April in the UK can be absolutely gorgeous. Daffodils and lambs!

You will not need a wool coat. I'd only take the puffer if it is a thin, short one, that can be layered. You will absolutely need a rain coat, which could be layered with the puffer if it's cold, and can also be worn as a windbreaker. If your puffer is long or warm, take a good fleece instead. Hat and gloves are also a good idea. Waterproof footwear.

Once you have this sorted, layers of all weights... you may want short sleeves, long sleeves, a couple of warmer sweaters. I'd also take some light hiking type pants that dry quickly. But when I go to the UK, I do a LOT of walking and hiking, and don't let the weather stop me.

Be EXTRA SUPER SURE that your footwear will be comfortable walking for many hours. If you are not used to walking a lot, my advice is to go for some very long walks before you travel, to avoid ending up with shin splints.

I personally travel much lighter than you plan to, and for Britain the most important thing is to bring a thoroughly waterproof rain jacket. When I was going to be travelling through Poland and Lithuania with loads of rain forecast and only hand luggage (and hand-held at that), I finally researched lightweight but waterproof rain jackets and the one I bought, and highly recommend, is the Marmot Essence. It is unbelievably light, and kept me dry and warm in extreme rain. (Admittedly it isn't a LONG jacket, but still it worked for me.) That over a couple of layers of tops/merino under-tops/jumpers works well enough for me almost never to take a big heavy coat with me when I travel in Europe.

A friend of mine coming to England from USA found that the one thing she had failed to take into account was the rain. She had brought lots of jumpers and a big coat, but the coat was not waterproof and she got drenched and said she has never felt so cold in her life -- not because the temperature was low (it wasn't), but because she was drenched. Staying dry and dressing in layers will keep you warm.

I wouldn't bring loads of stuff with you -- you can always buy stuff here. For cheap stuff go to Primark.

Have an amazing time!

I'd say wait till nearer the time as our weather can be hit and miss. But if you're over here for 3 weeks then you never know, you might hit lucky and see one of our rare spring days.

I do feel your pain though, I am off to NYC in May and I want to start packing my suitcase.

A lot of folks here advise packing "from the shoes up" -- so my first question is whether you have picked out your most comfortable, walkable footwear for sightseeing, and made sure your pants all work well with those shoes. For spring in a rainy place, I would want at least two pairs of shoes suitable for all-day wear, so you can leave one in your room to air out and dry each day.

Do you have any pieces from your work wardrobe than can crossover into your casual travel attire? That might save you some room in the suitcase. For me, 5 sweaters would be overkill -- I'd probably bring a light one and a heavy one, and bring more baselayers to put underneath them (nice thing about synthetic, silk, or merino baselayers, they're easy to hand-wash and air-dry in a hotel bathroom). I'd also swap out at least one pair of the jeans for something lighter and faster-drying -- lightweight hiking pants, track pants, whatever your version of sporty/athleisure might be. Or something like ponte pants? Or leggings and a dress? I dunno, denim is just so miserable when it's wet. I know some people here are happy traveling in jeans, but I tend to avoid them when I'm living out of a bag.

It's definitely cool and damp in the UK in spring and early summer, as others have said. I was in Scotland many years ago in early June and ended up wearing a light long sleeved T, a light wool sweater, a light fleece jacket, and a long unlined hooded raincoat almost every day. I had thought I would mix and match but I needed all of them and on a few days I wished I had had another warm top layer.

I used only carry-on for a three week trip to England and Scotland in April. Including travel outfits, I had four pairs of pants (dressier hiking pants), 22 tees, one pair of shoes, one rain coat, one long fleece jacket, and one short fleece jacket. Some days I wore all three jackets.

Oh, and judging from my experience in the UK, it can be chilly and damp well into early summer, so I’d definitely take a rain coat and/or umbrella. Tops that layer will be a good idea. I think I’d leave heavy knits at home but I warm up quickly. Just keep in mind that temps that sound not so cold can feel colder when you add that dampness factor in.

I just got home from three weeks in Europe and I had a similarly sized capsule — 4 pairs of jeans/pants (plus the ones I wore on the plane, which I rotated along with the others), 7 tops that worked alone or with layers in a range of casual to a bit more dressy, and enough socks and underwear to go a week between laundering (I just do those in the bathroom sink with a little bottle of laundry soap and hang to dry). I took only a long puffer and a light leather jacket — no wool coat. Didn’t miss the coat really.

I got tired of those tops by the end of the trip, but it worked out fine. I maybe could have included one or two more. As it turned out, I bought two long sleeve tops in our last city, so I wore those for my final two days of the trip. I also took a few scarves and a selection of jewelry to keep from getting too bored with the basic core of my capsule.

What’s your footwear plan? I took three pairs along with the boots I wore on the plane (which are easy and quick to zip on/off). I wore the most comfortable walking pair the most, but it was great to have some others to take the constant wear off of the one pair — I changed into slightly dressier heeled boots for evening.

I would check what the weather is going to be like before leaving. You might not need the puffer if your wool coat is warm. I would only take 2 pairs of jeans. Also, I would add a couple of tops because of the laundry issue. You can always rinse out tops in a sink.
I travel for 6 weeks with 2 pairs of jeans but that is me.

I would be tempted to add a couple more tops, if you don’t think you will be able to get to a laundromat. I always think tops need start to feel like they need a wash sooner than bottoms. And tops have more of a visual impact in your holiday photos because they are near your face. I would sacrifice 1 pair of jeans if necessary.

Generally, it sounds like you have a good plan. I must admit, however, that I am worried that 3 tops as a first layer for 14 days will not be enough if you don't do any laundry. Personally, I know I would get sweat, so I would like to bring a few more tops.

In April, you'll probably not need a long and heavy puffer coat, but a light puffer jacket will be fine. Remember good walking shoes (consider using a protective spray one of the days before packing) and an umbrella.

Be prepared for cooler nights than at home, so bring warm and comfortable nightwear. Items like loose pants, a long tee and a light cardigan/wrap can be used as both nightwear, loungewear and even streetwear, depending on the styling.

You may get lots of opportunities to buy umbrellas as well as beautiful British knitwear.

Best wishes for an interesting trip.

I think this sounds fine-and not too little. There are lots of laundromats so that is an option too. April is spring which could mean anything but you may not need puffer coats daily. Sounds exciting though!

Hi all, I am wanting to tap into your wisdom! I travel a lot, but not usually for more than a week or so, and generally within Australia where I know what to expect from the climate.
But I am heading off to the UK and Ireland for just over three weeks in April, and I am getting quite muddled with quantities. I have about 7 days of work wear, so I am fine with that.
The rest of the time will be travelling etc, so let's say 14 days of casual, plus 2 x 24 hour flights. I won't have any real access to washing.
For the flights I was thinking of Angie's suggestion and having one dedicated outfit.
Then, I need to deal with the 14 casual days - which might be a stretch as I live in a really warm climate, so I actually don't have stacks of cool weather choices! I do have a good wool coat, a puffer, and a rain coat, so they will all be going. Everything pretty much matches, so that's one thing I don't need to worry about.
For the 14 casual days, do you think it would work to take:
3 x jeans
4 x lightish jumpers (all I own!)
1 slightly heavier cashmere jumper
3 tops that can be worn under the jumpers
1 or 2 tops that can be worn alone (in case it is warmer in London, though probably not by my sub-tropical standards!)
Scarves, gloves and hat.
Will this be enough/too much?!??
