Shevia, thank you. You are very kind. Your assessment helps me confirm to myself that "sophisticated" is not the first word I would choose for my moniker/descripter!

Lynn, what a great point you bring up. I had not even thought of the high-low contrast in putting this outfit together. But it makes a lot of sense! I will definitively follow your idea and try the same blouse with a light colored topper: maybe that's the solution.

Gigi, I adore your brilliant analysis. This is such an eye-opener for me. I had not noticed how one could play with the areas of shadow and light in an outfit. This opens up tons of possibilities. Thank you!

Joy, Aurore, you're welcome.

Thumbs up to both! Different looks, but equally great to me -- the fact that you get a column of black in #1 makes is look very streamlined to me, but #2 is more playful and does indeed make you look both curvier and leggier. Fun analysis!

I love these instructional WIWs. They are so helpful to me in learning how and why proportions are important in outfit creation.

Although you look great in both cardigans, it is interesting in deciding what you want to convey on a given day.

I much prefer the shorter cardi. It seems to draw the eye upward, so you notice the blouse neckline more and your pretty updo. I feel like the longer cardi pulls the eye down into the darkest part of your outfit, which also happens to be the least interesting part of the outfit.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this. Playing with proportions is so interesting. Personally, I also prefer the longer cardi but I can see what Angie said regarding the proportions with the shorter cardi. Maybe it is the high contrast of the blouse with the skirt and shorter cardi that throws me off (I am a low contrast woman myself) and that is more noticeable to me with the shorter cardi. But all three work well on you.

What I noticed is your hair and smile - you look very pretty! Both variations work to my eye. I do see how one makes you look longer but I more notice the different mood - the long sweater seems a bit more sophisticated, the shorter one a bit more fun. And the tucked in, no sweater above looks great too.

Thank you all! How useful to have your input on this.
I agree that a shorter necklace and tucking the shirt would change proportions and eliminate the super short leg illusion.
With this, however, my original idea was to include a flapper vibe to an otherwise conservative look, hence the long necklace and absence of waist.
Now I see how the second pic is more RATE, it doesn't look as put together as the first one.
I also see that I must have been unconsciously inspired by the uniform I used to wear in high school (during the 80's).
Thank you for complimenting my hair. I just had it cut last week and had been a bit surprised by how short it turned out to be, but now I am getting used to it. It's a short blunt bob. Here it's blowdried upside down with mousse (lightly scrunching in the palm of my hand as I dry it).
BTW, the cardis are both navy blue, but I agree they look black.
Below is a pic of the outfit without the necklace and with the shirt tucked in.
Thank you so much for your feedback! It's so useful. You guys are wonderful!

I prefer the longer cardi too. With the shorter one the white shirt breaks the long vertical line.

This is a great outfit either way, but the long cardi pulls it all together really nicely.

Good insight! This also illuminates why I don't like short cardigans on me! I did recently buy a long one (in the Finds below, mostly for around-the-house wear as I'm a little tired of hoodies all the time). The long knit is not a slam-dunk on me because things like that tend to get hung up on my hips (huge sigh), but this skims as well as any knit does, and I only wear it open, to help that skimming effect along. Short cardigans just chop me up and emphasize curves that don't need to be emphasized, while the long ones elongate my short torso!

Your legs look longer in #2 for sure. That’s what cropped lengths do - lengthen the leg line from the waist up. It’s a handy styling strategy.

I also think that #1 is JFE because of the subtle column of black from head to toe. Not jarring to my eye. Try shortening the necklace.

I wanted to share this visual with you. The pics were not intended to showcase proportion, I was just trying out various toppers for fun. Yet when I looked at the pics side by side it struck me that with the long cardi, my body appears completely off in terms of proportions: legs all small, endless torso, and I even look a little gaunt. Whereas the cropped one suddenly give me back my curves.
