My husband thinks I have too many coats (he has only a very few), but I disagree. I, too, live in a four-season climate where, for six months of serious cold, my outerwear has to be about function at least as much as about style.

Right now I have:

Spring/Fall
navy blue knee-length trench coat
olive green Levi’s field jacket (LOVE)
light blue denim jacket/hooded sweatshirt combo
white denim jacket (LOVE)
casual navy blue rain coat

Winter
black knee-length hooded puffer coat
cobalt plaid hip-length Pendleton coat forwhen it’s not bitterly cold
black/grey wool reversible poncho
red artsy wool hip-length coat, also not warm enough for bitter colds

I wear my black puffer seven days a week most weeks from December through April, and I plan to add a second puffer coat this year so I have an option besides black. I want something in a color that will be cheering during overcast days, perhaps a shade of red.

I would also consider adding a knee-length wool coat in a pretty color, but the second puffer is a higher priority.

This is quite an educational and interesting thread. I’m almost astounded that a few people have more coats than I do! (But I think my husband has even more.)

For coldest weather:
Blue fabric “career” parka, or car coat, suburban coat (not sure of the official name)
Gray wool hooded zippered coat, the dressy option

For spring chills and rain, usually chosen as part of the outfit:
Camel trench, lower thigh length
Olive nylon utility jacket
Several windbreakers, lined and unlined, most without hoods- turquoise, pink, navy, black, charcoal camo

For fall frosty days, cozy enough with layers of sweater, scarf and/or vest until very cold days:
Denim jacket
Red fleece jacket
Cherry red corduroy double-breasted pea coat
Orange fleece jacket
Dark green wide wale corduroy blazer (this one may be on its way to donation bag)
Gray corduroy denim-style jacket

Gear/running:
About 8 light/layering fleece pullovers and zip-ups
About 6 soft-shell zip-ups, a couple with hoods

I find the need for so many gear and running jackets is due to wanting lots of color options to match, as well as laundry requirements because these often are washed and line dried after every wearing.

This does not include my many vests, because I use them as layers but not often as the only “coat.”

I’ve actually pared down my coat closet quite a bit in the last couple seasons due to realizing that I had kept several coats and jackets for too many years that still looked nice but I just wasn’t wearing any more.

I didn't count mine, as I refuse to come clean on it :)

Still, it's regularly -5F here in the winter, and gets into the 90s regularly in the summer. In my defense, i have a lot of temperatures to span!

I seem to have a large collection of coats. I am prepared for heavy snow and torrential rain. I have running gear and light weight jackets. I have coats for dressy occasions and casual as well. I have down parkas for shoveling snow and for heading to work. Wool for fall. Leather because I like the look. Field Jackets. Long and short trenches. I’m looking to replace my long trench coat. Jackets for ski and snowshoe, and hiking, etc. Do vests count? All told, I have the following:

Field jackets: 3 total, one very lightweight grey linen for summer, one medium weight royal blue for spring, and one in a grey green for fall

Down puffers: 10 total TNF hooded lightweight down short jacket for hiking, and snow shoe, acts like a sweater. (Silver)
Two longer TNF lightweight down parkas, stadium length for walking outside in fall (grey and coral)
Medium TNF down short jacket, no hood (brown)
Medium TNF stadium length jacket (brown)
Heavy TNF down short jacket (brown)
Heavy Canada Goose long down parka (grey)
Heavy Eddie Bauer long down parka (red)
Heavy Creenstone long puffy parka (silver/grey)

Vests: 2 Total, down filled, from Athleta (red and white)

Thin cloth winter coats: 1 long Creenstone -dark brownish green
Wool Coats: 4 Total, one J Crew mint green cocoon coat, one J crew emerald green stadium coat with hood, one Cole Haan, dressy 3/4 length coat brown, no hood, one brown plaid poncho with fur collar.

Trenches: 6 total 1 TNF rain trench with zip out lining 3/4 length
One London Fog long trench, also with removable lining for warmth
Three Stadium length Creenstone trenches, one Citron, one grey, one taupe, one Helly Henson raincoat light teal

Wind jackets: 5 total, three Athleta, one EMS, one Lululemon

That brings the grand total to: 31

Ha ha! I forgot my leather and suede jackets!

Add 8

Total 39

Oops, polar fleece
Add 3 more

Total = 42

Now I’m done.

Okay, I have more jackets than I can wear every day in a month......hmm, I’m not even embarrassed. I live in a four season climate, and I wear all of them, so I don’t feel bad about having all of these at all.

I have no need for true winter coats, so please ladies, enjoy my quota! I've had a trench similar to the one below with a zip out lining and hood in collar for years and years, but rarely wear it. Last year I got the ultra lightweight coat below and wore it fairly often. I have quite a few jackets and other types of toppers, however. I am generally moving around outside but more sedentary inside and we keep our house fairly cold.

If I had to wait around outside for public transportation or engaged in bird watching, my needs (and purchases!!!) would be different.

It is unimaginable to wear a coat here from around May until around November, and unimaginable not wear an indoor jacket the rest of the time because not everything is well heated and I get chilly easily (weirdly combined with hot flashes but that is another story). Anyway, I have at least 5 coats in active winter rotation, and most of them are light wool and vintage. But my most worn is a lightweight puffer (like Uniqlo's), because the winter can be rainy.

Like Style Fan, I tend to divide coats by weather. For most seasons I feel that I need 2. I demote older coats but tend to keep them for times they may get damaged...grandkids. For very cold weather I have a calf length old black puffer and newer white thigh length puffer. For slightly warmer days or mostly car travel I have my olive hip length jacket from last year's NAS and a consignment JCrew blush wool stadium coat. For chilly days I have black, white, and brown leather jackets and an assortment of trench coats in blue, black, metallic dark grey, pink and taupey tan. They vary in length. 2 short puffer jackets, 2 rain coats in black and white. These are also travel coats and border on utility coat look. I probably have too many chilly day coats but wear them all a lot. Holes might be a dressy coat and bright winter coat. I often layer coats like a puffy jacket under a trench, so get some warmth with color that way.

Runcarla, torontogirl and others, the native SamI people here in Scandinavia actually counts 8 seasons! They split each of the well-known 4 seasons into a colder part and a warmer part. Not a bad idea.

I have probably too many cloth coats, but I like options when making an outfit for going out. I have 5. Then there are the fuzzy ones two. Two faux shearling. Then there are the Puffies... one ultra long, two thigh length, one waist length, one glam, one transformable quilted one...

Not included are jackets...

Then I have cold but not wet coats,
After this I have a cold weather aviator jacket and a black wool funeral coat.I also have 2 Barbour jackets.
The rest of my outer wear tends to be lightweight summer jackets, denim and the like.

Carla, I think your season count is slightly off - I am sure we have at least 6 seasons, don't you think?!?!? ;)

Your coat number sounds pretty good! I have only one puffer, which is too few as I am ready to burn it by the end of winter. I have one dressy wool coat (knee length), a pea coat, and a rain coat. I am missing something suitable for that weather when it's not fall, but not quite full winter, where you need something a little more substantial, but not a puffer.

I walk around in the rain. (Figures, right?) If LaPed hadn't thought up that fabulous moniker, I'd have to steal it from her. Or maybe I should change Suz to Shoooooooes.

Anyway...my trenches are rain resistant and without hoods, but I often carry an umbrella when I am wearing those.

The J. Crew waxed cotton utility coat is surprisingly effective. I got caught in a complete downpour in Vancouver wearing that thing and although on the outside it looked thoroughly soaked, inside I was not at all wet. I probably need to retreat it soon. Barbour sells the wax and there are instructions on line.

I feel like it is a very casual option, though. Not "gear" but pretty close to it. The trenches are dressier.

Interesting thread. My outerwear collection comprises:

2 puffies: 1 thigh length charcoal, 1 hip length forest green.

3 Wool: 1 calf length pink, one thigh length tan, one thigh length black/cream two tone.

1 raincoat (stylish, not gear): Black thigh length

I feel like this covers my needs nicely. This winter I added the green puffer as I was so bored of wearing the charcoal puffer all winter. Our winters get down to a minimum day time temp of about 5 degrees Celsius, but that’s only a couple of days a year. no snow. Usually in winter it’s about 15 Celsius. So I don’t need a true intense winter coat thankfully.

La Ped, I noticed others mentioned needing a dressier coat for rain too. As a side note, I don't think of my trench coat as a raincoat although it may be water-resistant. I like it for milder weather. You are right about the raincoats being gear like. I guess most people don't walk around in the rain unless they are doing gear things.

I am on the hunt for a more 'fashion-y' coat for rainy days too. A hood would be great. And it would be really great if the coat had some shape to it!

FashIntern, I guess my thinking with rain jackets is that a lot of us seem to have gear jackets, or casual jackets made of gear materials (Gore Tex or similar), that we wear around town when it's raining. It seems like once you get into true insulated winter coats, most folks (at least in climates with a true winter) have more of a range of options between dressy, smart-casual and gear-casual -- but not so much with rain jackets. Maybe because we perceive the season for them as short? Or we assume that if you're doing something that merits a "dressy" coat you probably aren't going to be standing around in the rain for very long? I would definitely like a waterproof coat that's a bit more "fashion-y" but also more durable than waterproof-breathable laminates -- perhaps a waxed cotton coat, Barbour or similar. I like the idea of a true waxed coat that you can re-waterproof when the coating wears off.

I see a lot of trench coats on people's lists but I'm skeptical of trenches because they largely lack hoods and are usually advertised as water-resistant rather than waterproof, so unless you also carry an umbrella they're not much good for real rain.

I don't think many of you would say my climate was four seasons - but it kind of is (lows of -2C to highs of 33C) - both being rare. So I do need both extremes of clothing but not many of each.

I currently have:

Mid thigh length:
- two wool coats (one peacock/jade, one cream and grey plaid) - one vintage, one on it's third season
- one faux fur (caramel) - vintage

Hip length:
- One purple puffer
- one coral ski jacket (both North Face)

One turquoise Marmot raincoat.

I would like to get an additional puffer jacket as mine is looking tired and ideally a shower proof lightweight dressy coat for spring and autumn and mild winter days. I don't particularly want a trench coat as I don't like belted coats much on me...so quite what it would be is very vague.

I often wear beanies and scarves and gloves to layer up - and leather jackets, blazers are good items that can be worn about 9 months of the year.

RUNCARLA- thank you for this post. I love seeing other people’s take on outerwear. I sometimes wonder if I have too much -but only because I hold onto the old ones even after I have bought replacements.
I have :
Raincoats/trench-2 -car length ( short)- black (7 years old) and light blue which I just bought this spring to replace the black one- which I still have.
Car coat- 1 gray - 4 years old- replaced one I had for 10 years- the old one sits in my car trunk for “emergency”. So I guess it’s 2 ;-)
Long winter hooded lands end stadium coat ( my shoveling snow coat purchased in 1999)
Short cold weather fleece lined- 2 - new teal bought this past December replaces ( sort of) an old ratty one that was an emergency purchase on a summer- yes summer! Alaskan cruise in 2001- I keep this old one to do our winter walks in.
My mother’s black vintage alpaca lined dress coat that she brought with her from Canada when she married my dad in 1950 ( posted pic in a YLF oldies challenge ) I can not part with it.
1 Light /summer weight jacket for kicking around / outside chores purchased at hospital thrift shop.

I do have blazers , shawls and vests but I consider these toppers for outfits and not outerwear ( I am usually cold)

like SarahD8 and Lynn, i'm a coat minimalist despite living in the frigid north. if it's cold enough to wear a coat, i'm in:

1) lands end black puffer (super bargain at $50)--4 years and counting
2) TNF giant puffer with a fur hood (didn't survive the cleaning after a raucous new year 2018)

i have cloth winter coats which i consider fashion and not for warmth
1) funnel neck burberry
2) old cashmere coat with a fur collar
3) at least 4-5 others that i haven't worn in at least 5 years but hang on to (ready for the purge)

for spring/fall
1) short burberry technical fabric trench with a lining which i do not like
2) br light tan trench which is now too small and no longer weather proof

did not include gear like marmot rain jacket (with matching pants!), assorted down puffies a la rachy (layering pieces). essentially, i have one coat between me and the elements.

Hum- I guess I am a coat minimalist. I live in a 4 season climate and currently have:
- Black lightweight and heavy weight down coats (Eddie Bauer)
- Bronze color raincoat
- Black heavy weight sweater coat (new as of last fall)
- Olive utility jacket for spring (just bought)
- Ski jacket with zip out fleece liner.- purple jacket, grey fleece
- Black waterproof midweight gear jacket, actually a hoodie (Columbia)

That's it. It worked for years but I have a good short-term tolerance for cold and would just walk fast from my car to my office then I didn't leave my office for 10-12 hours. So mostly I didn't bother with a coat except in the winter. Now that I am retired I would like to expand this capsule a bit as I am out and about more in the elements.

La Ped, two of the coats I recently jettisoned were rain coats. One of them was a bright coral/salmon-colored trench coat, I think by London Fog. The other was a putty-colored Woolrich raincoat with a flannel lining.Idk if I'll need something for rain other than the blue jacket I mentioned, but I have had one of those longer than I've had my son, and the other was just a year or two younger than him. I don't recall wearing either of them.I don't recall this as any more of a hole in my wardrobe than the absence of judogi (I don't do judo).

My coats and jackets take up about a 1/4 (maybe a bit more) of my closet. We have all 4 seasons where I am and start wearing my jackets/coats starting in late September through late April and possibly May. I have one knee length wool dress coat, 3 raincoats (1 unlined and 2 lined), long puffer coat for the really cold weather, Obermeyer ski jacket (this was a great find at Maine's Kittery Trading Post in 2017), leather jacket, lighter weight puffer from Lands End, military jacket (unlined), and a few fleece jackets and some windbreakers.

We live in a three season climate: winter, summer and fall. Spring is fleeting. I have a lot of outerwear. I think this list is pretty comprehensive.
