I have 2 pairs of those Sam Edelman ballet flats. I love them. They absolutely will stretch out though, so I would not size up.

Have you tried the ballet styles from AGL for example, with soft elastic around the top? That should correct the fit challenge and keep the flats on your feet.

In my experience, soft ballet flats (whether fabric, leather, or synthetic) will stretch out if they're worn regularly.

I was told the same thing, anne -- though I can't remember where! But that because I have a wide forefoot and narrow heel, most ballet flats are going to fit poorly and slide off my foot.

I switched to penny loafer styles and never looked back -- they suit my aesthetic better in any case. The smoking-slipper trend was a good one for me, too.

Hello, long time lurker and first time poster here. :)

I know this is an old topic, but I have a related question regarding the fit of ballet flats, and I didn't want to start a whole new thread.

My question is, how snugly should ballet flats fit? I have small feet, with a narrow heel but fairly wide forefoot, and like the original poster I have trouble finding flats that I don't slip out of. I just ordered the Felicia flats from Sam Edelman, and I got both a size 5 and 5.5 and now I can't decide which ones to keep. The 5 feels perfect on my smaller foot but very snug (though not painful at all, the leather is buttery soft) on my biggest foot. The 5.5 feels alright now, but I worry that they will stretch and that my smaller foot with start slipping out of it.

Small sized shoes are very hard to find where I live and I am used to wearing a size too big so now that I have a chance I want to make sure I get a proper fit! Do any of you have advice?

Definitely give the elastic-sided ones a try. I've got some and find that thy're pretty securely stuck on my feet compared to the non-elastic ones which fall off when I sit and cross my legs.

I'm not sure that my feet are narrow. I have no problems finding other shoes that are a bit higher on top of the foot. I do have flat feet (I'm usually wearing orthowhat'sthename?) perhaps that is the difficulty. I have tried a lot of styles except the ones with elastic - will try those and see if they are better.

I also saw a pair with a higher cut that looked a bit more structured as if the leather was not as soft and they'd give more support to the feet, but they are only available in green. Very pretty, but not what I need or want at the moment.

I'll not give up yet!

PM, I have given up on ballet flats since a saleswoman told me that I had a small heel in relation to the ball of my feet and that was the reason that every one I ever tried on simply fell off (I never tried those one with elasticated sides though). There was some name for this that I can't recall right now.

That doesn't really answer your question, and hopefully isn't your situation - but it might be

Yeah, maybe stringy's right. I have a few different styles and I can't recall any of them gaping at the sides. I like them a little bit soft, heavy fabric or soft leather, so they kind of conform to my feet. I assume you're tried some different brands and style?

If you're getting gaping at the sides, is it possible that you need a narrow size 42? Maybe they assume that because your feet are long, they must also be wide, and you've got long skinny feet? Do you have this problem with other shoes?

I have a question for all of you who wear ballet flats: How are they supposed to fit? I can't find a pair that are comfortable and look good on my feet. I wear a European size 42 (that's a US size 10 or UK size 8). I always have problems with gaping at the sides and I feel like I will loose the shoes when walking. I think the problem is that they are all so low cut.

I do have two pairs with straps across the foot that hold them in place, but they look a bit like doll's shoes to me (well, except for their size).

Do your ballet flats gape at the sides, too? Or is there a secret to wearing them? Any ideas?
