i think it depends on the shape of the pant....with a high-waisted skinny i would want something different than i high-waisted flare or culotte. with a skinny, i'd like something that balances out the bottom, so i'd probably still wear a longer top, or a tunic, but with a flare or culotte, probably a shorter top, or depending on the fit, i'd try tucking

Like Anna I prefer higher rise jeans with cropped boxy or flowy tops or tucked tops if the rise is going to show. Semi-tucking can be much more awkward. With tunic or long untucked lengths the rise doesn't show so to me it doesn't really matter what you are wearing underneath in terms of rise, just the proportions of the pants width and length matter.

I agree with smittie that a tucked-in top with high-waisted pants tend to make your bottom look long and flat, especially if the pants are snug. This seems to be less of a problem with high-waisted but loose trousers. The look I like best with high-waisted pants is a cropped, drapey top with some volume. A crop top that is slightly longer in the back does work well. You can wear high-waisted pants with a tucked-in top, too, but I think it's trickier (but not impossible) to look chic that way.

Having said all that, I don't wear them myself. The high rise is supposed to make your legs look long, but on my petite frame, it makes my waist look incredibly short, which is so unflattering that it's not worth the leg-lengthening effect. It doesn't help that my husband thinks they're hideous on everybody (I think he's wrong, they do look good on some people, but not on me!). I think they work better on average-sized and tall women, and women with a more pronounced waist.

I really prefer high waisted jeans now. I either do a cropped top, I like them on the wide side. Or tucked in.

I hadn't thought about a high-low shirt, smittie. I will be on the lookout for something like that to try on.

bettycrocker I too really like the way high waisted pants feel - no hiking up during the day, etc.

Maybe my confusion has also to do with the combination of high waisted and leg widths.

I'm short-waisted but have a long rise, so high-waisted pants feel good on me. However, I don't like the way they look if I tuck in my top, so I never tuck. What does everybody else do?

I like to have a bit of coverage in the back. But that's because I don't like the long look at the back when shirts are tucked in.
At the front, I think the shirt should be tucked or cropped.
So essentially, a high-low hem.

Or, you can leave a shirt untucked completely, and wear the high waisted jeans for their comfort factor. (I find them very comfortable.)

I don't know much about the length of a topper.

Can we talk a little about high waisted pants? I am trying to decide if there are any "rules" about the length of top (and toppers) to wear with these type of pants. I'm thinking either long or short for the topper but not in the middle?
