I LOVE coat #2! Sooo pretty! If you dont need it that warm, SJP had some beautiful, warm microfiber ones last Fall, and Im sure they'll come thru again....are you outside for extended periods of time, or just a short time?

Of course I don't mind! Yea for coat twins( or any other garment twins)! :)
I'm 5-8, so you'll never find me in petite anything (except tops for certain skirts and maybe clams).

Thanks Michelle! I really do like the look of that first long one. I did read Angie's posts on coats and between that and how fantastic you looked in yours it is the one I'm leaning towards. And I think I'm going to do Navy just for some fun & color but it will still be neutral enough. Is yours a regular or petite? I don't know how the length differs betweent the two. Mind having a coat twin?

Lacey, the longer coat is the one you want for the frigid temperatures, no doubt about it. However I tend to favour longer coats anyway because they allow me to pair them with skirts and dresses. Even my lighter-weight coats for fall weather tend to be knee-length.

Coat no. 1 is the exact one that I bought, so no it's not longer (it's basically knee-length). It's certainly going to be nice and warm, but fortunately it's not excessively bulky or even all that heavy. I'd definitely consider that one. If you look at Angie's posts on coats and puffers in particular, this one has all the requirements. I was actively steared away from some of the other LE styles you posted, including the Luxe coat, though I can't quite remember why now.

If you want a shorter coat, may I suggest a couple of things...either a trench coat or a leather jacket. It'll sound weird, but I find leather to be wonderful for temperature control. It breathes and tends to accommodate my body in a surprising range of climates. If you want a trench, there's no end of stylish thigh-length ones available. Maybe not at LE, though. I own one knee-length trench that has a removable lining and is fabulously versatile. Mine is dark purple and goes with just about everything. It's in the YLF store, actually -- the Gallery satin-twill trench.

I think the longer ones will be warmer as they cover the bottom I had a lovely hip length puffer last year but never wore it because my bum and legs got cold. I'd also go for the cheveron stripes they are more flattering than the horizontal ones x

Michelle you've inspired me again! I need to get on the coat issue. Last winter was awful weather wise but somewhat okay because I spent most of it indoors. This year I know my son will want to be outside playing and I have many more commitments which mean I'll be a very active MOTG and I need some nice warm coats. I just don't know how to choose them. Currently I live in Northern VA (30 minutes south of DC) but as a military family we'll be moving in about 2 years and don't know where we'll be. The winter before last I was in beautiful southern CA and only needed a sweatshirt or light jacket. Before that was coastal North Carolina. I absolutely love Michelle's puffer and think something like that would be quite useful. I'm thinking a long one around my knees would keep me nice and toasty. I'd also like a shorter (just above the hips) coat too. My big questions are color & temperature. Do I get the longer coat in the warmest temperature or the shorter one? I'd really love to have at least one of them in navy but which one? I think black or gray for the other. I've got a Land's End near me that I'll be visiting next week to try some one but would like guidance before I go.

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

LONG
1) This is the longer version of Michelle's coat (I think its longer) in Navy and petite. Is it too warm for anything but annual blizzards? http://www.landsend.com/pp/Sty.....9-_-394641
2) http://www.landsend.com/pp/Sty.....1-_-396509
2)This one looks just so pretty! http://www.landsend.com/pp/Lux.....038;sku_0=::AG7&CM_MERCH=IDX_00002__0000000142&origin=index

Shorter
1) http://www.landsend.com/pp/Sty.....6-_-396500
