I agree with all of you that #1 is 'breakable' in terms of establishing a signature look--you can be remembered after a meeting for both your great ideas *and* your great glasses, to use the example of bj1111.

I think the writer was basically talking about modesty (she mentions hem lines and transparent shirts)--and I do agree that one doesn't want to be remembered as the woman with the super low vee neck or teetery stilettos (or should I say I don't want to be remembered that way!) There is a fine line between being judgmental and urging modesty, so I think the writer is trying to toe that line, since having a signature style is a lot different than wearing a see-through shirt And rachylou, I think that probably you being you is your signature style!

JAileen--I agree that this is good for men, too, and I sent it to my son as well.

Absolutely 100% in agreement with all three. That said, I break #1 all the time. I am just not mature in my dress, and thus I have to TELL my work children that I am old, will not hang out with you, and am pretty much your den mother. I'm just incorrigible.

Re rule #1--I have a tough time reconciling this with having a signature style or piece which implies maemorableness. I'm the one on the dais with killer heels and hipster glasses. People don't recognize me in contacts or flats. Has it bitten me in the butt, maybe...but I own that grown up look.

I agree with all the advice. There are exceptions for point 1 - and there are times when the rule can be broken. But as a basic guideline I agree.

This is kind of a big-picture article--I think it is aimed more at young adults. However, as an actual adult, I found it an interesting point-of-view, especially the "costume" point, which applies to trends as much as work uniforms (at least for me!) I agree with point 1 (unless you are in a fashion-based field) and of course I agree with point 3. What do you think--is this good advice?
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10.....;contentCo
