You have been given some great advice here. Do you have any shoes/boots you love - what is it about them that work for you?

I have white/grey hair & I find book-ending the way to go for me. I tried the pop of colour option & it never worked. Since I discovered snakeskin I haven't looked back. The other thing I think either makes it or breaks it for me is the visual weight of the boot or shoe - I have discovered that anything too heavy or too light doesn't work on me.

I am rather conservative and usually stick to black. However, a few years ago I started to branch out and have added a lot of metallics to my shoe collection - silver, white gold, bronze and even sparkles. They go with almost everything in my wardrobe! I added some animal prints in a brown/white zebra print and a leopard print. Since I wear a lot of neutrals these shoes add some zing for my comfort level. For the upcoming summer season, I have added some orange and green sandals. I did not invest a lot of money in these "colors", since I wanted to see if I actually wore them before spending real money. I alway spend real money for metallics as I get a lot of roi.

This is all great advice. I'm glad you asked the question because I've found the answers helpful! My shoe wardrobe is still on the small side and could use some revision.

I'm a recent convert (in the last two or so years) to more interesting shoes. Aida's advice about starting with a pair that bookends your hair is brilliant. The most useful shoes I own are ones that reflect my blonde hair. I wouldn't have ever guessed that before I bought them.

Of my shoes, the most useful ones that I have, in order:
Bookend my hair
Are metallics (my neutral metallic of choice is pewter)
Are neutral animal prints (leopard, both brown/black and white/black, and snakeskin)
Or are neutral patterns (tan and black for me).

I have some colored shoes, but they are in my core colors. The ones that I buy as a default. Teal. Red. Violet. Because they are my core colors, they feel comfortably "me" and get a lot of wear, whereas a non-me colors wouldn't be as versatile or comfortable.

I am on the pop of color shoe train.... I also like to do a different colored bright bag. It is a fun way to add two brights! (If you are into brights....)

Couple of Angie's post on the subject:
http://youlookfab.com/2008/05/.....ght-shoes/

http://youlookfab.com/2008/11/.....your-look/

I'm not much for a "pop of color" in my shoes, but I love a patterned or colorblocked (with two neutrals) effect on my feet. Even plain black shoes in a snake texture can be exciting, and I love buckles and hardware. It's like foot jewelry!

Aida has already given you some great advice. I would like to add that muted metallics such as pewter or bronze depnding on your coloring, animal prints like leopard and zebra can function effectively as neutrals an really elevate an outfit. So do bright colored shoes (red, cobalt blue) worn with a neutral outfit.

If you are building from scratch, it's probably a good idea to get a couple pairs in your core neutrals along with a color that will bookend your hair at first as a foundation. From there I think it's really dependent on your style, as well as on how much interest you personally like having at your feet. Printed shoes are a fun way to add a little extra oomph (pick a print that sings to you), as can colored shoes which can be either color-repeated in your outfit or not (I'd go with either a color you already wear, or one that you don't which still 'goes' with colors that you wear). Regardless of what you do, if you want the most bang for your buck make sure that the shoes are comfortable (no skimping there!), and that they make sense for your lifestyle and climate.

I love the idea of using shoes as the surprise (in a good way) in an outfit. However, I have no idea how to do that. I understand that shoes & clothing don't have to be all matchy, but then how do you choose the most interesting shoes? Can it be anything? Cool colors with cool colors, etc? Just some color in my palette? A color somewhere else in my outfit?

I'm ready to put some money into my shoe wardrobe, but want to get the best bang for my buck. I'd prefer to have several fabulous pairs instead of lots of okay ones.

Thanks for any & all advice.
