I adore reviews, but like most others, I take them with a grain of salt.

I've ordered items with no reviews, but I'll admit it makes me a little leery. I wonder, do I just have bad taste if NO ONE else out there has ordered this item or cares enough about it to review it?

I've also NOT ordered a product because more than one reviewer has said the items snags or pills easily or something like that. If multiple reviewers comment that something fits too snugly in the hips or thighs I KNOW it's not going to fit me well.

I realize I should write more reviews myself too just to be more helpful when I find something I like or dislike.

I love customer reviews. I think every website should have them.

I particularly like reviews where the reviewer specifies their height, weight, body shape & why the garment doesn't work for them &/or posts a pic.

Vague reviews just annoy me so I endeavour to post useful ones myself.

If something doesn't have any reviews I tend to add it to my wishlist until somebody reviews it for me.

Yes, very much so. I don't go by the star ratings but by the descriptive assessment. I agree that some people just love everything and have marked everything a 5 or there is someone where nothing is good enough. I was read a review where the product got one star from someone because the reviewer didn't find the packaging "luxurious" enough.

I find them helpful and they have some degree of influence, but I take them with a grain of salt. Generally, I have found highly rated items to be great. Interestingly, the animal print dress I posted that is getting very mixed reviews on YLF is a 5-star item at Nordstrom.

Thanks for all the responses...I agree with what you all are saying. I, too, tend to dismiss reviews that seem overly negative (like Elly said, maybe written under the influence?!) or completely out of line with the other opinions for the same item.

And I just thought of another reason I depend on reviews: There's SO much merchandise out there, reviews can be really helpful in narrowing your choices.

(I love those Anthro photos, too, Una!)

It depends. I rely on them a lot for shoes, because I have fussy feet and also like to do the bulk of my shoe shopping online. You do have to read them, of course, since as has been mentioned above, the ones that talk about how they don't like the color or style or whatever are not very useful. However, I do find them really useful when figuring out things like whether the toe box will be wide enough, the heel narrow enough, calf width, that kind of thing. It does also help, of course, that Zappos tends to have like 8 million reviews for many of their shoes, so I think you get a pretty good idea of how good/comfy something is. And honestly, there are so many shoe options available that I sometimes need to winnow them down by some criteria anyway.

For clothing, fit and stuff is a lot more subjective and I tend to find the reviews less helpful, although I do still read them and they can be helpful. Lots of consistently bad reviews might make me rethink purchasing something, but one or two poor reviews probably won't change my mind unless they are specifically referring to something that I know would be an issue for me.

To be honest, I find the reviews I get here at YLF to be the most helpful! Probably because I can ask specific questions like "how wide is the calf on a size 8?" and if someone has it, she will probably go and measure hers for me, since everyone here is so nice and helpful. =) Also seeing things styled in such fab ways here does definitely influence me to buy things too!

I like reviews. Many times what someone complains about is to my favor. Like a garment being small in the shoulders...yes, that would be in my favor. Also, what Laurinda said regarding electronics, I WILL pay attention.

Yes, I'm with taylor. I look at reviews as consumer research. If there are several reviews complaining about the same thing, then I pay attention. Also, if I have a specific question about the item that isn't in the product info sometimes the reviews will reveal more info that is useful...but again, I am always careful about relying 100% on other's opinions

A lot. There's one of the ways I avoid impulse shopping - if something gets bad reviews for quality or durability or something like that, it's an easy out. And when people post photos on Anthropologie I find that very helpful.

But if the reviews are bad for a reason that doesn't bother me (shoes too wide, not enough waist definition), I will still give an item a try if it's something I love.

Reviews on clothing fit or fabric/construction quirks are very helpful - as long as they give details and not just an opinion - so much is subjective that I am not that swayed by negative opinions without facts. (OTOH I will only look at electronics with LOTS of favorable reviews).

I use reviews sometimes for information, but do not rely solely upon them.

On fit - shoes running small or large, for example or quality - shrinking after washing, inferior fabrics, etc.

For me, reviews are strictly a nice-to-have. If I'm considering an item and I see reviews for it I'll most certainly read them and maybe even pay attention, but by and large I rely far more on you guys for the information I need. I will feel a little more confident in my purchase, however, if I'm buying something with universally positive feedback. Sometimes reviews are surprisingly helpful. E.G. The trench I ordered today is listed as navy, but the reviews made it clear that the colour is more of a royal blue. This actually tipped the balance in favour of the purchase rather than against. That kind of info that I can't see for myself is very valuable...it just doesn't usually crop up in a review.

What Queen Mum said mostly. I do avoid buying if there are bad reviews (for reasons other than they didn't like the color or the item was damaged etc...) I' ve ignored them once or twice and found them to have been pretty accurate. Sizing reviews have gone both ways for me.

I find that they have too much influence on me. Like you, I will sometimes not even consider an item if it does not have reviews. And occasionally, when I get something that I am not 100% sure about, I will go back online and read the reviews to find out whether anyone else has noticed similar issues with an item. On the other hand, they really help with size selection (knowing if something runs small etc.).

I am also guilty of spending too much time on Amazon reading reviews of books that I have already read...

As a big online shopper, I am a fan of online customer reviews like the ones featured by Nordstrom (and many other online sites). I've found them very helpful for fit and color advice....but I'm starting to wonder if I allow them to guide my purchases too much. I tend to search based on "customer reviews" now, sometimes ignoring those items that don't have reviews and dismissing those that have bad reviews.

How about you? How much do customer reviews affect the way you shop online?
