I think my hair does express my style, in fact my hairstyle seems to be part of my "signature". I have worn a short bob for years. I have at times tried a new style for while but always come back to the bob. For me the bob is short, sharp and neat I like nice clean lines in my clothing and I think my hairstyle works in well with that. I am very OCD re my hair and wash and style every morning. I also have it trimed every 4 weeks and coloured about every 6. I agree with a comment earlier that it can be difficult to achieve a stylish look if your hairstyle doesn't work for you.

yellowgirl, best of luck at the hairdresser, look forward to seeing the new 'do'

Such interesting responses! I have a hair appointment first thing tomorrow morning to try to tweak my hair style a bit so it's more in line with the direction I want my style to be going. I'm actually going to use my style adjectives to describe to her what I'm looking for.

KTK - thanks for the photo of your gorgeous red hair!!

Mrs. e, you are right. I don't know that RATE is necessarily less effort, though one may contrive to look one just rolled out of bed looking attractively disheveled.

However, for me I think it originally grew out of my desire to make less effort (i.e. "I like the scuffed look because I can't be bothered to polish my shoes" or "I don't feel like tucking in my shirt all the way"). I hate ironing, and I remember someone saying to me once, not very nicely, "Wow, you pull off the wrinkled look really well." There is such a thing as too RATE!

Mine is not a reflection of my style. It tends to look either very "soccer mom" or very "16."

I am much more edgy and artsy and like something more angular that shows off my more masculine, angular facial features because I like playing up the contrast between my jaw and my full lips or my bone structure and my curvy figure.

However, I am currently letting my insecurities and people in my life keep me from doing what I want with my hair.

@ AlaskaGirl: "My hair is naturally sleek and polished, so it takes effort to RATE it up, which seems against my RATE philosophy of not making too much effort."

very interesting, to me, RATE is an aesthetic, not an idea of how much work you want to put into your look. for me, shorter, RATE hair is always more work and fuss than a longer, sleeker 'do - but i love that rougher, more antique-feeling aesthetic so for me it's no contradiction at all.

i've gone back and forth between short and long - either way i like it curly and rowdy! right now it's shorter and has more of an 'edge' to it, it is much more in keeping with my overall style than it was before i cut it. it's not that my previous look fought AGAINST my style, just my look now reflects it more. and it's encouraging to see so many here agree with me that your hair and makeup choices are an integral part of your personal style! steph

Gorgeous, KeeptheKey! I love that it's just a tad past natural color, very pretty.

I think my hair does reflect my style. Changing my hair was a big turning point for my style. It used to be way past my shoulders and curly. I cut it when I realized it looked a little too much like my high school style (and I'm waaay past high school). I wanted to look a little more sophisticated and modern, which for me translated to a sleek (or sometimes wavy) bob.

I struggle with this one! My hair is naturally sleek and polished, so it takes effort to RATE it up, which seems against my RATE philosophy of not making too much effort. I also get bored with my hair easily; most recently that's been remedied with color rather than cut, but I feel a cut coming on. Long flowing hair is a very Indian look and I sometimes aspire to it. Other times I long to be Halle Berry-ish... Sigh.

(Also wanted to add that I do change my hair depending on what I wear, and have found it to be a huge boost to the integrity of my outfits. If I'm wearing something that's sweet, I'll wear my hair in a tougher 'do. If I'm wearing something that's sharper, I'll leave my long curls down. If I'm wearing something that's more classic or lacking whimsy, I'll toss my hair in a super high pony. Or use those hair effects to further one aspect or another of an outfit.)

Good question, and fun responses! I wouldn't say my hair is a singular representation of my style, and in fact, I use it as a counter point. My overall aim is for an urban look. With very light skin, very dark hair, and an angular face, if my hair was cut and styled in line with my clothing style I could easily come across as quite harsh. I always leave my curls free and natural (actually it's usually cut a bit choppy!) so it counters any severity that comes out in my clothing; it adds a lovely organic element that's otherwise missing from my style.

(KeepTheKey I LOVE your fiery red 'do, it really highlights your gorgeous eyes!)

I don't really have a style. Its something I'm trying to work on, though. But whatever evolution my style reaches, it has to go with my hair.
My hair is a part of me. Sometimes a spikey pixie, sometimes a shaggy wavy bob. Never combed, always accented with a purple swath down the middle.

Actually, I think my hair is better representation of my style and personality than my clothes are! I have VERY orange-y red hair, and it's pretty obvious that it's fake, but I love it For me it's very fun, a little edgy but still girly. My profile picture doesn't quite do it justice, so I'll add some reference

While I think that my hair suits me and my style, I am not sure it really *reflects* my style or my approach to style. The truth is that I adore fashion/clothes/shoes/accessories but I am not really interested in hair. I want it to look good but I don't really want to spend much effort doing special things with it. Doing my hair/getting it done bores me and I want to just wash, brush, and go. I'll spend 20 minutes in the morning trying on outfits in the morning and playing with accessories and stuff, but I don't even want to spend 2 minutes on my hair.

I'll admit I am lucky because I have very very good, thick, healthy hair and it is straight and extremely well-behaved so it still looks pretty good even with zero styling. I do not blow dry and often sleep on it wet. I get it cut and colored every 4-6 months even though I should do it a lot more often than that, but thankfully I am team RATE! (At the moment I have like 2 inches of roots and my red dye has faded into something like cognac...)

As for me, I'm afraid I have a signature look and, for example, my doctor has told me to NEVER CHANGE IT. It does suit me and what I'm about, but I'm just dying for long hair right now. I don't want *me* hair. In fact, I'm considering going out and buying some fake hair, because I'm in the mood for heidi braids.

I really don't think it is possible to have a type of "style" without including your hair in the whole package! With my own hair - I get bored easily and am always open to trying something new. Right now my hair feels good to me, like it matches my summer casual look - but I know, come fall I will want a little more of an edgy look to it because my clothes in the fall and winter are much more abstract, artsy, modern looking than the shorts and sun dresses that I wear in the summer!

Angie, when you are discussing hair with clients, do you make recommendations or do you just have them analyze whether their hair is working for them and let them work it out with a hair dresser? I think hair is incredibly important to overall style and projecting a certain look - it's just hard to know exactly how that translates into a hair style.

So many of you have hairstyles that are cohesive with your look, which I think is great. That's my goal. It's an interesting process, though, since I'm early in my style journey. What I thought was the look I'm going for 3 months ago now doesn't seem quite right. I'm anxious to get back in to the hair dresser for some tweaking!

I think my long waves suit my style - easygoing casual, slightly flirty. It goes as well with a romantic ruffle as with rocker zippers and grommets (both of which play together in my closet)

I always had long hair of varying lengths until about a year ago, when I had it cut to shoulder then chin length. I'm pretty happy with it now; I told my stylist at my last appointment that I aspired to a French, slightly messy chic style for my hair, and I think that's what I'm working towards with it. Whether that reflects my overall style I don't know; that's taking me longer to figure out! One thing I am still getting used to is the need for more frequent trims required for maintenance.

Yes, hair is a very important fashion accessory. I couldn't agree more with Angie and Chewy. In fact I don't think it's possible to be stylish if you have an unstylish haircut -- no amount of good dress sense can make up for an 80s mullet!

Having said that, there are many, many good hairstyles out there that work for a variety of different hair types, so I'm not saying that you have to have one certain hair type to have 'good' hair. I'm not sure if my own hair 'expresses my style' in the way that Angie's does, because I change it up quite a bit. I prefer clean lines in my clothes, but I do like a messy, tangly shag haircut, which is what I've got at the moment. Bring on the hairspray! But other times I'll wear a smooth chin-length bob, which probably suits my face (and my clothes) more. A pixie would probably suit my style just as well, although I haven't done one for quite a few years -- mainly because in some ways, for me, it's more work than longer hair. I have thick hair that doesn't want to lie flat!

There are two hairstyles that define my style best: pixie, and very short bob. Simple, bold, clean, modern, polished and no-nonsense. THAT is my style.

In many ways, my hair and specs *are" my style. I agree 100% with Khris.

I can wear classic clothes and still look relatively edgy because of my very fashion forward pixie and specs.

With ALL my clients, we discuss their hair before we get into the clothes. Often they have their hair done before we start working together properly.

I don't now whether I helped?
