Okay, I've read this whole thread and I've been thinking about the question for days, and here's what I've come up with:

"Businesslike bombshell."

Does that work?

And yes, Angie. I think Greg and his buddy described you perfectly!

This has just been the most fabulous read!! Thank you all for sharing!

Angie I LOVE the descriptions of you and think they are spot on too - very similar words to the ones that were forming in my mind too!

As for me, no idea how you would describe my current style, but I have worked out that I am undoubtedly modern classic at heart.

I'm craving the refined, calm, simple but elegant look that I see MC as being. (I think its very relevant that these are the words I'm craving most in my life in general - calm, simple, etc!).

So as of now, I'm working on refining my wardrobe so that its more true to me. I'm just struggling a little bit in my mind of reconciling modern classic and my very very casual lifestyle... but I feel like I'm slowly getting it in my head, so now just need to put it in action!

I think my style right now would be modern classic. I go mostly for basic items that I can change and bring up to date with shoes and accessories. The pieces that are too stand-alone soon get boring for me. I fight an attraction to boho but may use a bit of ethnic fabric, pattern or jewelry mixed with more classic pieces.
My ideal would be what Greg said of Angie's style. "Elegant, modern yet retro, on-trend (or trendy), unexpected, and very polished". As I said once before, I really want to look like those fabulous older French women. How do they do it!?

I think I have a few different styles, depending on where I am. With work clothes, I would say I'm the ubiquitous modern classic, except for my shoes, which I think have to fall in the bombshell category (all super high heels, high-end designer, bold, etc.).

My casual (not at work) style, however, could probably be described as...twee. I know that's not necessarily flattering, but I really am drawn to things that give a cute/adorable vibe.

For non-work and non-casual (dressy occasions as well as going out clothing), I would describe my look as bombshell, and I'm going to steal Greg's descriptive term and say modern but retro (at times).

I'm definately in the process of figuring this out. I'm trying to narrow it down. I'm not artsy and edgy. Maybe classic, a bit trendy, and flirty? Practical and boring also come to mind as I am a stay at home nursing mother with a small card buissness. I will have to keep posting pictures to get some opinions I guess.

Thanks Jonesy, Kari and Sara for reading my description. I'm pleased :)

I don't have the time at the moment to back to each comment and describe how I see your style. But if you're interested at all, post a separate thread asking the question and I'll off my 2 cents there.

Queen Mum, thanks for the novel. I loved reading it and would like to draw attention to it on a separate thread. It shouldn't be so buried away!

Wow - what a great thread! I have really enjoyed reading everyone's responses! Thanks everyone for sharing! I'm kind of floundering with my style. I'm not sure what I am - but I know what I want to be - risky, avant garde(ish), artsy, unexpected. But in reality I'm probably more CA casual with a touch of trendy. Bummer. That just sounds so boring to me - and so predictable. I want to surprise! I want to wake people up! I want to be noticed (in a good kind of way) because what I am wearing is so unique, so creative, so weird (but working!) that people are shaking their heads in wonderment at the fabness and the courageousness of my outfit! No surprise that I love Lady GaGa, huh? I'm also a big fan of Tilda Swinton's style.

Kim - I would say most of the individual elements of your style are modern classic, but you put them together in unexpected ways. I can't think of anyone I know who dresses like you do, actually. I would describe you maybe as funky modern classic.

I know where my DH "Flat" description of my style comes from, he dislikes all the browns, "dead colors" like he calls them, that I wear most of the times!
Once in the blue moon when I buy something bright he tells me: "That's your color, look how it light's up your face, blah, blah, blah" LOL
I feel like he is right, I can see my whole face lights up when I put on a turquoise, aqua, coral or tangerine color top, but I'm afraid that is to much and I will stand out to much!
Anyone wants to join me in the "Wear More Color Challenge"?
AJ, you hit the nail on the head by saying "get creative with the styling" yes, I so need to work on that!
I can put on a belt, necklace, or bangle and before I leave the house I take it of and it stays at home, how crazy is that?
Kim, I need professional help also :(:)">?

Is irregular a style persona? Definitely not polished like Angie and Taylor just to name two, maybe striving toward a bit funky with my attraction to certain vintage and fringe looks. Like Maya I am full of admiration for how some people can put together an outfit out of unpredictable pieces.
Queen Mum, I am around your age, with one less child, and I think you look great in the outfits I have seen, even if we don't have similar style labels. I enjoyed your thoughtful post.

I'd say I am American sportswear classic--classic with a twist--going back to Claire McCardell, Slim Keith, early Lauren Bacall and later Anne Klein, (the original real-life Anne Klein, somehow brought up-to-date. In the past few years I've slipped into blobbiness as the fashion cycle turned into girly ruffles and boho looks. It's a challenge to keep up-to-date yet true to myself when the waistline varies as much as 3" within a few weeks. Most of my friends and relatives have opted out of fashion, so I don't have buddies to travel this strange journey into aging.

Queen Mum, I always enjoy your posts. I too am a middle child between two sisters, a challenging position to occupy.

Queen Mum, I think you've hit on a really important point here - so much of what we wear and what we want to wear isn't just about our personality and lifestyle, or what's in fashion. It's about our history and how we relate to other people. It's why it can be a touchy subject, and why I think everyone here values YLF so much. Here we can get an unbiased opinion that's based on wanting *everyone* to feel good, no matter their circumstances.

MPJ- I started to reply this morning to your comment/question... but had too many thoughts running through my head.

"Wow, people really don't want to be modern classic! I'm starting to feel bad!
Is modern classic/preppy really a fashion cop-out?"

Now that I have pondered this all day I have even more thoughts. Here is where I, personally, am coming from on this....

Remember in Grease, when Sandy, the cute, sweet "modern classic" was mocked by the Pink Ladies for her "goodie-two-shoe" ways? Then in the end, she went through a transformation of style (and behavior) that suddenly deemed her one of the cool girls. Not that I have a huge need to be "cool" but I guess having spent my whole life as a goodie-two-shoes, prim and proper gal, there is a part of me that wants to flirt with the other side of the coin.... funky, edgy, unexpected, etc. But, reality sets in and I realize that is just not me. I can play with those elements, but at the end of the day, I am a boring 45 year old housewife who needs to dress accordingly. *** Note that I"m exaggerating to make a point here.

I wonder too if there is some leftover middle child syndrome at play. My older sister always had the edge over me in sports, music, school, popularity..... So, perhaps I have a underlying desire to make a statement with my wardrobe to counter that. In my mind, anyone can do modern classic well, but doing edgy, funky and the like takes thought and gets noticed more. AGAIN... I'm not making any judgments on anyone's style persona... these are my own skewed perceptions.

And finally, (and I think this is a biggie)... several years ago (7 to be exact) I experienced a very painful confrontation from my very best friend regarding style and clothing. I won't bore you with the details, but it left me feeling like she was the one who got to dress fun and cool, and I was supposed to be the boring, predictable one. Rest assured, we worked through that little issue and she is still my very closest friend, but I know that there is still a part of my heart that is a bit tender from the whole thing.

SO, when I say things like "I have to settle for safe, modern-classic", know that it is a thought that is being filtered through 45 years of an array of life experiences. It has nothing to do with what I see all you fab ladies here sporting ;-)

Did anyone actually make it to the end of this novel? Any professionals here want to take a stab at my mental problems? haha...

I'm not sure where we're getting our terms. Am I missing someplace on the site where the different styles are defined? Link?

Anyway, I just read the "Lucky Guide to Style" (or whatever it's called -- don't have it here at work) and according to that I'm pretty clearly a combination of American Classic and Bombshell. I think that's probably right. I like to look pretty, I like to be interesting but don't mind matching, I have a large chest so that dictates a lot of choices right there, but I want to be reasonably modest and appropriate. Oh, and I love color!

I really don't know...
I would say modern classic, elegant, sophisticated, with a dash of trendy and romantic.
?

I'd say my style is casual, outdoorsy, western. I don't mean a cowboy western look but using western elements like Navao jewlery or a fringed vest now and then. Jeans are my staple( whenever it isn't so hot that I can't stand to wear them). My big challenge has been to create a casual wardrobe with a touch of chic.

But just once in a while I like to dress up in a great dress and heels to go out. The challenge is to find anywhere in a western town where people do dress up.

I'd say it depends on the day, really, but I always try to mix classy with edgy, if that makes any sense. Like pairing jeans & lovely, feminine jumper with combat boots, for instance. Shoes especially always have something edgy. People define me as cute and classy but, at the same time, I can notice people staring at me like I'm wearing something weird, so that must mean something.

I'd say that I am about 70% modern classic, 20% bombshell and 10% bohemian.
