Haha Shiny my Mum used to make my clothes too. She either had me and my brothers wearing matching shorts/overalls made out of curtains, or had me wearing pink girly dresses in a strawberry shortcake print (ok maybe I loved it at the time!). Perhaps we have both been scarred by the experience in different ways!!!

In hindsight I really admire all the sewing she used to do. Wish I could!!!

On a slightly related topic, I think the way you guys over there don't have school uniforms can be a really tough thing. I'm grateful that for the 12 or so years I was at school I didn't have to make that decision everyday and worry about how I would look. I'm sure it causes a lot of heartbreak/teasing/bullying for many kids growing up.

Yublocka, I think I was psychologically scarred as a child!!! I do have a bad memory of going to a New Year's party (that I wasn't supposed to go to because I was under 21) wearing jeans when everyone else was dressed to the hilt. I didn't know any better. But I think it started earlier, in kindergarten/grade school. My mom sewed all my clothes and I remember having to wear some atrocious homemade outfits and getting teased. And then there was the whole 6th grade thing, when bell bottoms went out of style overnight, but my mom refused to buy me new jeans because (short as I am) I hadn't grown out of my jeans yet.

My mom and I have talked about this a lot, actually. I also have memories of her stressing endlessly about what to wear whenever she had to dress up and go out, which she thinks was the real influence. Ultimately I think it's just something I was probably born with - but luckily my kids haven't inherited it from me, because they are fine dressing down or up or ... sideways. Neither one inherited the gene that screams "I can't wear that to school - I won't fit in!!!" In fact, they wear stuff I would never in a million years have worn, and don't think twice about it.

Weekdays - dress for work, come home shower put on pjs/loungewear
Weekends - wear Pjs/loungewear right up until the point at which I leave the house then get dressed be it gear for jogging/going out somewhere

If I don't leave the house, I don't get changed until putting on fresh loungewear/Pjs that night.

Shiny I find it interesting you would rather be overdressed than underdressed. I am completely the opposite. If I feel even the teeniest bit overdressed I am simply not comfortable. Don't ask me what the psychology behind that is!!!

When I worked somewhere other than my home, I changed from PJs to work clothes, then to loungewear or "grubbies" for yardwork, etc., then back to PJs. Now that I'm a SAHM and work part-time from home, I tend to dress for the day and stay that way unless we're going out for the evening. I try to dress for the day's high temp and then throw on a cardi or something if I'm chilly in the mornings. I do change to gear for serious workouts, but most of my exercise is walking my daughter to/from school, the library, the post office, etc., etc., so I wear whatever I'm wearing for the day (always with comfy flat or very low-heeled shoes).

Pj's – loungewear – what I’m wearing for the day - perhaps a change a shoes if I can’t walk my girls in the shoes I’m wearing – loungewear – pj’s.

If I go out at night, I might change into something smarter or warmer. If we power walk, I’ll get into gear. That’s it. Interestingly, by the sounds of things I change in and out of clothes less frequently than most of you. It might have somethig to do with the fact that I do not workout.

I do think summer is a time to change outfits more often. For example if we go to the beach or go boating or go for a long walk, I'll get sweaty. So we come home to shower and change to go out somewhere. Or if coming home isn't possible, I'll bring a change of clothes because I don't like staying in a wet bathing suit or sandy beach dress.

Winter - not so much. However, I will often change again to go out at night. I'll go from smart casual to smartER casual.

A lot of times it depends on my shoewear. If I'm running errands during the day, that calls for flats. But if we are then going out somewhere in the evening where I want to look a bit snappier, I will change outfits so I can wear heels. This often requires different jeans, at very least. Likewise, if I've been wearing heels all day but the evening's activities involve lots of walking on cobblestones or my feet need a break, I may change my outfit to work better with flats.

I suppose it also depends on the weather too. If the day has been such that I have been driving around in a car popping in and out, a car-length coat is fine. But later if we are going to be walking around braving the elements, I may change outfits so that my outfit works better with a longer, warmer coat.

If I've been to the office but later we are going out to an art opening, yes, I will change because conservative officewear seems out of place at a trendy art opening - and probably more importantly, vice versa!!!

If it's a weeknight other than a Friday, and I've been working from home all day or dressed up just to pop out and run errands/pick up the kids/go to the grocery store, and we are planning to go out and socialize, I am apt to change into something that I might wear had I been in an office all day, since this is what my friends who are meeting us after work will be wearing.

If it's a Friday night, I am apt to change to dress down, not up, because my friends all dress down on Fridays. Still smart casual though - just a little more casual for example I tend to wear knit tops and flat shoes on Friday nights. Actually it's least likely I will change outfits on a Friday because what works for day usually works for night too.

I guess you could say I dress for the occasion. DH and I were talking about that Friday night, in fact. He wanted to know why I wasn't dressed to go out when he got home. I told him I would take only 5 minutes to get dressed because I already had a range of outfit ideas, but I didn't know what we were doing yet. We had a range of possible ideas for the night, but hadn't yet settled on a game plan. Since he basically wears the same uniform every day, he thought that was silly.

But then I explained about how ever since I was a child, I have had this phobia about dressing inappropriately for an occasion. For example being the only one in pants when all the other women are in dresses. I cannot be comfortable in situations like that. I would rather be overdressed than underdressed, but my goal is always "appropriately" dressed. So some of the things on his list of possibilities would've called for a graphic tee, jeans, cons (going to see a band) whereas others called for something snappier and trendier (going to an art opening or the theater).

Most days I dress in something smart casual and keep it on all day, even to exercise. I do change shoes for the gym and remove outer layer(s). I don't own pajamas or lounge clothes nor does my husband. The exception is when needing to wear something more dressy part of the day and the more casual clothes for another part. On Sundays we dress up more for Mass, then usually put on something more casual for the rest of the day. Then it might be really casual like yard work clothes.

I get dressed for work, and the come home and change into lounge wear. If I have any activities after work, I usually wear the same clothes. Sometimes on Saturdays if I'm home doing chores all day I'll wear lounge wear the whole day, but I do dress appropriately if I need to go out somewhere.

My schedule is a lot like Hanna's - work, dinner, TV and sleep. I like to relax once I get home.

if i change a lot, it's mostly because i start having qualms about my outfit right before i'm supposed to leave for work! that's what happened to me yesterday. i must have changed 3 times. sigh.

but mostly i'm a one-outfit-at-work, one-outfit-at-home kinda gal. once i get home i shower, change into lounge wear/jammies, make dinner, watch tv and SLEEP.

Anne - I find that in the summer, I cycle through a day like you do because Seattle will have chilly mornings and evenings but warm afternoons. So on days that I am at home, I start in jeans and a long sleeve top and as it warms up change into a short sleeve top and clams or a skirt then as it cools down in the evening change back into my warmer clothes. If I am working at home part of the day and out and about part of the day, I usually wear "home clothes" while at home and only get dressed smart casual for when I actually leave the house. When I worked in an office, I got dressed in the morning and usually kept the same clothes on in the evening when I got home. It didn't seem worth it to change out of work clothes into casual clothes and then a few hours later change into pjs.

Anne, very true - I wish I had time to lounge! In terms of changing into home clothes, I actually did this when I was working too. Got up in the morning, got dressed to go to work and would come home and put on my "home clothes." My parents always did this so that's probably why I do. My husband, on the other hand, gets dressed for the day in what I would call his "dressy" clothes and wears them all day (so he doesn't change to go out unless he has to get really dressed up). His parents are the the same way - they are very smartly dressed at home and don't really need to change to leave the house.

Ideally just once - I don't like to leave the house & come back to change, and I don't like carrying outfits with me (except to the gym.) I go dancing after work once a week and find that a skirt is most comfortable for me to dance in, so I just wear a work-appropriate skirt or dress all day.
