I wear different colors of eye shadow, eye liner, blush, and lipstick all the time, but as far as applying the makeup I pretty much do it the same way all the time. I don't experiment with cat eye liner, smoky eyes, contouring, etc. I did go from BB cream to just under eye concealer and powder over my SPF 30 moisturizer a while ago because I was sick of staining my shirt and coat collars from the color on my jawline.

This may be a symptom of a being in a rut, but I don't think that much in terms of updating the way it's sometimes described in magazines, such as, do a cat eye, or the smoky eye or dramatic lip, or bronzy or whatever, because I go for the more understated, "natural" look though of course it's not natural!

But, I do think in terms of updating products, such as, which ones give the effect I'm going for and with better something--more natural, easier to apply, easier to remove, less irritating, sunscreen, a color that I would not have though of by how it looks in the store but it looks good when applied.

I guess I also do update color-wise in the sense of what may look better now. I still look more alive with some lip color, when I can remember to wear it, but I have gone "off" all of my former plums and berry colors and almost always am choosing that has been toned down, often is part of the "nude" lines though may have a rose or mauve cast to it. Everything else that is a "real" color just looks fake and garish to me now. Wearing Revlon in Mink.

The biggest inhibitor for me is FOWM--Fear of Wasting Money--on more products which get some rave review but it was all hype. I really would like to get more trial products and try in store but without an official makeover or anything.
So I like to read reviews and see if enough comment on the same feature or benefit that I am looking for.

I don't update very often. I stick with the same basics most of the time..tinted foundation, concealer, eyebrow pencil, mascara, lip color and add eye shadow and eyeliner some of the time. I find I'm just not that interested in new colors once I find what looks good on me and I don't stray from a soft natural look. Can't imagine I looked very good in the bright blue eyeshadow and white lipstick that was trendy in my HS days

I did pay for a makeup lesson recently and did learn a little bit but not quite as much as I had hoped. I did it at the salon where I get mani/pedi's and massages, they also do hair (but I go elsewhere)...and sell Aveda products...so there was no real pressure to buy anything and I did not.

I honestly have never seen a huge difference on me between drugstore brands and the higher end ones on most things. I once tried Sephora and Dior foundations (one on each side of face) and even the SA agreed with me that there was no perceptible difference. I do use Laura M tinted moisturizer. I have been using higher end skin care brands but have recently discovered Paula Begoun's web site and am exploring trying some less expensive brands there too. I'm extremely fortunate to have very good skin and I have worn sunscreen daily for years so I don't find the higher end skin care products to be worth the $$.

I'd rather save my $$ for clothes!

I think I just evolve gradually! I am pretty clear on what I like on me, and what I do not like.

I have added more blush and eyebrow pencil and reduced eyeshadow. I change lip colours but within a palette of pink coral and red- my small lips and wide face don't cope with dark lips.

Lol it's somewhat true, I haven't had a full-face consult but I've gotten lip and eye consults from MAC and Benefit respectively and basically got something akin to what the assistant was wearing, i.e. heavy and dramatic. I wanted statement lips so this was fine and I found some good colors, but the Benefit brow thing... I didn't want my brows to look artificially squared off in the inner corners and more striking than any other facial feature...

I never wore mascara (too much of a pain with glasses), but I have been using LashMD formula for about a year and my lashes are ridiculously long and thick now - I only use it once every three days.

I like to look for one or two new items each season; I follow makeup trends. For example, last fall I purchased some dark lip colors and also used existing items to create a "day" smokey eye. Then, I got super busy and decided that tightlining and a little mascara and blush was all I could muster! Well, and lipstick which is an easy way to brighten things up. So, I guess I update pretty frequently depending on trends that appeal to me and lifestyle needs. Also, when I just get sick of a product, I'll shop for something else.

I don't think I've ever done a makeup overhaul, but I've gradually changed things over the years. I've always worn mascara (blond eyelashes only look good on Tilda Swinton), but at some point I started wearing a conditioning eyelash "undercoat" as well. It makes the mascara last longer. I rarely need concealer for blemishes now, but the trade-off is that now I need it for my undereye circles. I rarely bother with eyeliner or eyeshadow. I never really wore it much. And my favourite lipstick colours change about every five years.

One thing I never forego these days is blush, now that the "bloom of youth" has gone.

Never, I guess I probably should. I wear very little makeup and have never been very interested in it. I mostly just wear a light BB creme and some eyeliner and mascara. I can't wear regular lipstick at all, it just disappears right away and dries my lips out. I do use a lipstain many days but that doesn't last too long either (maybe because of my all-day coffee and water drinking?) However, as I am getting older, my skin could use more cover so I should probably start experimenting with something that smooths without feeling heavy. I hate spending the money unless I know I'm going to like it, I'd rather spend it on shoes!

In answer to your question...probably not often enough...however, I am doing something about it at the moment, after a long time of doing nothing. I'm going to be trying some eyeshadows made by a company that does colours by season(as per colour analysis). I'm also going to try a primer to go under my foundation and I just updated my moisturisers.

About once a year I might try new lip color or eyeliner color. I just ordered some blue mascara to try for a change of pace (per Angie's rec). I don't wear a lot of noticeable makeup but I've always enjoyed "playing" with it. I went for a long time only using really natural makeup brands but many of those weren't great looking (though maybe safe to eat). I still like my lip color to be pretty safe to eat so I stick with Aveda, Burts Bees and similar for that.

This has just been on my mind! In general, I'm pretty happy with my makeup routine and colors but I have seriously been thinking about paying for a professional lesson (not just a counter consult). I've never felt confident in doing my eyes and think that's where I could use the most help. There's a couple of professionals in my area that I follow on Instagram so I've seen their "work" and they aren't there to sell products. I am also thinking about seeing a "beauty stylist" at Nordstrom because they can work across all brands. I've never liked the feeling I've gotten from the local Sephora- too loud and way too much makeup on their own faces (I kind of get the same thing from the MAC store and counters). And certainly not to discredit the young artists (because it's part of their job to wear the newest trend) but I feel more comfortable around a softer look. Like a hair stylist, I think it can be an intimate experience so I want to find someone I gel with and would want to keep going back to.

I love make up. No one would suspect this unless they knew me really well. I don't wear very much. I love watching make up artist videos and have dreamed of becoming a make up artist. I have a collection of MAC eyeshadows (my favourite), a couple of blushes (MAC, Nars) and a few lipsticks (Nars). One BB cream. Zero foundation. One eyeliner (Laura Mercier). Many, many brushes (MAC, Laura Mercier). Lancôme mascara.
I have gone for consultations at the MAC and Laura Mercier counters. I have also gone to the NARS counters and asked for advice about lipstick, etc. I have had make up done by indie make up artists.
I prefer the no make up make up look. I will contour my eye but never my face. I already have rosy cheeks. Blush is a no go on me.

I have found the best place to go for a consult is MAC, Laura Mercier or NARS. MAC for eyes, Laura Mercier for other stuff and Nars for blush and lipstick.

I have a pretty standard look but I do check out Bobbi Brown's basic face probably about once a year ... it stays fairly consistent but she does tweak it to keep up with the times. I also love buying new lipstick colors although I pretty much only wear either a rose beige, rose, or plum ... I have lots of fun colors that I end up giving to my daughter to play with hah!

I change which combination of products I wear, mascara, eye liner, blush etc. My skin is sensitive but there are a lot of products that are tuned to that and I like changing brands and formulas. I just started using a mineral powdered base instead of liquid and I'm loving the finish and less mess.

Changes are inspired by the season, curiousity and novelty and I do try to keep looking at myself and adjusting cosmetics to what I'm actually seeing in the mirror today.

I love to play with makeup. I keep my base the same, but I need very little because my skin tone is very even despite my having Rosacea. I have around 23 shades of eye shadow, greens, purples, pinks, blues, greys, brown, taupe, silver, and white. I have 5 colors of blush, and I have maybe 10 lip colors. I admit I'm an addict, however, I still wear very little makeup.

I mostly use the shadows as eye liner, I use very little blush, I always use a lip color, and mascara. I use brown black mascara, but I have been advised many times to try navy. I never use a make up counter except for foundation matching and to get my mascara and lip colors.

Lip colors are tough for me. My lips are darkly pigmented so whatever I try changes to a much darker color after 5-10 minutes. What I see initially is not what I get as I go through the day. I need to try a color leave and walk around and then check to see if I like it. It's very time consuming.

So, my answer is that I change my makeup almost daily. Sometimes I hit on a combination I really like and stick with it for a few days but never more than a week. I definitely like to mix things up. It's like a big set of water colors.

I love experimenting with drugstore brands. The expensive stuff, i usually only update as needed. Sadly, i have never had a consultant at any dept store do my make up. Honestly, i feel a tad intimidated by them and im afraid they will sell me all sorts of stuff i dont really need.

I don't do a whole lot to change up my makeup -- actually, I think the most recent new products I've bought were recommendations from YLF! Chanel lip stain is the main one that comes to mind.

I am open to updating from time to time, but I have a hard time imagining doing anything terribly different from what I do now. I keep it pretty simple -- LM tinted moisturizer (which I love!), a little powder blush, sometimes a little bronzer, eye pencil as a liner, black mascara, lip stain and a bit of color over top. I look awful in dramatic lip color, so that's kind of off the table. I have about a dozen eye shadows that I barely use -- mostly just for evenings.

I once had a full makeup session as part of a "spa day" package, and i hated the way they did my skin -- concealer and way too much coverage in the foundation. Someone took a flash photo of me afterward and I looked like I had a waxy mask on. Yuck. So I would be open to a consult, but I wish it could be with someone I already know and trust, who understands 1) what I want, and 2) what looks good on someone my age. A lot of the women at Sephora are really young and either want to do their makeup on everyone, or assume that because you are "a certain age" you want to cover EVERYTHING at the expense of actual skin texture. Yes, I know I have freckles and brown spots, but I think covering them heavily just makes my skin look weird.

Since I am pushing myself to transform my look (and even more, my attitude around these things), I'm planning on going very soon for a MAC consult. The past few years I've just bought makeup at Sephora, but I really hope to get better advice and a few differentiated looks. I'm told they won't do the hard sell (anyway, I won't buy whatever they might push at me--for example, I'm completely uninterested in foundation. It may make me look more polished, but I just don't use it and probably never will.)

I know these trips to the makeup counter easily end up costing a lot. I hope I can go for over a year at least. Then again, if I'm thrilled with the result, it might not be a bad investment to frequent them more than annually.

Every time I've had a makeup consult, it's been a complete disaster. I recently change my foundation makeup and blush via a phone consult with Jane Iredale reps. They were very helpful. I switched up my eyeliner, too, but that just involved a trip to CVS.

I haven't had an overhaul type update for a few years, but like Lisa I'm always checking things out. I'm quite addicted to youtube makeup channels and always want to try new things. I love makeup and have fun with it. I find it much easier and more fun to shop for than fashion, that's for sure!

It makes a big difference - Sterling, you're right. These women are both close friends - and don't do a ridiculous hard sell. In fact, my Bobbi Brown friend is always reminding me that I don't need this or that - I already have whatever it is. You have to like the way they do makeup too - obviously. I really miss having a Laura Mercier counter in Winnipeg - now it's only available at Sephora , which is an amateur-hour gong show at the best of times.

A couple of times a year - at least twice. I have two women friends that are excellent makeup artists : one of whom manages the Bobbi Brown counter here, and the other is an independent artist. I get a full-on BB do-over usually in fall and again in spring with new colours, new products etc and go home with a pile of new things each time. The indie artist is the one I ask specific questions of (like : I need a new foundation or concealer or a new lipstick etc) and she'll sell me any brand she likes. But I'm a little obsessed with makeup and am ALWAYS checking it out.
