I agree with all the suggestions. My legs basically start at my neck, lol. I will wear high waisted things, tho, with a crop top or tucked. Things with a wide banded waist... Sort of bull fighter style, where they do a bolero jacket and cumberbund, deliberately misproportioned/hiding where your waist really is. Or with a pencil skirt which obscures how high ones legs go up...

I avoid high waisted bottoms, tucking, belting at the natural waist, and things with lots of horizontal lines above the waist (but diagonal ones are often flattering, particularly if they extend downward below the waist). I also like waist-surrendering looks like sack dresses and flowy tops. I am also careful about things like the length/size of collars and necklaces as there is less physical space for those things to sit on. (I also have a short neck though).

Conversely I don't worry about leg shortening looks at all. I like things like midcalf boots, tunics, cropped pants, knee socks, gladiator sandals, etc, that all create horizontal lines and breaks across the legs. With long legs you can get away with pretty hectic layering in the leg area.

You've got some great tips from the other ladies, Shaz. I just wanted to add this blog post from Angie that has some extra suggestions:
http://youlookfab.com/2015/08/.....ort-waist/
I'm really liking the idea of tops with diagonal lines to sport with your skinny and straight leg jeans.

Thank you for asking these questions! It's always through others that I learn the most. I have longish legs and a shorter torso, and now I know why I have always loved ankle length and cropped pants -- and had a hard time with high-waisted pants. As my mother would say, "Ah, the penny drops."

Shaz, I also have a short torso and long legs, so I sympathize. I have the further complication of big boobs and hips/thighs, so some of the things others have mentioned don't work well for me (tunics are really tricky, and shift dresses look horrible on me). Here are things I find helpful:

- keep looks tonal -- not a lot of contrast between top and bottom
- semi-tucking or untucked looks rather than tucked. If I do tuck my tops, I keep the rise of my pants rather low.
- mid to lower rise pants. High rises are really tricky. If I wear a higher rise, I keep my top untucked.
- look for jeans and pants that are offered in varying lengths. I have to buy Talls and have a little hemmed.
- cropped pants can be great, and cuffing jeans works well to balance proportions and hide the occasional fact that my jeans are a little too short.
- high shaft booties and shoes with ankle straps are good for slightly shortening the visual leg line. You can pull off high-contrast looks with pants and shoes that are more challenging for other women.

I bet you could wear interesting patterned jeans and pants, crossover styles, etc. really well. The way I see it, you have a big advantage with your slim long legs. (I only got the long part, most definitely not the slim, so I can only enjoy these looks vicariously :-)).

Shaz - don't forget midrise jeans and match belt to top to lower visible waist. Also a hip belt over tunics or dresses will visually lower the waist. I have long legs compared to torso. Shift dresses or sheaths, hip belts, midrise pants/jeans, tunics/mini dresses over leggings. https://www.pinterest.com/Jenn.....-solutionshttp://www.thechicfashionista......shape.html

Thanks I'd like to be able to add some volume but limited as I don't wear skirts or dresses they are not practical for my day to day life and at the moment pants and jeans in my length are limited to one wash and two styles skinny and straight neither of which add volume hoping Spring will bring new options for tall woman or at least a new color if not style. Thanks for all your help

My daughter has similar proportions to yours, Shaz. Longer length tops and tunics that skim the waist work well for her, and nothing tucked at the waist.
With your slim figure and long legs you can afford to add some volume below the waist, also.

Adding nothing helpful here, only to say that I have the same body type and I struggle with this.

Casualwear is okay, because I don't tuck tops in, but for smart trousers and skirts I feel I should tuck in and wear a belt and I can't pull this off without my bust looking Dolly Parton-esque (bless her, but not the look I'm going for at work).

I have the same body type. One of the biggest helps for me has been to wear midrise pants, with the waist about an inch or so below the belly button. That gives the illusion of a longer torso.

I also like ankle pants, because they can make the legs look a little shorter. And you can wear heels with them and still not look out of proportion!

If you tuck, semitucking (tucking the front and leaving out the back) can make the torso look longer. I don't know why it works, but it does (at least for me).

If you're wearing pants, wearing footwear in a contrasting color to the pants can help the legs look shorter. Wearing footwear in a color similar to the pants generally extends the leg line.

Hi Shaz. Your proportions are actually easy to work with! Since you have long legs, the idea is to balance you top half with your bottom half, which will also hide the fact that you're short-waisted.

Here are some ideas:

1) Leggings/skinnes with tunics. A long top balances the top & bottom and also hides where your natural waist is.

2) Cropped jeans with longer tops/blouses. The cropped jeans will be perfect for you as your legs are longer. The top should be hip length.

3) Dresses and skirts. You can wear both short & midi length as your legs are long. A dress is another awesome way to create balanced proportions as its a single piece of garment. Skirts are great too for you.

I am short waisted too, and find the best tips are:

- High contrast tops can be hard, especially if shorter or tucked in.
- Tucking in can be hard full stop
- Being careful about the proportions with a skirt. I now usually almost match the skirt to the top, but wearing a jacket helps.
- Belts on the hips can work well, I am not doing this much at the moment but I find it an attractive look.
- I think long cardigans can be a great look on short waisted people too.

The plus is that there are some things we can wear more easily - cropped pants, midi dresses and skirts.

I think cropped jeans or pants of various cuff widths should work well. Especially with a color difference or bare skin between the shoe and cuff it helps to make the legs look shorter.

Well, I have the very opposite type, and I find it hard to wear tunics over leggings or skinny pants because a tunic ( meaning = very short dress, not a typical dress length) cuts me exactly in half, or thereabouts. Yes, it covers rear, but without high heels, then I have no legs left. That is also why although I need longish tops because my torso is long (if wearing untucked with typical pants ) I have to avoid not only tunics but tops that are straight and end at very low hip--just cut me in half. If the hem is asymmetrical or high-low or shirttail or cocoon, sometimes that will work.

So I'm thinking it would be the opposite for you; you could wear very long tops because you'd have a lot of leg left, even with flats. So if you like tunics and long sweaters, over relatively fitted jeans or pants, those probably will look good on you.
Another idea is, if you are trying some wider-leg pants (not necessarily crazy-wide) but they are reasonably fitted in the hip (meaning not bulky there) and possibly high-waisted, instead of tucking in tops, which give you a short torso look, you could wear your tops untucked ending at the mid-low hip (not as long as a tunic), whereas for me, the purpose of the high-waisted pant is so I can tuck in my tops or wear a short top to shorten my long torso relative to legs.
Plus if you see Angie's blog today, you could wear those cropped pants, wide-ish, and the longer fuller layers, because you would have the leg length, even with flats. A lot of the styling choices with the ankle straps and color choices is done to help mitigate any leg-shortening or "shtumpy" looks when things are chopped up by tops, cropped length, shoe etc. People with naturally longer leg proportions have a "leg up" (!) on that look without having to be so careful.

There is that "rule of thirds" which isn't rigid, but speaks to the proportions you are thinking about.

Hi, I'm wondering if any of the members could advise me on the best ways to balance out my top half with my bottom half or three quarters in my case. I have long legs and super short body there is not room for one finger between hip bone and rip cage. What would be the best way to create balance and should I stay away from heals and just stick to flat footwear instead. All ideas gratefully received
