I would go for the more expensive with better return options. You either end up with shoes you love for x amount (assuming you are willing to pay that if you love them) or you return and are not out the money. Otherwise you are out the money and possibly stuck with shoes you don't want.

Wow, those are some shoes! Knowing your style, I knew they would be smashing. :^)

My opinion is that based on the price point of these shoes, I would go with the easier return and the better customer service. You have not only the return issue if the shoes don't work, but what if they do work and you keep them but something goes wrong with them a few months down the road? I think the Canadian company would be much more likely to help you out than the European one.

That's such a big price difference I'd want to save the money. But it's true customer service over here doesn't hold a candle to the U.S. As long as you follow their guidelines though you should be okay.

Ditto what Dana said. Unless the special service is really simple, it will be a pain to return and you don't want to deal with that. Especially when you are talking about $50 difference and even more so if you have to get it pre-authorized in any way (check). I'm assuming the shoes are expensive enough that $50 isn't a third of the price. Also, frankly, sunk cost for mailing really irritates me. Free shipping and returns are worth more. Hence my love of Zappos and willingness to pay more versus 6pm. But that's me.

Hmmmm. How likely are they to wrk? If you are super sure, I would risk the Belgium company. If you are not 90%+ sure! I would go with Canada.

As others have said, you are super busy, and 5 days is not much time. And shipping back is going to be expensive. I think Una said shipping boots back to the UK was $65.

And, as others have also said, the US and Canada retailers seem more okay with returns to begin with.

That's a hard one. I don't know if this is reflecting a North American-bias, but I'd personally feel more comfortable dealing with the Canadian company. I definitely would pay more for simpler returns (and I agree with Peri about the time vs money thing), but I guess it also depends on what percentage of the original cost is the difference.

Easy return. I have only had one experience ordering overseas...Figleaves...and although it was supposed to be easy it wasn't really. It took a long time and there was something about customs might or might not catch it, and if they did I would have to pay extra but I wouldn't know until it happened, etc. Not worth the hassle!

On top of that, I like to be able to easily reach customer service if something goes wrong, and I wouldn't find it all that easy to be calling Belgium I don't think.

But, I am one who thinks time and peace of mind is as valuable as money, so that's my bias. Others may think it is worth spending time and trouble to save money.

I would probably go with the cheaper option, since I hate paying more than I have to. In some cases, I just don't buy things when I'm faced with the possibility of trivial returns that require payment, but I think I'm a bit strange there. On the other hand, it does seem like it'd be hard to make that return window. 5 days is a pretty short time! Another question is how likely do you think you'd be to return them?

I believe European retailers HATE returns and really dislike having to offer that as an easy option. I think the US and Canada are much more customer-is-always-right. If you are fairly certain you will keep the shoes then the Belgian option is ok, but if you are only 50-50 on them then I'd go with the Canadian option.

I think over the past 6 months I have only purchased from retailers with easy returns (free return shipping, labels included inside plus a reasonable return window). After a while I simply stopped visiting those sites with a less convenient return, I don't even look anymore.

I think I would go with the Canadian site. 14 days to return, while scary!, is more doable than 5 days to return. Plus, with your busy schedule, 5 days to return becomes twice as scary!

Also, I would be leery of ordering from a site that is not based in the US or Canada, strictly due to customer service issues. If the pickup service is complicated and you miss the pickup by 1 day, will they still credit you?

If you already know the Belgian site fairly well and they are known to have good customer service, then maybe you are safe with them.

I've passed up cheaper options on Amazon simply because Zappos/Nordstrom have better/easier return policies. I'm too busy/lazy/forgetful that I need a generous return policy, always. But a $50 price difference (including the shipping cost) is nothing to sneeze at. It's a tough one.

I'm looking at a pair of shoes. The Canadian site has them for about $80 more, but shipping to the US is free and I can return via USPS, my cost. Have 14 days to return.
The Belgium says shipping is between $18 and $31, I think the shoes will be heavy so the higher end of the scale. The shoes there about $80 cheaper. Returns they say are are free via a pick up service that seems complicated. Have five days to return.
