I think rabbit gives good advice, to keep them on at least initially and see how you feel.

I have never worn cargos, but my recollection is that the ones that would look dated are a looser fit. These look like skinnies, which I think is a bit of a new twist on the cargo look (?). I think that these look modern to me, FWIW.

Yeah, sewing the flaps down is definitely on the cards for these if I leave the pockets on -- they have no closure at all, so not only stick out at the edges but flip upwards.
Rabbit, thanks for the first-hand commentary on your experience.

Love the look of the pockets, but the flaps don't work so well on me. They tend to bend up at the edges and stick out, adding volume where I definitely don't need it. I'm about to take my cargo crops to have the flaps stitched down.

I think if you like RATE or urban warrior or hard edge looks at all, I'd try keeping them on first, they look great to me!

I've been seam-ripping off some decorative stitches on a pair of black skinnies that bothered me, and it's not as straightforward or invisible a job as I thought it would be so I would do that only if you really decided the pockets weren't for you.

Today I thrifted a pair of these Hudson skinny cargos that appear barely worn -- no fading of that lush deep black colour. The rise and length are spot-on, I like the fit through the leg and after darting the back waistband to accommodate my curvy butt / sway back, they make my butt look great.
But! I'm a smidge unsure about the pockets. Does it make them look dated? As I said, the jeans aren't faded at all (I wonder if they've ever been washed, given how fast black jeans go grey), so I think I could unpick the pockets without any tell-tale darker patches. Or should I leave them on in the interests of something a bit different?
