Thanks for the reminder, Mo. V good point about that. Mamapicklejuice's point about threads being easier to scan for the time-poor is very well taken too.

Re the a la Indienne, I'm sorry to have made a hash of it. Did mean to explain, bit of an aside joke on Indian menu planners' tendency to make foods understandable to the West but also sound posh my saying a dish is really 'potatoes a la Indienne' or what have you. Then was in a rush to ... uh... rush to work, so forgot about the explanation and neglected to change heading to English.

Agree with difficulty of acronyms, but also agree with some need for shorthands in order to not constantly refer back to particular blog posts (fast fallback outfit) or threads (urban warrior princess), especially if we're to have a conversation among so many within our time constraints. Completely behind the glossary idea, always have been. But also: I think we're all friendly people more than happy to explain an acronym when a newbie asks... so I'm hoping not as much of an issue either.

Question though, what happens to handles that are longer? Like my own long name or Christieanne's, or monikers like Alaskagirl or Goldenpig or Ironkurtin, where it can be hard to know where to curtail the name (Clearly Claire or HeleninCanada or Transcona Shannon is easier). I for one often find it hard to type out a long handle repeatedly in a longer comment, or if posting in a rush like from a short break at work --- I'd rather not have a *handle* of all things reduce my participation when I'm short on time. But Mamapicklejuice, would you feel uncomfortable acronymized to MPJ? I know I'm quite comfy with M (or MM) instead of Manidipa. But people often choose their monikers early on, without having considered this impact because they've yet to have started threads which require replies! So... also a thread for preferred monikers of the short and sweet persuasion -- a la Mo or Una? or preferred abbreviation -- a la M, MM, or Moni, or hey, Angie

I didn't even know the FFBO one and i've been here for awhile @_@

I feel sad that people feel annoyed or left out. I'm like Rae - i tend to use them because i don't always have a lot of time and i'm trying to get through a lot of posts quickly and sometimes just because i'm too lazy. But if i run across one that i don't know i just ask...or make up my own meaning in my head. XD

Thanks so much for bringing this up, Mo. I've been feeling pretty confused by all the acronyms. Most of them I eventually figure out, but I often just feel annoyed and left out because I don't know what they mean.

I am very familiar with acronyms like DD, DH, SO, BF, that are in common use across internet forums, but I'm always having to do a search to figure out what certain YLF-specific (or is it just style-blog specific?) acronyms mean. It took me forever to figure out that FFBO meant Fast Fallback Outfit, and that BBQ meant Buy Buy Quick. But there are many others I still don't understand.

I was one of the earliest members of a particular internet forum that became a large, very supportive and tight-knit community over the course of almost 15 years, so I do understand how easily shorthand develops among people who have come to know each other online. On that forum we were always being accused of exclusivity by newcomers, but I never really understood how it felt until becoming a newbie here! On that other forum, we did eventually create a glossary thread for common acronyms and in-jokes, and other phrases that might trip up newcomers, and I wish YLF would do that too.

I have to admit this is a pet peeve of mine (turning everything into an acronym). I keep seeing these "what does xyz" mean...by veterans, no less. And if you are tight on time, it's soooo much easier to scan the forum when all the words make sense!

Frankly, I'm afraid a glossary would just encourage more YLF-only shorthand. There is only so much this tired old brain can handle, people! :P

Maybe I'm just not cool enough for acronyms.

As one of those who gets super lazy and uses lots of shorthand, I apologize if it seems exclusive. I really am just that lazy and in a rush! I do love the idea of a sticky thread so we can all still use the shorthand without leaving anyone out.

Yeah, Freckles, in the context of an invitation I get it. Out of context on a fashion board, minus a letter, I do not. Not a french speaker, so it wouldn't occur to me. It's just easier to expand a little bit when possible.
Like I said, I try to write out Shop Your Closet/ Budget when I start such threads etc. Not a huge deal, just looking for all of us to understand each other

How well I remember the evening I spent countless hours (probably minutes) searching the forum to find out what CM stood for. I finally had to ask -- and it was Club Monaco! That was waaay back when the only acronyms seemed to be store names or well known brands. Now we have our own YLF lingo!

I'd love a glossary too! I think every forum develops its own lingo, and a "sticky" glossary would help newcomers feel included more quickly. Acronyms - especially the hilariously long ones - can be fun, though!

I work for government and it drives me batty that we make an acronym for everything. I sometimes ask at meetings what they mean.

SVP - s'il vous plait (thank you in French) - I assume

Gotta say I'm feeling stupid today

no idea what the Levant is
or
TCPITW
or
la Indienne
or
SVP

And I admit I don't have the patience to look up what any of them are!

I myself try to explain, say CPW, by writing out Cost Per Wear in my thread with the capitol letters before then abbreviating. I know Annagybe has mentioned before that acronyms can sometimes seem exclusive and I see why.
Here is another request for a You Look Fab online glossary (which I've been behind for some time) and for those with not easily understood terms to please explain!
(Says the gal who didn't know for months what the heck DS, DD, DH meant! And I still wonder, why the D's???)

That's all from this soapbox for now Thanks!
