When I color, I typically do the same schedule, sometimes I shorten it to every 6-8 weeks if the color is dramatic and roots start to show. When I want to grow my hair long, I stick to 8-10 weeks, but sometimes my hairstylist will just trim the face frame and leave the back alone if the ends look good. Mine was like that until about a year and a half ago. It's also very thick, for blonde hair. More than one former boyfriend used to hold onto it like reins, (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). My present boyfriend, whom I've known since we used to play in the sandbox, together, always called me Sister Golden Hair when we were in High School. One year during the student Variety show, he sang that song to me. I thought I was going to die!!!! Anyways, funny how the ones with the longest hair, always seem to end up with the shortest hair. Through the years I went shorter and shorter, wearing a chin length bob with funky bangs for years. The turning point was 1991 when I went SUPER short and I haven't looked back. My hair is indeed my signature. One BIG advantage: I look years younger than I am! With short hair there is nowhere to hide, so I have been meticulous about makeup (AND sunblock) over the years. Plus, my earrings are always noticed! I wear my hair fairly long partly because I don't like having to go in very often, and I don't dye and rarely heat style, so it doesn't get too damaged. When I have it cut, I will go out of my way (almost an hour) to have the same hairstylist cut my hair that's always done it, and I often cut off more than I need to on purpose. I've donated my hair once before, and I had to grow my locks out to the small of my back in order to do it--it was a long-ish bob afterward. I don't think I could stand having it that long again, though. I'm totally into trying new styles and cuts (bangs, layers, bobs, whatever), since I don't want to look back at my life and realize I had the same hair all along! The times I've tried to do these myself usually makes my hairdresser purse her lips when I do get in to see her. I don't really have a time line. I stuck with the same cut for a long time after trying to change multiple times and hating my haircut! I have healthy hair so it doesn't get split ends too quickly. I'm also guilty of not going to the same person every time. I live across the street now from the woman that has cut my hair since I was 5. I noticed when I got the worst haircuts from her was always right after she heard someone had passed away and she was going to have to go to the funeral home to do their hair and makeup, so if we found out something like that had just happened, we would leave and go another day! She does a great job for basic haircuts and obviously knows how my hair behaves! And she's still cheap, $15 for a wash and cut and she doesn't charge extra for a blow out... just does it if she has time. Of course I tip generously. Another is my boyfriend's cousin. I've only been to her a few times, so we're still getting to know each other I think. The expensive one is who I go to when I want a more stylish cut with layers and such. A few days ago, I had a ton chopped off. My neighbor said I could have waited 3 more months and would have been able to donate it, but it's just too hot here to wait! I was tired of wearing it up all the time. When I can post pictures, I'll post a before and after. I found a great website that helped me pick it. There's a more "stylish" one I like, but I wasn't sure about going that short yet! I cut it just before it starts needing to be cut. I also get it highlighted every six weeks. My last four haircuts: June '08, October '08, March '09, February '11. I might get one this summer. The issue is that I don't live in the same city as my last good stylist, and I've had bad luck with substitute stylists (the October '08 cut) and have been reticent to try again (after she fixed the October cut in March, there's that loooooooong gap). I was sloppy so I usually forgot to call her untill it was bothering me so it would be 7 or 8 weeks and the last week my hair was a horrible helmet. Now it is getting longer, I let her come less often. I guess it will be 3 times per year from now on as I have passed those difficult points in growing hair where you need a little help from the stylist. She was wonderful in keeping my hair pleasant while growing it. My hair is about 1/2 to 3/4 inches on the top, a tad shorter on the sides, with longer fringey bangs. I spike it with Schwartzkopf's Got2be Glued. It's fun and I never have a bad hair day. I lived in Germany from 1988 to 2000 and the local salon owner created this style for me in 1991 before I went camping in Denmark with my husband and 5-year old son. Now that it's getting longer, I'd like to keep it down to four times a year. I'm still growing it though. I started growing it in November, and just had it trimmed in March. I'm going to try and make it through to August before my next trim. While my hair is in good condition, it does require some cleaning up along the way. When freshly cut it is just past the shoulders, and then I let it grow until I get sick of it, which usually takes about 4-6 months. I'm lucky because my hair is healthy, I don't really get split ends, and it seems to retain its shape well. Krishnidoux, that sounds like a good idea. I think I will try going in for a shampoo and bang trim in a few weeks. Also, I plan to stick with the same person that has done a nice job from now on. No more switching stylists in the same salon just because they have an opening. They never get a feel for my goals and hair like that. Dianthus, that's what I usually tell my stylists when I go in... to trim the ends and clean up the layers. I think the "clean up the layers" part really throws them off and I end up with a lot off. I have 2 great hairdressers that are also friends. One of whom I actually work with and see regularly at the bar, and yet I get a haircut 3 times a year average. Maybe 4 if I'm living in town and not moving coast to coast that year.
