To prevent a skinny jean or any fitted jean from sliding down is to buy a better quality jean. Some manufactures think that creating a jean pant without shape, in otherwords, straight from its waistband, flat in the back and sides is an adequate garment, but it is not. Whether we have shapes like rounded hips, thighs, buttocks or not, does not matter; the garment must have shape in order to fit properly. If you have room in the waistband, try putting two darts in back of the pant from the top of the waistband down about 2-3 inches on both sides (above where pockets would go). Careful not to sew darts too long to interfere with back seams or pockets. You may even have to remove the name brand tag on the waistband to do this. If you have to pay a seamstress to do this, you might as well spend the extra when buying the jean.

This may be a 4 year old post but here it is again in 2016. My problem is support across the back. The solution that works for me is jeans that have more than one belt loop across the back. Except for a few "pricier" jeans, the major manufacturers will not do this.

I think this is primarily an issue with modern stretchy pants. I have a defined waist and pronounced hips and it's still an issue for me. I do much better with vintage styles, where the waist is distinctly smaller than the hips -- 501s stay put on me, as do old 100% cotton straight leg and bootcuts. As pants have gotten stretchier I think manufacturers do a lot less shaping/tailoring which means pants are more likely to migrate... I have a feeling this is part of why higher-waisted skinnies have started to become popular; they still slide down, but just to a point that's more comfortable, not into plumbers-crack territory.

Eliabeth, same here. I'm in okay shape, but slidey jeans seem to act like a push-up bra for muffin-top! And let me tell you, I don't need extra cleavage ANYWHERE.

alaskagirl: your post made me laugh. No kidding about the "extra muffin top" when the jeans slide down! I get that too. The annoying thing is, I'm not overweight. I mean, my midriff isn't exactly perfect after two kids, but it's not bad, and when my jeans slide down and sort push up the extra flesh, it looks three times as bad as it really is! Maya -- I do have three pairs of mid-rise jeans, and the slide-down (and resulting muffin top) is less dramatic with them, for sure. But it still happens.

Next time I buy jeans, I will pay attention to stretch fibre content. Deb, thanks for the suggestion about the suspenders, but I don't think I'm going to go there! I may try and invisibelt, however...thanks for the suggestion, Isabel. I had never heard of it.

I'm not sure there is a way to make your current jeans work without a belt.

I also suspect you need a higher rise so the waistband is more anchored and secure...but again, that would require buying new jeans.

Another one with the same problem. My BR skinny jeans slide, but the Kut From the Kloth stay put very nicely, as do the COH Elstons. David Kahn's also work well for me, although I think they have a higher rise.

I have a fairly classic hourglass shape -- 36" - 26" -36.5" and most of my jeans slide down. I think Anna's right it has to do with the spandex content. My 1% spandex jeans stay up better than my 2%. Most of my True Religion have lower spandex content; my 7FAM are 2% so I wear belts with all of them. It doesn't seem to matter what the leg cut is.

I'm serious. I had a pair of pants once that never "sat" right, and would slide. I clipped on suspenders and brought them to the perfect height/length, then continued dressing per usual.

I'm pretty much a rectangle with no butt, and I have found that the falling-down-phenomenon is much worse with my Levi's than my Gap Real-Straights or my Kut from the Kloth jeans from last year's NAS, so I think there's a difference related to quality of jeans. In fact, I'm always amazed by how the KK jeans stay put. (BTW, I can't actually wear "skinnies", only "straights" because of years of playing soccer, doing modern dance, running, nordic skiing, etc., that have built up my calves - I'm not sure if that makes a difference at all).

Add me to the "no hips/slide-down" list. I have seriously been contemplating the Invisibelt because I don't like the belt lumpiness especially with a cami under a cropped top. I always just assumed it was because of my midriff flab. And to add insult to injury, when my pants slide down I get extra muffin top, instead of the girdling effect I aim to achieve. BLAH.

I find that my skinny jeans slide down more. I have two pairs of the same style of jeans (Sweetheart) from Old Navy, and the bootcut ones fit like a dream--so do the skinnies, but they slide down every time I bend or sit or even bend my knees!

I think the tight calves (not thighs) cause the problem: they stay put, and essentially hold or pull the pants down from the ankle area.

Haven't figured out how to fix this problem. I tend to wear the skinnies for "show," but the bootcuts for real comfort!

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. Maya -- I'm not sure if they make men's jeans small enough, but it's worth a try. The problem is, I don't want to have to go out and buy bunch of new jeans! I like my jeans. I just wish they'd stay put without a belt. Annagybe -- I've never thought about the spandex content. Next time I need to buy jeans, I'll keep that in mind....however it seems like all jeans, except Levi's 501's, have some kind of stretch fibre in them these days. Mo -- it's true, I've noticed the thigh-hugging ones seem a little more likely to slide down. The trouble is, I love how they make my legs look. I guess I can't have it all.

I find this happens to cuts that are snug around the thighs in particular. Maybe search for some not as tight in the thigh/hip area?

Hmm, hopefully you won't cringe at the suggestion, but have you considered trying mens' jeans? I am just thinking--since men are straighter through the hips, they might actually fit you better. I guess it depends what size you wear though, since you won't find anything under a 28.

Yes, any tighter and I couldn't get them zipped up! :-)
As I mentioned, if they are a little loose in the waist/bum, I get them altered to fit perfectly.
