I think if a shirt is fitted it is easier to tuck in without a bulk and it stays tucked better.

As a petite gal, I totally understand where you are coming from, shiny. I think part of the problem is that a lot of tops are too long on me. I think I will only tuck into flowy skirts so the bulk won't be noticeable. Maybe tucking in just isn't for me.

You're reminding me why I got out of the tucking habit. As a petite back in the 80s, it used to be that petite tops were few and far between. They'd be so long on me, I'd have to tuck, but then I'd get all kinds of bunching. I confess I resorted to hacking tops with a pair of scissors. I didn't even bother to hem them since they'd be tucked and nobody was the wiser.

Of course, I'm not suggesting you do this. :-)

As I experiment again with tucking, I'm finding it works best with 1) skirt length tops (that hit at high hip, so there's less to tuck) and 2) lightweight fabrics like silk -- silk tucks beautifully.

I really want to tuck my denim shirt into skirts but it has jeans buttons on it, and they are creating odd lumps.

I used to work with a slender woman who had a very polished style. If she knew she wanted to tuck shirts into a pair of slacks, she would buy them a size up to give more room and keep a clean line. If she really loved the slacks she'd buy a pair in her normal size, then a size up to tuck with.

I'm not saying this is the universal answer. But it was enlightening to see one her methods to look so polished.

I think some people tuck inside their tights (if they are wearing them).

I dont do that, but I do resort to the washroom to tug the tops down a couple of times a day, because they have a way of working themselves out.

Some kinds of garments just aren't made to be tucked into; if the fabric of a bottom is too thin and insubstantial and the fabric of the top is bulky or ungiving, then there will definitely be bulk. So I just don't tuck into those skirts/bottoms.

Your probably may be slightly different - it might be that you have too much fabric or your tops are just too long. That's another issue but also happens sometimes.

It seems every time I try to tuck in shirts to a fitted bottom it creates bulk in tummy/ lower back that I do not have! How do you perfectly tuck something in.
