Great Dani. (I hope today’s blog post inspires you).

Quite right! In America, you cross fingers, and in other parts of the world you hold or press thumbs.

We also say "holding thumbs" in my country too Maybe it's a general European thing.

Thanks Dani. I hope you won't need to purchase more shirts again either!

You need shirt length to achieve most of these looks with pants/jeans. Can you take a pic and show us the length? I hope they’re not too short (holding thumbs).

Thanks again for all the ideas, everyone! I started going through all my clothes to see what I had that might work. I didn't find much, but I'll keep looking. There are too many great suggestions for me not to be able to find anything :)

Angie, the shirts hit about mid hip. I should have mentioned in the original post that they are all sorts of colors...blue, pink, coral, orangey-red, lavendar striped, etc. I don't think I'll ever need to buy another button down shirt again, LOL!

Shell nailed all the suggestions I would have and that I use all the time. The only other one I would add that I haven't yet tried myself: use a men's tie with it and then match it up with something ultra feminine - like a skirt and heels.

I also have several long sleeved and 3/4 sleeve fitted shirts, so am enjoying all the ideas. Marianne, I tried one with a short sleeved cardi very much like the one in your link...same shape...and thought it looked fine.

Another idea I think I'll try is using long narrow scarves with the blouses to give them a tie blouse look. I've found plain white and plain white scarves like this at Target that I plan to tie in a loose square knot low at the V of the shirt. I tried it in black and really liked a black lace narrow scarf with black shirt and my A-line denim skirt with a belt with lots of brass hardwear and black gladiator type chuinky heeled sandals. For me it's a bit of an edgy look.

Marianne. I am not sure if those type of sweaters would work over button-downs, but you could give them a try. But they do work over simple fitted knit tops and turtlenecks, so that the sleeves and bottom of the top are visible .

Dani, I meant a sweater like this one:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....5&P=3

I have a similar one that's boxed up right now. But after further thinking it doesn't look like the silhouette would work. Sorry about this! I also struggle with the same issue, so it's great to have all these ideas.

Thanks for the great compliment Dani ! *blushing*

The sweater is old, but every year J crew has something similar - an argyle short sleeve cashmere. So far they only have a cardigan and a vest, but maybe they'll have a SS sweater later. Here's the vest:
http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Brows...../96130.jsp

I'll let you know if I see something similar somewhere else. And you probably already have a white shirt and dark jeans in your closet.

Edit: Here's one at J Crew for sale:
http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Navig...../90723.jsp

I don't know if you like any of the available colors though.

Edit #2: A cotton faux-wrap one at Chadwicks:
http://www.chadwicks.com/cloth.....d=j9249594

A really excellent question Dani. I am late to chime in here, everybody has made great suggestions. I second all of them, particularly vests/knit vests/short-sleeve sweaters. Here are some of these in practice for ideas, some from my old looks and some from NY&Co website:

1. SS argyle cashmere sweater over white shirt
http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN2907.jpg

2. Knit faux-wrap vest over shirt:
http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN3022.jpg

3. Menswear vest over shirt
http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN3012.jpg

Ny&Co:

1. Cardigan, belt &necklace
http://www.nyandcompany.com/ny.....d=cat60038

2. Argyle sweater vest
http://www.nyandcompany.com/ny.....d=cat60038

3. Long cardigan
http://www.nyandcompany.com/ny.....d=cat60038

Thank you Dani for asking the question and for interesting suggestions. I tend to like button-downs better than blouses, mostly because it's hard for me to find a blouse with a flattering neckline. I do wear mine in mostly business casual way and I've been wondering about wearing them with jeans.

Do you guys think button downs would work with a trapeze sweater sort of like the one San bought at NAS, but with a lower crew neck?

If you have slender arms....try a short sleeved sweater over the button down shirt. I think that's quite funky and out of the box.

If the shirt is long enough, you could try it with skinnies or leggings tucked into riding boots or straight leg jeans and some big fat chunky bright beads around your neck.

How about using them as a semi jacket in summer? Like over a sleeveless tight fitting top? It depends on how well the shirt fits, because it could look baggy or sloppy. Button a button or two lower down so it gives you some shape, or belt it...the top under could be striped or a small print too. If they are 3/4 length sleeves, you could add some cuffs or bracelets, depending on what works for your body type. That's what came to mind.

here are a few ideas i came up with:

-structured vest - probably my favorite choice. it's fashionable without looking too trendy, so it'll fit your classic style. if you want to update it even more, try adding a brooch on the vest or even a belt around the midsection of the vest.

-sweater vest - similar to the structured vest, but it has a preppier feel to it. would be nice during the autumn/winter. not sure how preppy you care to be, so this look might not be for you. i could definitely see you pull it off though.

-high-waisted belt - think ana with her fabulous chef blouse. although the standard button-ups lack the architectural details of her blouse, you can still pull off the basic look. it would look great over dark denim.

-bold-colored cami underneath - try it with just the top few buttons open. adding layers of pearls, beads, or chain jewelry would look fabulous with this. also, a bold color for the cami would add a great burst of color

-cardigan or blazer - maybe more of an obvious choice, but blouse always do look great under these. since the button-ups lack any fun details, accessorizing with brooches, necklaces, belts, etc. will again add some more visual interest to the look.

-scarf - a long thin scarf, worn with both ends in the front (not sure exactly how else to describe this style) would look nice. you could also try lariat style, but that might be too bulky over the collar.

Try layering sleeveless tops over them. V-necks or deep scoop necks are best, and a heavier fabric will generally work better than a very light one. I do this a lot and it totally peps up plain shirts (especially if the top layer is multi-colored or a structured fabric).

Oh, GREAT question Dani! I have been wondering the same thing! My button-up shirts are the orphans in my closet. I've tried wearing different jackets with them, but they still seem so plain to me. I don't own any vests, but I've thrown a deep-v-neck sweater over them. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else has to say!

Can you wear the look the model is wearing? Also a vest sounds really good with a shirt like this. I like the way the shirt is fitted through the waist, not a lot of extra fabric. It would be good under jackets too ofcourse. I think if the color is good it is a good style.

I was looking through my closet last night and making a list of gaps I'd like to fill this fall when I noticed I have a few 3/4 length sleeve button up shirts similar in cut to this:
http://www.bananarepublic.com/.....=587844032
but with 3/4 sleeves.

Is there a way to update this look and add an edge? I'm wondering if I can get any use out of them this fall? I've considered adding a waistcoat/vest. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
