I wear a very loose slouchy knit cap in a lightweight yarn--cashmere or baby alpaca are best. The two I have both look a bit like a beret. They are loose enough not to compress my hair around the band and light enough not to smash it down. It works fairly well, but I've found that almost everything musses my hair some because it is very fine and inclined to be flat.

Hi, NDMom. I totally understand your dilemma because I also walk to work in the winter. My solution has been a snood/infinity scarf thing that looks like a scarf, but can be pulled up over my ears or over my head depending on how much warmth I need. If you google "hood scarf" or "snood scarf", you can see lots of different types. Angie even did a post about them about five or six years ago: http://youlookfab.com/2009/08/.....or-sports/

Keeps me warm and cosy without suffering from hat head for the rest of the day.

Forgot to add that the back band sits on your neck, not your head.

I love my wrap-around-ear warmers from Target (but you can get them other places, too). I am too vain to wear a hat and wreck my hair, but I do walk outside every day and need my ears to be warm. Add a scarf that I can pull up around my mouth/chin and I am happy.

Here's some, for example:

Hello Ladies!

I work at a university, but because it is part-time, I have to walk about a mile to my office.

This wouldn't be so bad, except that I live in North Dakota (waving to my SK, Canada friends).

Do you have any suggestions or ideas for something to wear on my head/neck that will not totally dishevel my hair. I have very short hair and regular hats/cap cause terrible hat head.

Is there something out there that you could recommend to keep my head/face warm and hair half-ways presentable by the time I arrive?

TIA...... Paula

ETA: I have two nice, warm coats without hoods.....so I don't want to have to buy a new coat.
