Katie, I've been thinking about this some more. Do you think you could wear a 'bright' blue like this VS shirt?
http://www2.victoriassecret.co.....rfnbr=3946
(It's actually even a bit more vibrant in person - I never imagined I could pull this off, but every time I wear it, I receive compliments).

It still depends a bit on the exact shade of your scarf, but I suspect the two colours could work together and the blue would be perfect to counter the 'washing you out effect' of the olive.
So if you could find a way to wear this blue close to your face (a turtleneck, a ruffle blouse with upright collar....), and then add the scarf...

I like Ana's suggestion of, subtly, hinting at another colour.

I was going to suggest using it as a throw/blanket for lounging around the house (if it's large enough for that, of course). I have a cashmere pashmina, and it is surprisingly warm (if yours is 100% silk, or a silk blend, it might still be warm enough for this in Spring and Summer).

Or - not sure if it will work, but it's worth a try - maybe you could pair it with another scarf: something with a pattern in colours that are flattering. Make sure the patterned scarf is as close to your face as possible, and then find a way to wear the olive pashmina over that, maybe in a euro loop, or a loosely tied knot? (taking care that the patterned scarf is visible at all times).

My MIL makes inventive use of some shawls/wraps by using one to cover her computer keyboard when not in use, as a runner on a table cloth, or simply draping one over the back of a chair or a lamp (which isn't on). Is there a way you can do that so your DIL sees you are putting it to use but not have it leach away color from your face?

Thanks for the sensitive, practical advice. You know how we sometimes wear things we know don't look great. You helped me remember that you just can't do that when the something is right next to the face.

This is such a tough situation! Pashminas are especially difficult because they are right up against your face, so a flattering color really is important. It sounds like you look best in cool tones, and the olive is a very warm color. I understand not wanting to give it away. Could you maybe just wear it around the house when you get cold? Lightweight pashminas can be worn as a regular scarf, or as a wrap. I have a lightweight silk/cashmere scarf and I sometimes wear mine around the house. That way you could use it, but you wouldn't have to wear it out. And if you really love the material and style (just not the color), when your son and DIL come to visit, you could wear it, and then say something like, "I get so much use out of this, I just love it! I would love find one in _____ color, too for Spring." Hopefully they will take a hint.

One of my sons and his wife wear a lot of the same colors: browns and olive greens. These colors flatter them and they dress their children similarly.

On birthdays and Christmas time they usually give my husband and I clothing in those colors, which are hugely unflattering on us. My husband wears his for work (he works outside and that doesn't matter) so it's not much of an issue for them. This year I received a beautiful pashmina/silk wrap in black and deep olive.

This is my first pashmina and I am so touched to have been given one. My DIL told me how excited she was when she saw it and that she thought of me immediately.

Unfortunately, I have gone all through my closet and find it won't go with anything I have. My coloring: blue eyes and silvery/brown hair. Medium complexion. My best colors are wine to pinks, purples, and blues. Sometimes I can do head-to-toe black, IF my makeup is just right and I choose an accent color for scarf that is flattering.

I need some tips on how I might make this work. It would look lovely on my daughter-in-law, and various friends, but I would never feel right about giving it away.
