Angie, you are a sweetheart and such a caring friend. I recall your posts about your work with Fernanda as some of the very first I read and that attracted me to YLF. Fernanda, I am so relieved that you and your sweet Dulce (pun!!) are both doing well. Our world is struggling so very much in this time of climate change. Wishing your comfort and strength in this time of upheaval.

Angie and Fernanda, thank you for the update. I remember your beautiful YLF feature many years ago but had forgotten that you were based in Mexico City. I'm so glad you are okay but am incredibly sad for the devastation you and your neighbors have experienced. This is horrific.

Thanks for your thoughts on this, Angie. It's so hard to read the news these days yet the stories from Mexico and the Caribbean show the best of humanity in the most difficult of situations.

Fernanda, sending every good thought your way. I remember YLF "meeting" you in past posts, and it's good to hear you and Dulce are safe.

Dear all,

I have limited internet but wanted to thank you for your kind words.
Angie: your post warmed my heart in ways I cannot describe. It helped go through the first hours of shock, disbelief and sadness.
What you say is spot on: the tragedy is overwhelming, but even more overwhelming are the sights of wonderful people helping 24/7, under the rain, without pause. It's the kind of thing that makes you believe in humankind again. I'm lucky to have made it, but also to be reminded that we're a great species, after all.
Love to all the YLF members.
Fernanda.

THANK YOU for your empathy and sweet words, ladies.

Chris, shelters have come a long way, thank goodness. (You wouldn't get me into a shelter without our dogs).

Oh Joy, keep us posted.

Aquamarine and Sis, good memories. It's the same fabulous Fernanda, who is a dear friend.

Style Fan, you're a sweetheart.

I am in contact with Fernanda (and Dulce) several times a day for updates. They are doing well - all things considered. They are happy, cozy and safe "camping" with family in an apartment that was not damaged. She is proud of her country right now - and with good reason. People helping people - and dogs helping people - is sublime.

Some updates from Fernanda. The people are organizing themselves beautifully and selflessly:

Her apartment building is very damaged. Standing, but un-liveable. Engineers are figuring out the next steps.

People in the street are offering food, hot meals, and water 24/7 to all.

Medicine is being piled up for those who need it. AMAZING.

Cell phone chargers are left on windows sills so that you can charge your phone.

And Hero Frida has saved more lives than anyone.

The scenes I see on TV are scary. I am glad to know that at least they are well organized and know how to handle this disaster. Also glad to know that Fernanda and doggie are doing fine. Would you believe that when I first heard about the earthquake she came to my mind? I remembered an old blog post about her. Sending prayers.

Also....the US govt relief agencies got themselves better sorted after hurricane Katrina....probably similar to what they sorted out in Mexico after the 1985 earthquake. The three biggest changes I heard about after Katrina were getting the various agencies to work together, allowing pets in shelters (huge), and admitting they could not do it all and asking for help from the public during the worst of it. If only other parts of the US govt could learn so well from bad situations....

Between this earthquake in Mexico and the one just a few weeks ago, and the (now) 3 severe South Atlantic hurricanes doing so much destruction in the past few weeks it is so heartening to hear the stories of everyday people doing what they can to help each other. Similar stories have come from Houston, Florida, and the Carribbean. You are so right about it being uplifting.....thanks for sharing and glad to hear that your friend and her dog are alright.

That's amazing to hear. I didn't know Mexico City had gotten so organised, although I know they improved the building. Second bad quake in Mexico in the past week. Many of my colleagues have friends and family in Mexico City. So far it has been good news, although one shift manager... has an aunt someone will have to go on foot to look for... communications down. So prayers for her.

I am so happy for you, and for Fernanda and Dulce, that they survived the hurricane. Destroyed is such a strong and descriptive word, and the news has been so devastating. I am glad to hear that people are pulling together in such an awesome way, and that they were more prepared this time. In contrast, I think I have my head in the sand.

This is a very positive message about humanity. And we need that this year more than ever in the light of the turbulent political climate across the globe.

Mexico City was hit badly by another earthquake yesterday afternoon. I have a dear friend - Fernanda - who lives there with her doggie, Dulce, whom I adore. She let me know as soon as she could that she and doggie were fine, although her apartment and city look like a war zone. Destroyed, was the word she used. She evacuated with her doggie, and were one of the lucky ones. They are staying with friends who weren't as badly hit it seems. I was very worried, and am now of course - extremely relieved.

I've been listening to updates about the quake in the city, and it has blown my mind. Mexico City is extremely prepared for these types of disasters because they took it upon themselves to GET SORTED after the devastating affect of the 1985 earthquake. As a result, every one knew what to do, and almost everyone is helping out. Volunteers - of all ages - are streaming in from every surface of the city to do what they can. Pulling rubble out of buildings with their bare hands. Directing traffic because there's no electricity. Providing food and water to those in need. Assisting medical professionals. Providing fold up furniture for shelters. Creating shelters. People taking strangers in out of the goodness of their heart. And the list goes on.

Fernanda said that to see humanity pulling together like this has been extremely emotional. It brings tears to her eyes. I can only imagine how it lifts spirits in times of utter desperation, and gives people hope. I'm choking up writing about it...

To those in Mexico City, our thoughts are with you as you care for the wounded and rebuild your city. You are a shining example of what is good in this world. Thank you for the reminder. xo
