Echo on "Howard Stern"

My home style is probably more colourful and "maximal" than my personal style, but that is likely because I feel I cannot get away with wearing the things I really love. For example, I always dressed DD in coordinating colours but different prints when she was little - like a polka dot tunic or dress and striped leggings. And yes, I would wear those same things if I wouldn't look like a clown (except I would, so I don't). So I feel I can use more colour and detail in my home than I would in the way I dress (though my home doesn't - I hope - look clownish).

But it doesn't surprise me about Howard Stern. A lot of what he does is purely for shock value; he has always been one of the original "shock jocks". Except that doesn't necessarily reflect what he acts like or thinks in his personal life. Indeed, I sometimes think people like that need to have their home life completely separate from their public personas. Either that, or I just think that if Stern is the way he is on-air in his personal life then he is a waste of air.

And a big shout-out to approprio! More recent pics of Julian Cope still send me reeling. I remember his fresh-faced youth and sound from "World Shut Your Mouth" and "Peggy Suicide", so in my mind he never aged.

You just crack me up!

In the mid-90's I had a 1 hour commute in the morning, and I alternated between Howard Stern and NPR (when he went to commercial). So, his house probably would not have bothered me.

What was the rest of the point here? Couldn't get past "Howard Stern"!

Rachy, I'm honestly not sure. The "reasonable" would have to mean acceptability in society. I've been a reenactor for nearly 20 years and I'm well acquainted with the interesting reactions I get in "normal" spaces. I also do costuming (i.e. dress up in costumes and Do Things), which also garners lots of comments and questions. To be honest, I don't dress to blend in much even nowadays... but 18th century, Jane Austen, or Edwardian is a lot more strange and noticeable than that.

If public attention and suitability wasn't a factor... yes, I think I would. But just like now, I would not limit myself to one particular style or historical period, and I might do it only occasionally. Regency (i.e. Jane Austen) is by far the easiest and most comfortable to wear, even with stays. It's also the easiest to move around in. So I'd probably spend most of my time in it, if not my present style. But 18th century (esp. 1780s) feels really awesome, with or without a wig. (Wigs: Easiest hairstyling ever. Followed closely by caps and bonnets.) I'd probably rearrange the furniture in my home to wear 1860s hoops easier, but it's also lots of fun to swan around in. Apart from the number of pieces it takes, it's arguably the most comfortable. (Also fun to do unexpected things like sprint when necessary, or sing soprano!) And I would love to go a LOT more 1950s and 1940s than I usually do; big fluffy petticoats are awesome even at an office desk. There are plenty of other eras I want to play in and just haven't gotten around to making yet, and I have an awesome reproduction shoe collection that definitely needs more wear. :D

But I would also have to rearrange my schedule a bit (in addition to the furniture). Getting dressed in these things does take more time, not even because they're complicated; it's just more pieces. Exactly how it takes me longer to get dressed in winter than summer.

...That's probably a whole lot more answer than you were looking for! :p

The Kong inflatable e collar might not be appropriate for all dogs and all situations but when it is, it's great.

My clothes are about how I feel in them and how I want other people to respond to me. My home is about how I feel in the space and how I want to feel when I'm sharing it with other people.

While my family was living all together we had only the furniture we needed to be comfortable because I wanted the space to be easy to clean and move around in and because by nature, I like space. I've recently inherited some superfluous non functional furniture and objects but their role is sentimental, storytelling and visually beautiful and they are still easy maintenance.

Few people are able to change their furnishings on a whim. When we set up our household 35 years ago, it was mostly thrift store chic. Gradually we bought quality furniture, and now, that's that. My taste has changed, though, and if I were to do it again, I might skew a little more modern. In fact, if I were to buy a new house, I would look for modern and energy efficient (for this house, I wanted good schools and a nice sized yard). The other part of the equation is my husband. I don't get to decide everything, unfortunately. My husband has opinions about a few things, and so much of what we have is a compromise. I wonder if that is what happened in Howard Stern's house.

Interesting question! For me, neither fashion nor decor go together. Y'all have figured out that my style is heavily retro (to 40s/50s). But I don't have many retro touches, aside from a (new) chrome & formica table and chairs set in white and yellow, and early 1930s jade green glass and platinum candlesticks. I do not like the contemporary aesthetic at all, and I really don't like MCM (Mid Century Modern)! Nor do I like heavy-handed Early American c. 1960 - golden oak everything. The 1930s/40s Early American is a bit more classic with walnut tones.

I actually prefer a blend of antique and anonymous modern for comfort. Comfortable modern couches in the main living area, combined with chinoiserie side tables and a milk glass lamp. Antiques include a piano, dining room set, marble-topped end table, and 1840s dressing table, my pride and joy. The back room has a reproduction mid-Victorian parlor set from Craigslist, and a Federal eagle convex mirror from an antique mall. Bedroom set with 4-poster bed. Groupings of botanical etchings on the wall. It's a real mixture, and I like it a lot, but it's a lot more early 19th century than mid 20th. If I could choose a single aesthetic, it would be the Federal period into American Empire.

My décor and fashion sense go together. I always use earth tones when I decorate. My furniture lasts a long time (like my clothes). I use fairly simple pieces of furniture and then dramatic accessories. There is a relationship to nature in our art. I don't think I realized that until now. It isn't really obvious but it is there. I invest in real art and really good pieces of jewellery (scarves, etc.).

I redid (well, "did") my house a year or so ago and I think it's pretty close to my clothing style -- colorful, maximal, eclectic. But I don't really see the two as all that closely related. It's just that I like what I like...

Isabel, Joy - How different would you say your decor is from your clothing style? My decor style is eclectic, so mix and match, but I don't know that's a choice, hehe.

Bonnie, Deb - Like souls Lilypup's big influence in the decor is a hassock she can doggy den under!

I would not redo my decor to go with a personal style revamp, but I can't imagine changing either one so drastically that there would be a disconnect.

I do have similarities between my tendencies in home decor and personal style. I'm attracted to contemporary styles, clean lines, and a fairly limited color palette, but I love some color, print, pattern, texture, and well-crafted detail. I like a mix of soft and hard, and I am most comfortable in the middle ground between minimalist and maximalist. I loathe clutter. I like soft, sturdy fabrics and leather, and I like some hardware and shine too.

The detail about Howard Stern cracks me up, and somehow the Julian Cope curtains don't shock me. I still picture him from his Teardrop Explodes days. "And when I dream, I dream about you..."

I'm at work on my phone... I have to come back, I really do... But to start...

Approprio - ohmigosh, Julian and Howard should do tea I noticed something tho about myself... I think I'd take it better, feel less of a contrast, if a woman was dressed like that and had big cabbage rose decor.

Mochi - Howard would totally say 'string' Too much fun!

Rabbit - Ah! The grocery! A whole other level of complexity to add...I forgot... ;)

Torontogirl - I feel *it's only logical* that preferences would be consistent...like Mr. Spock...but then there's the factor of things you can't choose. Maybe Howard had no choice? (Wife ruled supreme? Lol )

Ok. My lunch break is over. I'll be back!

I am finding I am doing just that but out of necessity. I used to live with a black Labrador retriever and two grey standard poodles. Now I only have Arlo, my blur merle cardigan Welsh corgi who is mostly white. My clothing purchases are now mostly white, grey and light colors. My new bedroom is now done in grey and white with black accents. I am having my 34 year old chesterfield recovered for the second time with a lighter more modern fabric. Hopefully the white dog hair will not show as much on both, my clothing and furniture.

I never put the two together but we redid our home style two years ago from Country French/Old World/Shabby Chic/ Eclectic style to a very simple Modern. When we finished, I became interested in redoing my style. It seemed a natural progression. (And my style is not Lagenlook which is just a fun, maybe side style in progress; my style, tentatively, is possibly Arty Tomboy).

Interesting about Howard Stern! My home decor style and personal style are pretty similar ... Casual, pretty classic, soft, neutral and relatively minimal ( if it weren't for my darn family on the house side, that is ) I can't imagine changing either one too drastically without changing the other, as they basically reflect the same set of visual preferences.

Lol I love approprio's pic

Hm, my decor has more world market and a lot more teaky earth tones than how I dress. Although I have been wanting to switch out some embroidered throw pillows for plain ones... In both clothes and home decor more and more I like modern looks (although not super modern, more mid-century) and less clutter, but I like the unexpected and I like bold accent colors.

The Victorians must have constantly been tripping over their end tables and knocking over knick-knacks. It's true you would look pretty decorative wearing angry romance in a Gothic house... but I'd be tempted to relegate it to a floucy nightgown or two if it felt too off at the grocery store.

BWAHAHAHA, I'm laughing because my mom back in the day used to have a gallery on Long Island and she made custom wall hangings which were textural. Anyhow, she somehow got a commission to make one for Stern when he was still married to the first wife. And I remember my mom making a joke about Stern (not really, but imagining him on air, saying)--"My wife paid $20,000--for STRING!" Eh, you had to be there! AND it would have been in the 90's, surely.

No I would not. Here's a picture of Druid rock legend Julian Cope at home with his floral curtains.

So...all my thought of Laura Ashley has reminded me of Howard Stern. Why, you ask? A zillion years ago, Architectural Digest showed his home and it was severely SEVERELY traditional. I was aghast, made ill, at the contrast between his leather jackets and greasy looking (to me) long hair. Not that I hated his fashion style, it was the contrast. I don't think I contrast so much with my own decor, but I worry...

...Yes, I have returned to the issue of matching the decor and architecture again. Would you redo your outfits if you redid your house?

ETA: I bought a lampshade that I'm going to return... too modern for my new digs...but I fear I'm going to start crocheting antimaccassars soon and this is why I'm liking Angry Romance right now.
