You might think S-M-L could work for flat chests, but I don’t think so. Those are often crude compression bras, with no lift at all—the worst on me! For an example, see my Athleta tryon pic earlier this summer.

Great article! The last time I was fitted for a sports bra, it was in a running shop. They did have me mimic running to test for how well the bra fit. I can see the value of looking for a roomy changing room the next time I shop for bras in person!

A side note, not directly related to the article: According to the most recent bra fitting I've had done, I am a 30D.

Hahahahaha! Admittedly, that fitting was a while ago and some things have changed. But even on the day of the fitting, things were all over the map and I did not wear the same size in all bras or bras by different manufacturers.

At the moment, I own bras in everything from a 30C (an unlined Mimi Holliday comfort bra-- which truly *is* comfortable but being unlined is not suitable to all situations/ seasons) to a 30 DDD and a 32 DD.

Yes, those are supposed "sister" sizes (the last two) but...I tried their "sisters" and nope --- those sizes were not equivalent (or not on me). Note also that most of my bras are by the same manufacturer (Natori) whose cups sizes are clearly smaller than typical. But even within that company's offerings, I have bras that range from 30DD to 30 DDD to 32 DD. Each style is a bit different and fits differently. Thank goodness for the NAS so I could try and compare -- otherwise, ugh.

Anyway, it makes a true joke of S-M-L sports bras!

Robin, yes! LOL it makes no sense to me.

I also sigh and walk away when I see cute bras in Athleta, etc, only to realize they stop at a DD cup.

I can definitely understand how not having a supportive sports bra could make a difference in how well you exercise, especially with high impact. I generally do lower impact so it isn't as important. But I get really annoyed by sports bras that come in S-M-L sizing. Does not work at all for larger breasts and a smaller body. When I see that sizing I immediately walk away.

Seriously!

“So during running for example, we saw a reduction in stride length of four centimetres when women ran wearing poor bras with poor breast support. And four centimetres doesn’t sound like much, but if you look at that over a marathon distance you lose a mile in distance if you ran wearing poor breast support. So there’s lots of positive benefits to getting it right.”

I imagine this is even more important for larger breasted women because there is more weight potentially moving on your chest (I’ve read that larger breasts such as a 32G can weigh as much as 2 lbs each). I can definitely see how having inadequate support would slow me down (and I was already a slow distance runner!). When I started running, the first thing I got after the proper shoes was a proper bra designed specifically for high-impact activity. Those old yoga bras weren’t gonna do it.

Lol, what I need to find are some of the crop tops that look like bras they talk about. I keep coming up with compression garments. I don’t need that, unless I get a tennis racquet or join a soccer team again. And I really don’t “need” the way they make my two peas on a breadboard look—mashed peas, not my favorite!

Thanks for the post. I may send this along to my nieces who have more in that dept than I do, and who are playing higher-impact sports.

Indigoprint - one would think so, but if you read the article, it's more about fitting for sports bras and finding the right support for certain breast types and types of activity. And in the end, the article still recommends trying on many different styles.

Maybe??? I do not understand why bra fitting is so hard. It seems a basic measurement...under breast and over breast ratio. Why do some manufacturers have you add 4 inches?. Why do some measure above the breast and some below? No one intentionally measures wrong.....
In addition the sister bra thing....if I am a 38 D how can I possibly fit into a 36something?? It seems as if a 36 would strangle me?
