Great question, and beautiful photo.
I love to see how people dress in different countries and cultures.
I will get inspiration from what I see and will buy items that I like but am very aware that certain styles (or outfits) won't translate well when I get back home.
I like to pack my suitcases according to the destination, not only weather wise but also according to what will feel good to wear there (as far as I can guess).

Roberta, the elements you have summed up so well--cool colours, natural fibers, texture and streamlined design--definitely are important elements to me! :-)

I very much agree with your last paragraph, too. Am actually packing for a vacation in Denmark and just managed to find room for some extra items in my suitcase. I am a sucker for variation. Besides, I have to be prepared for several different activities and changing weather conditions and temperatures. Carry-ons have very little appeal to me unless I'll be away for just a weekend.

The Cat is right, I was profiling Scandi fashion, but I did feel similarities in all the cities we visited. Cooler colors, lots of natural fibers and texture, streamlined design. It was all so appealing to my eye!

The one thing I hate about traveling is being restricted to a minimal wardrobe, no matter how well chosen. I love my big closet and miss it when I am in a hotel. I will never be a minimalist.

I visit Japan quite often for holidays and always buy something special from my trip. I really enjoy Japanese style and most items are complete workhorses and often whilst not on first look, appear typically Japanese, there are elements of Japanese style. I usually aim to purchase items designed and made in Japan and the quality of craftsmanship is excellent.

Terrific photo!

I love to travel, and I enjoy seeing what people wear in other places, but it's not my primary or even secondary focus when I'm away. I always bring home some small bit of style from my trips, but it's usually in the form of scarves or jewelry, as they are easiest to pack, resist size changes, and serve as a great conversation starter, since I like to wear statement pieces in accessories.

I don't find myself wanting to change my style of dressing when I come home. In fact, when some girlfriends and I were in Puerto Vallarta a few months ago, we talked about how items bought on vacation often don't seem to translate to our real lives back at home. The perfect little dress for the beach vacation in Mexico looks costumey back at home, for instance. I was smitten with the amazing patterned fabrics in Zambia and South Africa, but I knew that wearing them at home would feel out of place for me, so I left them behind (but took photos!). I did, however, buy jewelry there.

I would love to travel to Japan and other places in Asia, but I know I will feel completely out of step fashion-wise there. It seems to be the realm of the petite, and the style very different from what I wear. Even if I stick out like a huge sore thumb, I still want to go! :-)

That’s a great picture!

I have a slightly different take on the question. I’m not that influenced by what other people are wearing but I can be very influenced by the art and architecture that I see on my travels. Last year I went to NYC and I felt moved by many things I saw at the Met eg Byzantine jewellery, Tiffany mosaics. It made me want to adopt a more old world inspired style and more jewel colours.

I love travelling but don’t think I model myself on the clothing from other countries particularly. I feel we get a lot of influence from other countries here anyway since we are nearly all well travelled. I love buying the occasional item while away though, it’s fun to think of the “ Bali dress” or the “Cairns red dress” or the Grand Canyon earrings

Gorgeous photo and great question! Yes, I am very influenced. I went to Paris to meet my former boss about 20 years ago and stayed with her in her borrowed Parisian apartment and hung out with her Parisian friends and I spent the whole time with my eyes popped with how elegant and gorgeous everyone looked. I have been in Paris a few times since and it remains a huge influence on my style or at least my judgment. I have been to London and different parts of Italy (my travel is pretty much confined to what works on the way to New York) and I love soaking up the different vibes. Then there is New York City itself (Manhattan and Brooklyn). I love people watching everywhere I go.

Italy taught my to keep it tailored, polished and classic (I threw out my jeggings after that trip!) London had me abandon athleisure and go back to my former dressier style. India inspired me with its crisp and bright cotton salwar khameezes. I am always inspired when I travel!

Though I people watch and get some style inspiration from travelling, it is living out of a suitcase and working with a tight capsule of mix and match items that has the biggest impact. I also have a tendency to fall in love hard with things that work particularly well on trips. I have a black pair of pants I now call my 'travelling pants' because they worked so well on a trip to NL. I have a hard time giving up clothes with positive travel vibes.

DH's style was profoundly impacted by our trip to NL. Since that trip he has sized down in all his tops and only added slim leg pants (some from Germany!) to his closet. He looks much trimmer in clothes that fit, rather than the oversize clothes he used to wear. He saw how much neater European men looked compared to how sloppy he (and other North American tourists) appeared in their oversize shirts and jeans.

DS #1 was impacted by his trip to London +\-5 years ago. He still uses two blazer jackets - one check (wool, winter weight) and one plaid (summer weight) - as outerwear over chinos or jeans when going out and about. It was something he saw a lot when he was over there, and he prefers the look to a bomber or other casual topper.

I dream of traveling to Scandinavian countries. I love Scandi design in everything, from interior to fashion. No wonder my favorite store is COS. I’m afraid if I go, I would never leave! :)
The country that influenced me the most was France. I was observing and absorbing the casual but very put together style. Before I had my “office” wardrobe and my weekend clothes. I used to spend more on my work clothes. The weekend stuff was lacking sophistication and polish, was too casual for a stroll or a museum visit. And my office clothes was too somber and serious for a casual outing. It was years ago but I remember seeing a middle aged woman wearing a simple white linen shirt untucked with sand color chinos and light beige comfortable sandals. She had a short hair, minimal make up, small gold accessories and man-style watch. It was so simple, and fresh. The quality of her pieces, this is why the whole look worked so wonderfully. I since pay more attention to my casual wardrobe and ready to spend a bit more on it.

I love travelling. We have travelled by car mostly because we take our dogs with us. We did go to England a few times about 10 years ago and I went to Spain for professional reasons 12 years ago. Mr SF#1 travelled constantly for his work (photography) and saw a lot of the world. I went with him on some of his trips. Years ago I went to Europe and Mr SF #2 travelled around Europe and Morocco (his favourite).

I am definitely influenced by the travelling. My style is most influenced by Montreal women. It is no secret to anyone who knows me that I adore Montreal. I imagine the style is similar to French women. As Angie said, the people wear their 'good' clothes even to walk their dogs. The women are very stylish and well groomed. Lots of scarves. I was long overdue for a haircut and got a lob (long bob). I saw quite a few women with these and liked them.

I've been to Sweden and loved it. Travelling is the best, and I adore COS. Scandi interior design is my BEST - complimented with lots of Asian.

My style is only ever influenced by my travels. Here's how:

Hong Kong - I'm influenced by the POLISH, poise, crispness, dressy ease and fearless fashion. My favourite and most stylish city.

Japan - I'm influenced by the grace and elegance.

The Netherlands - I'm influenced by the way people put bike-friendly and commuting on foot friendly casual outfits together in interesting and colorful ways. They are kind to their feet and look fabulous. I'm inspired by healthy and well taken care of Nordic skin too.

France - I'm inspired by how the older men and women dress, and how designer pieces are worn with EVERYTHING and for a very long time. Lots of well loved and quite battered Chanel, LV and Hermes bags on the street all the time.

Italy - It's local eye candy everywhere. I'm influenced by high quality items and how they go the distance and stand the test of time. They go out to fancy dinner, AND to the beach - it's all good.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your days in Scandinavia. Love your
picturesque view from your hotel room. This picture brings back fond memories, as I actually lived at one of those city lakes in Copenhagen when I was a little girl. May I ask you the name of your hotel? To me, the houses in front look as they could be part of the streets called "Kartoffelrækkerne" ("The Potato Rows") at the Sortedam Lake. In the 1960s, some of my dear friends lived in one of those houses.

I still live in Scandinavia, and it is always fun to hear others describe "Scandinavian style." Personally, I see multiple styles within Scandinavia, but I agree that simplicity and comfort seem to appeal to many people here. However, even in Scandinavia, some maximalists can be found, and I know many Scandinavians who wear florals and animal prints. :-)

I love people watching everywhere I go, and on my travels I often get some new ideas for styling etc. However, those ideas are usually based on inspiration from just one or a few individuals, not from large groups of people. Instead of traditional souvenirs, I prefer to buy accessories, footwear or clothing items from places I have visited--but they have to suit my general style and not be "tourist tees" etc.

This is long ago now, but I spent 2 months in Nepal during my final year of med school. The thin air and bright sunlight at that high altitude made anything but the most saturated of colours seem washed out. And people dressed in rich colours and vivid patterns.

So when I got home I had a very different relationship with colour, and took a while to get back to "normal". The only outfit I recall now was a grey and burgundy check shirtdress worn with tights so bright red that were practically glow-in-the-dark. It felt perfectly natural to me but I sure got some side-eye.

Part two:

During my time in Kathmandu, and years later in Nairobi, Kenya, it felt perfectly natural to wear sneakers with a dress or skirt, and I did it all the time. Only weeks later, back in Toronto and later in Johannesburg, I not only could not bring myself to do it, but found it hard to believe that I ever had done it.

(How the world has changed; now I do it as a matter of course. But of course now it is chic to do so. I hope I never quit either.)

Sounds like you had a great trip. Would love to see your souvenirs.

I do think travel influences, but it’s more a case of changing what I wear in that location (eg planning for metro rides, or more time walking in the cold vs driving). I do like having some wearable momentos of my trips, but as I’m usually a carry-on girl, I look for smaller items like jewelry or scarves.

Lovely photo! And interesting topic.

I travel quite a lot and it certainly influences my style while I am away, but I'm not so sure it has had lasting impact because I'm so much a "weather" dresser, i.e. I have to be practical and prepared for the conditions I'm in.

Pretty photo! I've never had $ to travel outside the US, but definitely pick up things when travelling in the country. My main travel has been to CA, and my style has always been influenced by it.

Gorgeous photo - I'm so envious of your trip! When I travel, I tend to compromise a lot on style because I'm typically carry-on only. But I love to people watch and window shop in each destination. Each area does have it's regional style. I love to find an item to bring home that evokes memories of the trip. I bought the shirts below in Uniqlo Tokyo and Universe on a Tee in the Jordaan, Amsterdam and they always make me smile when I wear them.

I can't wait to see your souvenirs in action!

Oooh, the idea of creating a travel capsule related to style influences is a great one! I can see how South Beach would be wildly different from Copenhagen - and not just because of the weather.

Yes, absolutely! We love to travel and people watching is a big plus for me. Scandinavian minimalism, British variety and eccentricity, Parisian subdued elegance - they all influence me. Sometimes I put on an outfit and think this would look great in Paris. Unfortunately I’m just heading to the supermarket in my small suburban city lol. Travel has definitely affected how I shop though. I look at clothes and shoes (especially shoes), and ask myself would they be good for travel. By doing this I’ve accidentally put together a capsule wardrobe, which makes travel even easier. Win-win, right?

Oh yes, very interesting topic! One of my best friends is Danish, and her style has tremendously influenced mine. Actually, I've never been to Denmark, but I feel like I understand their style sense rather well because of her. Denmark is a very stylish country, and I find myself embracing their designs more and more, not just in clothes but also in things for the home. They just speak to me!

I just got back from Greece, but didn't get a particular style flavor there. It was a little of everything, very international, everything from athleisure to Euro-chic. There were some gorgeous resort clothes on the islands that I enjoyed looking at, but didn't have room in my luggage to add anything, alas.

Interesting topic! I don't know if it changed my style per se, but after my first trip to Paris, I started wearing a few things differently. I specifically remember wearing business casual pants with a heather grey (read: sporty) t. It was 2008, so it wasn't seen in Denver yet. Beautiful photo!

I just returned from ten days in Scandinavia (I know, I am one lucky gal), and of course I eyeballed every woman I saw there for style tips. Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Talinn - all remarkably stylish cities. I bought two tops and a scarf, nothing radical, from two boutiques and the scarf from COS. Oh - and a luxurious and warm leather jacket in Helsinki (it got quite cold that day). Below is the twilight view from one of our Copenhagen hotel windows.

I observed subtle colors, abstract prints (no florals or animal print), interesting textures (on everyone from babies to the elderly), striking but practical footwear. It was mostly very warm when we were there, so I didn't see all the knitwear you normally would. Except for infants in hand-knitted onesies with wee pointed hoods (so much awwww). ETA - everywhere I went I thought my pants were too loose/big. Everyone bikes everywhere so they are showing off their legs. Lots of short skirts with black tights.

But I felt a strong desire to dress a little differently when I came home. The words in my head were: simple, modern, comfortable. My eye was editing prospective outfits differently. I'm interested to note that it hasn't inspired SHOPPING. That too seems to be a Scandinavian minimalist influence.

Have you found your fashion sense influenced or changed by your journeys?
