We had a few reminders earlier in the year about needing to be prepared for earthquakes in Wellington, plus of course we had the big one in Christchurch a few years ago.

We based our family and personal survival packs on these bags - http://grabandgo.co.nz/

To heat water we keep our gas BBQ bottle full.

I think 1 gal per person per day is the usual guideline. At least 3 days worth to be safe if you have the room, we keep some on hand but usually plan to use camping filtration if we run beyond out stockpile.

Like Mo, I think I have whatever's in the Brita and maybe a couple of refilled bottles lying around. Maybe a partial jug of distilled that we use for things like the iron. I do have a lot of bottled beer and wine, does that count? ;)

You'd think I would know better. I grew up in SoCal with the earthquake stash. But in my defense I live in a non-earthquakey urban area now, and I've never had my power go out for more than maybe 6 hours. This reminds me though, I realized the other day that we don't actually have a flashlight that works. Haha, we have been using our phones/ipads in lieu of a flashlight.

I do have a pilot-lit gas stove (but even if it was an electric starter, you can light them with a match) though so I can still heat water and cook when there's no electricity.

I've stocked canned goods and some water at home, but haven't figured out and sourced a way to heat water yet. Sometimes a cup of hot tea makes everything else feel less dramatic.

What bf does/has at his place is sort of none of my business, but I'm there a lot so should at least pull my own weight in preparedness.

AmyK, now that you mention it, I am not very well prepared at all! When I wa in my house we had a ton of canned food and dry goods on hand, plus a propane barbecue with an extra propane tank. But now that I am on my own in an apartment, I realize my stockpile is pretty much nonexistent. In fact, I gave almost the whole contents of my pantry to the Christmas food drive last week!

Must remedy the situation! Thanks for the reminder!

Oh, and also? I live in walking distance of work, but when I didn't, I had an earthquake stash at work, too, including comfortable clothes and shoes.

I'd have to go out and use the propane grill here to heat up a pot of water I suppose. At home in Tahoe, I'd have to do the same over the gas fireplace(s). AEK in both places.

Power was out for less than an hour, but it meant his lair night was off (interrupted movie he was watching upstairs) so we got to chat about longer outages.

Besides plenty of water, what's your method to heat some for tea/coffee?

My mom also does the water for earthquakes thing. She's a native of LA also. I have whatever's in my Brita pitcher and usually six 24 oz bottles that we refill from the pitcher for our daily use. I never seem to be in one house or the other long enough to make a stock of things. Here, if there's a hurricane warning, we grab extra water ASAP.

We keep three days supply of water in case of earthquakes. We also have a supply in the car and in a backpack in case we have to leave our house after an earthquake.

Too weird: the power in bf's building just went out. Seems to be just his building.

MaryK, what else do you prepare/stock in case of earthquakes?

The risk here is earthquakes! I generally keep 4 five-gallon bottles on hand. One on the dispenser and three in the coat closet! ;) I use it for drinking and cooking and it's delivered every two weeks. I usually go through about one bottle every two weeks so I feel like I have a nice big supply on hand.

... do you have stored in case of power outage or pipes freezing or whatever the risk is in your area?

How do you store it, and how often do you refresh the supply?

Every so often, bf's building turns off the water for 4-6 hours, usually with a week's warning. In my neighborhood, the power has gone out for long hours. No big deal, just enough that I've noticed I could be better prepared for a storm or other unplanned event.
