Hmm I think it might also depend on what is appealing about the outfit to you. If it's the silhouette, you could easily swap the individual pieces for more wintery colored ones (nice deep jewel tones, crisp whites, black or navy, etc.). But if the low contrast coloring is also an appeal, that's a bit trickier. In that case I'd say you could don a low contrast version in shades of white and light gray, with some deeper charcoal accents. You could also do a darker version with cobalt and navy, or plum and fuchsia. And a slightly more rustic version with whatever your core neutrals are but leave in the cognac accents.

I have your colouring and I find I need contrast as well as deep and cool colours. So, switching the coat for a mid-tone, even one of "my" neutrals like grey, just wouldn't work on me.

If I did this outfit, I would pick a dark/moody floral on a black background (maybe even all-neutrals, like shades of grey and white on black) and a ruby coat; or maybe cobalt; and black boots.

The alternative would be a black coat, in which case there needs to be lighter contrast somewhere. Either lighter boots (grey? taupe?) or else much lighter colours in the dress (again, pale grey flowers on black). Somehow black in both the boots and the coat seems to be moving farther from the inspiration picture, but if I kept going in that direction, I would end up wearing a black dress and black boots (with maybe a white or grey scarf?) under a bold black and white patterned coat.

For your guidelines on how to adapt, look at Angie's suggestions when she does an ensemble (like today's, or the tomato/burgundy/toffee one); she will switch out which piece is the print or colour, give options for people with different style sensibilities, etc.

I would switch out the dress for a similar one with the white and grey but blue/green/purple accent colors and then pick a strong cool color for the jacket. I think the boots are fine or you could switch them for grey or black.

Essentially use the shapes from the inspiration in colors you love.

Does chocolate brown work for you? You could try that in the boots and coat, and pair it with a dark floral dress. I agree with thimbelina that shades of gray would also be very nice.

Swap the boots for black; find an oversized floral dress with exotic/tropical leanings in a cool palette colorway; and finally substitute the warm camel trench for a different winter friendly neutral (you probably know better than me what those might be.) If you kept everything keyed to gray or winter white you would end up with a similar moody tonal feel I think.

http://www.polyvore.com/fall_d.....=128271264

The above set, style-wise, is so "me." However, my coloring is more of a deep winter and the dusty colors and pinky-beige coat do nothing for me.

Are there any guidelines one can follow to adapt inspirational looks to compensate for "technical differences"?

Thanks.
