More merino love! My merino tees, tanks and hoodies are basics, great for travel, pack easily, tie around the waist for sightseeing. The only downside is they're a traditional cut, not very stylish on my petite hourglass shape.

My preference for softest, silk feeling wool is "I O Merino" and I just received the new Zone stripe tee, a slouchy style with a curved bottom. It's fantastic and capable of converting anyone :)

More merino T love here. I like Patagonia for them as well as Icebreaker, havnt yet tried Smartwool but i did just order an Arcteryx merino long sleeve T from evo.com at a super cheap price. I use mine more for gear than fashion purposes, but they are awesome to run in even when it is warm outside. I am planning to try everlane for some cotton t's this year as well.

I have a couple of short sleeve merino t's that are older than dirt. I really like wearing them on Christmas day as the temperature in the house varies wildly. In the cool livingroom I add a cardigan but it in hot kitchen with ovens and all burners in use it gets really warm. The wool keeps my both warm and cool and there is something about the short sleeves that work really well here.
I also really like them in the spring or even in the summer when camping.
They are good during hot flashes too!

I highly recommend merino for base layers. If they can be stylish too, nothing is better! I don't have a large tee collection, but I recently added a crisp white basic v-neck tee to my collection. It was on the expensive side, and I hope it will withstand washing and wearing well. I bought it because it had all I'm looking for in a white tee: Perfect fit, not sheer, and of 100% soft cotton. If it keeps what it promises, I'll buy one more in grey.

Seriously, though, there is such a wide variety in what constitutes spring tops.

I personally like 3/4 length tops made of a nice heavyweight jersey for casual wear. I buy mine at Talbots or Nordstrom's. Plain colors, the occassional pattern, usually from Nordies.

I also like Ann Taylor for these. Thin light weight cotton sweaters (although sometimes too thin as I bought one that got a hole after the second wear!). Or wrap tops.

More casual pieces, I still like the GAP and Old Navy for basic tees. Land's End sometimes too. I can play with DD in these, go to the park, on walks, whatever. If she gets grubby hand prints on me that don't come out, meh, it's not a huge loss. I like the longer length you can find on these, and the fits can be generous. But none of these are long term pieces. Maybe a year or two before it is time to replace them.

April, here is a description of merino wool from a backpacking magazine :

Why Merino Wool works so great:

"Merino wool comes from a special breed of sheep in Australia. Their wool has to work for them to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer, which then translates into the garments made from their wool working for us.

The long, fine hairs are extremely soft, light, airy, itch-free, and actually wick moisture away from the skin (something only merino wool does since it has a capacity to absorb up to 30% of its own weight of liquid and then release it in the air as vapor.) The wool is extremely breathable, which makes it great for hot summer days and is the reason our kids didn’t sweat when wearing it. "

And from Sheep101 :

Warm and cool
Wool is comfortable to wear in both warm and cool climates. This is because wool is an absorbent fiber. When the air is cool and damp, wool absorbs moisture and keeps a layer of dry insulating air next to the skin. When it is warm, that same absorbtion capacity takes up perspiration and keeps insulating dry air next to the skin, making the body's natural cooling system work better.

This is why explorers wore it. It has both cooling and warming capabilities. It has an incredible ability to insulate and wick moisture but has amazing breathability for when it is hot. It is my favorite fabric. I wear it in the light and ultralights in the Spring and Fall.

To your question. I wear the short sleeves under a blazer or sweater in the spring and fall. If it warms up, I take off the blazer and still feel very comfortable, even in sunlight. If I sweat, it dries practically immediately and giving a refreshing feeling, unlike cotton. In the evening, it is a great base layer under the jacket again and adds extra warmth. This also works well for me when it is cool outside but I will be somewhere inside where I will get hot. I never overheat the way I do in heavier knits. The durability is so amazing, that I will wear it at home when I am cleaning. If I get really warm, I take off the top layer and wear the T. It looks so much more refined, too. I find it a versatile, miracle fabric. I always travel with one merino wool short sleeve and one long sleeve t. ( In very high heat, I like linen over light weight woven cotton. )

Anyway , I hope that helps.

Peri, I will also add that I have really gotten a lot of use out of my Lands End "fitted lightweight cotton modal" tees. When on sale, they're ridiculously inexpensive, but they are soft and comfortable and wear well. They come in scoop, V, and crew neck, long and short sleeve, in many colors.

The "fitted" shape is a closer fit than their "relaxed" shape, but even so, these run a bit large.

Thanks everyone!

Isabelle, those T's are really pretty..I particularly like the purple design one. I can't do Merino though...wool doesn't work for me or my climate, and I was really thinking of things I could get hot in.

Overall, I think maybe T shirt was the wrong word. What would you all call this kind of top?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ch.....e&

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ei.....hoppingbag

Those are some I have looked at. I think that it is opposite of my usual shopping problem, I see a lot of things I could like, and just don't know how to narrow down. I should just make a few good guesses for now and then hold off until closer to season?

Can I ask the merino tee fans to elaborate yet a little more? I'm having a hard time understanding when I would be cool enough to want wool yet warm enough to want a true short sleeve.

Isabel, thank you! That is super helpful! I am starting to plan for warmer weather, and some basic neutral/white tees are on list. I would love to upgrade from my usual Target stuff. Wool and wool blend has about a 3 in 10 chance of making me itch these days. I think it is because of winter and the lack of humidity indoors, not the wool itself.

Hi La Belle...they are not like JCrews. These are really lightweight, but have a good warmth punch, particularly when layered. They are great under jackets and I don't over heat in them. . I don't find them itchy after a couple of washes. Even my 10 year old, who is really, really sensitive about fabrics, wears hers and doesn't complain. It is not as soft as cashmere, but sometimes, I confuse my merino wool with my cottons ( camis ). To me, they feel more like a soft, mid weight linen. Backcountry has a great return policy if you decide to try them. : ) Icebreaker has some really pretty ones. I have a couple of really pretty long sleeve ones, I wear a lightweight cami with those for extra warmth. But I can wear my short sleeve ones through early June ( I live in MA ). I have camis, long sleeve Ts and a couple of short sleeved ones. They also dry really, really well and insulate well from sweating.

I LOVE my long sleeve ones too. I have a blue ombré version of the grey one. And the long sleeve version in grey of the yellow. I get tons of compliments on them....like that matters ! LOL

And they don't pill, at all. ( also available at http://www.moosejaw.com , I have done business with them and they are reputable. )

I have an Everlane t-shirt and love it. I normally wear an XS but ordered the S because the XS was sold out in the color that I wanted, and it fits perfectly slouchy. I want to order more this spring but can't decide which size; I might get one of each for a slimmer fit and a slouchier fit (would be awesome in white). My current tee goes through the dryer regularly and hasn't shrunk noticeably, if at all.

I've been disappointed by how James Perse shirts have held up. I don't think they're worth it.

I'm loving woven tees right now. They skim over any lumps, and as I lose weight, they just get more fluid. Dress up and down easily. I don't mind poly (easy to wash), but there are rayon and silk options too.

I got some merino tees at Costco this year, they are amazing. Don't fade, keep their shape, don't get stinky... I didn't wear them on the hottest days, but they were awesome for most of our summer. Not itchy at all. Mine are plain, love the graphic ones posted by Isabel.

Ooooh! Merino tees? That sounds really interesting.

I was going to say James Perse tees. They have neat styles that have collars and button plackets, sleeve tabs and other details that make them a little more than just a plain tee shirt.

I like JCrew Perfect tees for fit, but they fade. I like GAP ribbed tanks for fit and for no-fade.

Isabel, how 'wool' are the merino wool shirts, in comparison to say, a J. Crew Merino wool sweater? Any itchiness? Those tees are so pretty, I may order one and see when the weather warms up.

I LOVE my lightweight merino wool T shirts. I have them in long sleeve and tanks. I just ordered a couple in grey and black. They wash well, keep color well and keep their shape well. I wouldn't use them in the middle of summer.

They get softer after you wash them a couple of times ( especially with fabric softener ). The two below are both Icebreaker and Smartwool has some too. But all of mine are Icebreaker. You can google them because prices can vary greatly. I get most of mine on Backcountry.com but Sierra Trading Company online and Amazon sometimes has great prices too. I just got a grey one from Backcountry for $39 ( they can run around $80 ).

Good luck in your search.

I tossed ALL of mine in the big purge as being tighter and shorter than I currently like, plus worn out as well. Now I have none!

It's early, but not really. I've been having occasions where I wished I had one...hot spells still in early December. PT appointments where I was going places after and wanted to look acceptable, and yet sweaters are too hot for PT.

The problem is I don't even know what I want! I know I love the sheer top/cami combo for more dressed up and I know I want better than gear or just plain T shirts. Something in the middle of those two. Casual, but refined but interesting.

What do you like in this category?
