IMO, the jackets that are shorter in the back and longer in the front go particularly well with the tops that are longer in the back and shorter in the front. Many tops like that look like they were made for jackets like you describe.

Otherwise, they go well with dresses, too.

I do the same as Caro. I love the short-over-long silouette.

I rarely tuck so I usually wear mine with the tail sticking out or wear the banded hem/more fitted knit so you can hitch it up a bit. I think it helps to have a low contrast top--at least for me. Here's mine--part of a capsule I'm sort of playing around with.

caro -- I actually like the look, I do it with cropped jackets :)

Deborah -- semi tuck sounds good. I think what is confusing my eye is how much tail is sticking out. I guess to me, if only a few inches sticks out, it looks like a mistake, but if a significant portion sticks out, it looks like it's on purpose. Hm.

jurocha -- I like the idea of a banded hem, that would work!

I don't hv the jackets you mentioned, but I still own an old faux leather from three years ago whose back is slightly shorter than the front. I either tuck the top or wear sweaters with banded hem.

I guess the "sticking out tail" is a preference thing. It is a look, I can even find it cool and rock'n'roll on others (usually taller gals), but I too feel it sloopy on me.

Same as Caro, I like the layering of different lengths. Occasionally I semi tuck and leave the back of my top hanging lower:)

I leave mine out because I love a shorter jacket over a longer top but I know some people just don't like the look

I've been admiring the cutaway styles sported by many YLFers, such as the Theory Lanai and the Halogen cutaway leather jacket. The Halogen jacket in particular seems to be shorter in the back than in the front.

I'm wondering, with these types of jackets, do you tend to tuck your tops so that the tail of the top doesn't extend past the back of the jacket? I've seen some styling on Nordstrom that shows the tail sticking out, but that looks a bit sloppy to me. Or maybe there's a way to make it look intentional, or its just a "look"?

FYI, I'm asking because I'm considering a cutaway jacket and trying to figure out how to best style it :)

Thanks for your help!
