It would help to see a pic of your hair. How long is it? Bob cuts can be of various lengths so it would help to know what length it is.
I don't see why you can't have bangs cut now. Just a word of caution - unless you're good at cutting your own hair I'd advise having a stylist do it cause a bad bang cut is hard to hide.

With frequent, very good haircuts. That's the only way I've ever been able to do it decently.

I agree with Maya and Kari's advice. I just want to add that I think getting the bangs now might help the growing out stage be more fun (or at least tolerable), so I wouldn't wait until your hair is longer for the bangs.

I most recently grew my hair out from a bob to below shoulder length late in college. I'd recommend the strategy that Maya mentioned, but due to my hair type being the way it is (abundant like yours, but very fine) I still needed to have many layers in my hair even while it was long - otherwise, my hair was just too heavy and looked like it was plastered flat to my skull.

I would just gradually have my stylist adjust the longest layers to be closer to the same length every time I went in for a cut. I noticed that even while my hair was growing out, it behaved better and annoyed me less if I went in for a trim/shaping regularly, even if I wanted to keep most of the length of my longest layers.
When my hair did irritate me (especially if I had very short, face-framing layers that I wanted to grow out), headbands and bobby pins were very helpful to pull the hair away from my face.

Ultimately, I decided that below-shoulder-length hair is not for me as it took too much maintenance and hassle to get even a semblance of volume and shape when my hair was long, and went back to a chin-length bob after a year or so. I spend about half of the time styling & wrestling with my hair now as I did when it was long, which is a great improvement. (My face does not look good when my hair is pulled back in a ponytail, so that was not a solution for me.)

Yes, hair accessories can definitely make the process a bit easier.

That's what I thought the answer might be, Maya. Sounds like I should invest in a bunch of bobby pins and barettes.

Hmm, I have had that haircut a few times in the past and it does take some patience to grow it gracefully.

I'd always let it grow until the front ends reached my shoulders. Then I would go to get it evened out and add some layers to cut down on the bulk. Depending on how much difference there is between the longest and shortest bits, this can be a little painful, but it's a necessary evil.

Are there any hair experts in the crowd? My hair has been cut in an asymetrical bob for about a year now and I'm ready to grow it out again. It's a lot of work keeping it straight and looking nice, and I don't have enough time in the mornings before work.

So, any tips for how to grow it out painlessly? Do I grow it out a bit, get it cut into a traditional bob and go from there? I'd also like to eventually have some bangs...do I cut those now or wait? Quite frankly, my hair is a big pain in the butt and I'm clueless about how to make it look good. I literally have enough hair for two (maybe three) people on my head.
