Thank you all for your compliments!
tanstaafl, I found my seamstress by chance, after many many unfortunate experiences with various ones in places like Stitch It or the dry cleaners. These people are there to make a buck and to repair a zipper or adjust hems on a jeans, nothing more. I think the best way is through the grapevine.
jussie, the color might have been part of the problem but I assure you that now it's a different sweater for me. Imbalance in proportion is as bad - if not worse - than color or shape itself with clothes, I now think. Actually, I will try this with white bottoms and I have a hunch it might work even better. White sweater with bad shape: thumbs down. White sweater with right fit: totally feels fine. Yes, the white jumps forward, though, but just not in a bad way now.

LOL you guys I wrote "yolk" instead of yoke and you were all graceful enough not to point to that mistake! Only just now did I realize that a yoke sweater wasn't inspired from egg yolks! Ha ha ha! So that explains it! I thought maybe it was called this way because it vaguely mimicked the design of a crushed egg trickling down one's shoulders! No jokes!

Interesting post. How handy to have a seamstress :). I also tend to think white can make a person feel bigger as it “jumps forward” to the eyes rather than receding to the eyes like darker colours. Just my personal take on white.
Cheers!

Cool. I think it’s very important no matter our weight to realize clothing must fit and flatter us, and that it’s an impersonal issue. Well fitted clothing makes us look our best, and poorly fitted clothing is a reflection of the garment not being the right fit, not us being the wrong shape.

You look terrific in the “after” sweater. You are definitely not fat! I assume this is not one of those heavy Icelandic sweaters. If it were, I would want it kind of loose.

Nice alteration and explanation. I am amazed at the difference a slight nip or tuck can make. The after is much improved, although it is a subtle change. This post will be very helpful to the many YLFers talking about focusing on FIT, thanks!

Aurore, Victorian shape, yes! I will try to go even further in that direction and add lace-up booties and an updo. Thanks!

Torontogirl, Ginger, in the first set, look at the sides, this is where the difference is most obvious; in the second set, it's the area just under the breasts. There is a much bigger difference IRL that was hard to capture on camera. Good for you Ginger to have discovered the benefits of tailoring!

Impressive! The fit improvement is especially obvious on the side view.
With the wide trousers you chose, I think the slimmer waist of the improved sweater gives the whole outfit a victorian vibe I would have never thought knitwear could have. Such a beautiful silhouette!

I had this wonderful fluffy yolk design sweater but never wore it because I felt (I will admit) "fat" in it - but what I think I really felt was that proportions were wrong; and (I will speak for myself) I have come to realize that often when I want to qualify an outfit as fattening, I really mean that the proportions are off, because I'm not "fat".
Well this whole "fat" thing was so very counterproductive because instead of seeing something was wrong with this garment bought one lucky day on sale at Winners I thought the problem pertained to my body and therefore kept the garment aside, for "when I would suit it". Mistake! I finally saw the light and brought it to my seamstress who is literally a cross between a God-sent angel and a magical fairy.
She immediately identified the problem: too much gaping from the sides and... too big around the waist. So she arranged it and below are the before and after pics.
(In the first one, there is an open slit at the bottom, but because the sweater is meant to be form fitting and cropped, the gaping slits did not work. In the second pic, slits are closed and sides are taken in a bit).

(I also added side views. My arm is unfortunately hiding the slit in both, but you can see how in the first of the two the sweater looks fuller in the front).

UPDATE: here is the sweater with a few different bottoms.
