Rub n Buff is excellent but since I don't keep any on hand anymore, I use
black nail polish. I'm pleased with results and usually use a thin coat to let some metal through to make it look more antiqued.

So many great tips, thank you all!

I have the sandals in attached photos as house shoes. So comfortable, so well made, I haven't thought much about their style. Funny to become aware that esthetically I do prefer something sleeker, more architectural.

On the other hand, I don't live in a fashion-conscious area, so dressing in my actual preferences would draw the wrong kind of attention.

Too much work, what if the ink rubs off on your foot or they scrape your foot if you remove part of the embellishments? There are so many options out there, i would keep looking.

I'm thinking the heel and shape of these sandals lend some of the boho vibe. They are fairly subdued boho, though (I mean, we're not talking fringed suede), so I'm wondering if they wouldn't blend fairly well with other style elements you wear. I have a pair of Think! shoes that are kind of boho, too, and I do wear them with a lot of different things. My style is generally "elegant eclectic," though--which, hmmm, I guess may be a kind of boho style.

I've used a Sharpie Paint Pen on metal -- specifically zipper pulls -- with success. (Make sure it's the Sharpie Oil-based Paint Pen, not a regular Sharpie.)

I think that the contrast (light) stitching brings as much "boho" to these as the buttons - so, I'd also consider polishing over the stitching so that it is black as well.

Plastidip, from Lowe's or Home Depot will give it a pretty cool matte finish. My BF did that to the metal grill of his previous Audi. It adheres to metal and stays until you pick it off. There are tutorials on Youtube, you just used painters' tape to tape off the parts you don't want to plastidip.

If it's the shine that bothers you, you could try steel wool to give it a brushed look. Also, like K. suggested, a metal oxidizer could be used to give an aged patina. However, I don't know how well that will work depending on what kind of metal the buttons are.
Both pairs are cute and look very comfortable. Good luck on finding a solution.

Have I complimented you lately on your excellent taste? I own the first pair from a few years back, but that year they just had a black enameled button with a bit of a hammered look, so I lucked out! I would choose the first pair, snip off the frilly edging and get some metal oxidizer from the craft shop for the button. Or, because I'm cheap, I would raid my nail polish supply (or the grocery store's) and just brush dark nail polish over the top of them and I bet no one would ever know!

Two different sandals by same maker, both feel great.

But the metal button on the first pair is too bright, and on the second both too bright and too filigree.

How would you darken the metal? I don't think a sharpie will do it. ;)

In both cases, the button shank is part of the structure, so they can't be just removed. The metal on the second pair could probably be removed entirely, but would need to be replaced with something because the button is narrower than the strap is.
