Use your wash machine and soak for half hour or so. Then run the regular wash cycle. During the soaking make sure the whole jean is fully in the water.
I would use a lot of bleach - like up to a quart.

Supposedly lemon juice works too but not sure how much you would need.

IK mix bleach and salt in the bathtub, then soak these in? Or run it all through the washing cycle in the machine at the same time?

Ornella , not sure about German detergents but couple of heavy washes of detergents for white clothes have definitely lightened the shade of my clothes. May be it would work for the jeans too

Thanks for the input.

Betti :: I'll have a look at the type of products you mention to see if something similar can be found here and be what I'm after. I'm not in the US.

I think Rit or another at-home dye company has a product that washes out jeans. Take a look at JoAnn Fabrics or Michaels Crafts, they may have something like that.

Hmmm, I'm not really sure; my initial thought was to just try sun-bleaching them, but I don't if it will get you as light as you want. Might give more of the faded look though. Good luck, in any case!

Mr.O has a pair of 501 which he doesn't wear as they are a shade of denim which looks quite dated (on the left) and I want to try and wash them out, not necessarily as the shade of blue he does wear (on the right), but somewhere in between - or when he thinks it's just right :-D

How do I do that?

ETA: Specific US products may not be available to me, so I'm having high hopes from home-DIY solutions.
