a size, and the waistband seems unchanged, so they haven’t finished the job, and I haven’t picked it up yet. Also, I much prefer the classic varsity jacket shape, with a welt at the bottom. As Annagybe points out, I have no clue if that’s “in” right now, and don’t really care, but it’s what attracted me to these jackets.

Annagybe, I hadn’t considered getting a new item tailored/altered as upcycling, but I suppose there’s a similarity. The jackets are made from remnants, so they are classic upcycling in that sense.

Your posts are always such an adventure Fash! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.

If I understand, you had the jacket altered because you felt it was on the larger side? It looks totally fine now, let sunk costs be, and don't spend any more on alterations. Wear your jacket with a smile! That would be my advice.

Yeah what Irina said. The style is completely changed, to something less current. But if you’re happy with it

Clarifying, I realize you don’t necessarily care about trends, but with upcycling stuff, it’s a very tricky path.

Angie, thanks so much for weighing in!
We didn’t discuss the sleeves at all—they just kind of fold that way by themselves—but I see what you mean. So I will ask them to do that and make the welt tighter. I assume the sleeves will have to stay as big around as they are, because that’s how big the holes for them are. But is there anything else that should be changed?

It's a tricky alteration, Stag! As Irina suggested, and I agree with her assessment.

The welt needs to be tighter for a more blouson effect. The sleeves seem long too. I see you've tucked the cuff under - do you think so too?

Well, your tailor altered the shape of the jacket. It used to be a bomber jacket style and now it looks straight. To get it the original shape but in a smaller size, the band on the bottom needs to taken in, as you yourself noticed. It is more complex alteration - I think the band has to be removed, cut smaller and reattached. Good luck!

Oh, no, not any shorter!
I meant if the band at the bottom should be shorter around/tighter. Not actually tight, just not hang down as it does now. Maybe stronger elastic but the same amount of fabric.

Pic 1 in the original series shows what I mean. In 7 you can see that it does that even on the hanger.

So, after the pink one was snapped up out from under me, I grabbed the blue one, because it was still there. After living with it for a couple weeks, I realized it really was too big.

I went ahead and asked the tailor to take it down one size. Went to pick it up today, and I’m not sure I like the result. What do you think? Take the bottom in an inch or two so the welt is a little tighter and the jacket blouses a little bit? I’m wearing a fairly heavy sweater underneath it. The kids were running the store today. I left the jacket and am supposed to go talk to their mom tomorrow or the next day.

Thanks for helping!

Back to thinking about the jacket size. Where, specifically, is it too big? I think the shoulders are ok. I’m thinking of asking my tailor, who is quite low priced, what they would charge to alter it, but I don’t know what specific changes to ask for prices on.

And Rebekahphoto wins!

I had no idea the market would be so bisy today, so I got here 2 hours after it started. It’s packed! Yesterday, there was no one else at the rack of jackets. Today, there were several people, and the maker couldn’t keep up putting jackets back on hangers. The burgundy jacket is already gone. :(
I had such a hard time deciding between the two though, that I didn’t mind getting the blue one. Feels like a bit of a cop out, because I would’ve had to think much harder about making outfits with the pink one, but sometimes easy is good.

About the hats—making one with a different fabric is no problem, and they are not that far from where I live.

Now comes the question of price. There are no tags on any of the jackets. She said they’re usually 150, but 99 for the fair. Then when I tried to get contact info so she could meet me at the gate and I wouldn’t need to pay admission again, she said she’d just knock 9 off the price. So she’s already started the negotiation process by arguing against herself.

I feel a consensus growing….

I was sure I wanted that one, until I tried the blue on. I have mentioned before that I am a sucker for that shade of blue; here’s proof of that. But the blue one is definitely roomier, and the pink one is in no way too small. Tomorrow, I’ll wear my thickest sweater and go try on the pink. I’m 97.5-100% certain it will fit.

Assuming I get the pink one, would it work with the tweed hat? Maybe I want to see if she has the same tweed, but with a different color on the reverse.

Tomorrow is the last day of the market. I followed several vendors on Instagram, but the woman who makes the jackets doesn’t have a social media site, didn’t want to give me any contact info, and although the others are all based in Berlin (the name of the fair is “Made in Berlin”) she is based in Cologne, several hours away.

Now, as I see the details and colors of the first jacket (grey - burgundy - pink), I think it would be my choice…

Adding pix of my current pink and blue outerwear to the original post. I don’t think you guys have seen the parka yet. It is lightweight, like a puffy, and is my warmest coat. It’s over 20 years old, but was in storage for half that so is in good shape. I picked it up from my folks’ in April.

About the hats, do you guys think I should get the one in 13-15, or that I should look for similar with navy instead of black? Also, I'm adding a note to the original post that the last row of hats are reversible. 11 & 12 are the same hat, and 13-15 are all the same hat.

LaPed, in the Cartesian season, I like wearing my statement on the outside. But the pink one isn’t boring either.

Approprio, ah, I see. I keep things lively, but try to avoid going “full Nina Hagen”, as Synne put it. It’s a fine line I walk.

L’Abielle and Irina, thanks for chiming in, with your cold-weather life experience.

I vote for a grey/pink, too.
Hats are not my thing, So no suggestions from me, sorry.
