It’s a new forum, and I wanted to get a feeling of how things work and the vibe of the people here before starting to post religiously. </p> <p>I saw no introduction topics only fashion discussion, and I felt if I had only asked other members to tell about themselves the topic could get way off topic, I saw how topics go from one discussion to the next already. When I signed up it never asked my birth year so I don’t think that’s even an option to see about other members, and it feels more personable knowing who is responding and the age to me, rather than go only by a profile photo ( if they even have one) ☺️ Maybe that’s just how I feel it’s easier to fit in online or others feel the same too and we’re too nervous to ask and relieved I did it instead. </p> <p>Per the original question, yes I am 30 thirty years old. For my fashion sense changing over the recent years, I don’t see too much of a difference other than how different I dressed in school. I used to wear bell bottoms, distressed jeans, overalls, leggings, graphic tees, hoodies. Once it reached my twenties I wore less baggy clothing like hoodies and distressed jeans and wore more form fitting tops and skinny jeans. There are some things that look a little too “juvenile” now. For example, sundresses and ditsy florals seem too “young”. I find mid-thigh skirts too short for me now (even though my legs still look ok). I find sky-high heels a bit too much for me now because I’m not willing to deal with the discomfort. (I’ll still wear heels though.)</p> <p>Age also plays a part in how much I think about beauty products! There was a stretch of time where I wore a lot of sunscreen just to avoid wrinkles (I’ve since stopped as I can’t stand sunscreen, but there is a shift towards caring a lot about skin.) I also now wear more eye makeup than i did before because I think I look a lot better (before, makeup didn’t really make me look better). I now think about dyeing my hair, the only purpose of which is to look younger. I haven’t dyed mine yet, but it’s been on my mind...</p> <p>I guess the last thing I’ll say is that being older means I have more money to experiment with style. So I am definitely a lot more stylish now than I was in my 20s!</p> <p>Other than those things, my age hasn’t influenced my style that much. I am going to go against the grain and say that my age has impacted my style alot! My priorities, activities, and preferences have evolved significantly over the decades, and I observe my own set of rules about age-appropriateness (always have, even when younger). I don't see that as a negative, nor do I find it restrictive (and I would certainly not say that's true of anyone else; just speaking for myself - my rules are my own). I think Jenni has a good explanation for that—after you’ve been through a couple fashion cycles, things aren’t “new”—it’s just a return to something earlier, perhaps with a twist. Skinnies were a bit of a shock to me, and since I recall bell-bottoms while I was a kid and am enjoying their return now, I won’t be surprised to see skinnies fade and eventually be reprised. </p> <p> Rachylou, that’s true. And as a young woman, one sees many listicles directed at what you “should” have/have done by a certain age. But eventually they realize we aren’t paying attention after a certain age and stop writing them. </p> <p>Jenni, also an example of my 16-year-old son being quite ageist and flippant about it right now. I do hope that anyone who read his comment on YLF commenters realizes I mentioned it only to have a laugh, not because I give it any credence. </p> <p>Gaylene, we’re still working up to it? I only know her from Twitter... ‘Faking Normal.’ About not being able to retire, struggling to make ends meet as an older person. Anyways. With the way jobs are now - I work in a bakery - and housing prices - both the young and old (from 20 to 70 at my workplace), making the $900/mo rent for just a room is a pretty scary affair. But the older folks have to worry a lot about age discrimination when it comes to getting and keeping a job. I lean on myself hard not to think about age when interviewing candidates, not the least of which because it’s actually illegal.
