i all about the secret detail. so a peek of patterned sock only when you sit or when the pant leg flaps really get me excited! almost like a geisha's shoulder.

Suz, thank you so much. I definitely live in an environment where we do snow boots, winter shoes outside and it is not uncommon to bring along shoes to wear once I get to my destination. Because, in my house, shoes go off when we come in, it didn't occur to me that I wear shoes all the time in friends' houses, etc. Thank you for pointing this out for me...and for the shoe love :)

The Pear Shape, thank you for your suggestions, I tend to be more monochromatic but appreciate the idea to take advantage of the color of the shoes and the warmth of the tights to add some fun to my outfit... I think I'll have a look in my sock drawer and see what I can come up with. :)

bj1111, thank you for taking the time to go into such detail and for giving me such great options (spelled out clearly, I definitely had a block so your examples were really helpful). You made me smile too, I'm 42, not sure if that puts me on the young side :)
And I have been so busy wearing my slouchy boyfriends and snug skinnies that I didn't even consider my lonely bootcuts which are definitely hemmed to hide the back of my foot, and I love the idea of a hidden pop of color in that way!

I'm so appreciative of all your good ideas, thank you all!

i can see both skirts and pants. the question is will the bottoms cover the shoe. so with wide leg or boot cut or long slouchies, wear patterned socks! otherwise stick with tights...go wild with pattern or color or thickness as your outfit and style demand. if you are on the young side, try tights AND knee or thigh high socks. super fun!

Gorgeous Gorgeous shoes! I actually love the look of contrasting tights with fun colored shoes like these. I often wear tights under jeans in the really cold weather. I am envisioning slouchy boyfriend jeans rolled up with bright fuschia tights with these shoes. Glamorous and gorgeous

Gorgeous shoes. But yes, I see the problem.

I think what I'd do in my somewhat extreme winter climate is this: I would save them for "indoor shoes" in winter. So, I'd wear my boots TO wherever I was going. This would allow me to wear sheer, not-terribly -warm tights underneath...and then I would put the shoes on. The tights might be nude, or could be sheer in another colour (whatever worked with the outfit). And these would be my party shoes.

It's a bit of a pain to have to carry them around if you are going somewhere, but on the other hand, where I live, it's the only way I'd get wear from them. And nude hose would solve the problem of looks.

Thanks bj1111
Of course! I was thinking I might have to wear tights, but wasn't sure if that was a no-no with the open back (like I, personally, don't like the look of tights with peep-toe shoes, but don't mind them with high-vamp shoes that have cut-outs)...

Do you think the tights make it more of a skirt look or would they still work with tights and some slouchy pants? I'm trying to picture my black slouchy Theory pants and am having trouble without the ankle showing?

i love these! the open back to me is easily solvable by wearing tights. either to match for a seamless look or a contrasting color to enhance the rich purple. suede is a bigger issue in salty snowy streets. have the suede treated...should help.

I have a pair of See by Chloe booties in deep purple that I adore. Love these shoes.
BUT I may have not completely considered the implications of buying deep purple suede with an open back and how that may limit my opportunities to wear them.

couture.zappos.com/see-by-chloe-sb19035-93-dark-purple

In the late summer/early fall, I wore them with rolled boyfriend jeans...now that I can't really do bare ankles, I'm kind of stuck. I'd love any inspiration you have to offer, I hate the thought of these languishing in my closet forever! Thanks so much.
