Hmm, these may be a bit too gappy. Unfortunately they are an eBay thing, so I can't try them on. But they do have buttons down the side so there may be some possibility of adjustment.

Thanks for your advice all!

This depends entirely on the boot and where it gapes. In some cases half an inch is still too much. In other cases several inches of gaping is okay.

I asked this question recently, and I think the response was that 1/2 inch is the max desired gap.

I think it's more of a visual than purely measurement based. Also, it depends on how fitted the boot is elsewhere. Cowboy boots have gap because of how straight up and down they fit. Ditto with slouchy boot styles. Boots fitted at the ankle and lower leg will look odd if they gap up top. This is my understanding of the issue. FWIW, I have never found boots to fit my less than 12 1/2" calves but if I get close enough I'm okay with it.

This is a continuing source of confusion for me, too, Mander. I think a little gap is ok if you're wearing jeans/pants tucked in but not ok if you're planning to wear the boots with a dress/skirt.

I've found the only way to really tell for sure is to try them on. Measurements are sometimes inaccurate.

I saw this really cool pair of boots on my favorite boutique, eBay. The measurement around the top is about an inch larger than my actual leg. Do you think that's likely to cause annoying "boot flap"? It's hard for me to visualize with just the tape measure.

I have yet to try the skinnies+boots combo, but I suppose a gap like that would leave plenty of room for that look, as well as any thick socks in cold weather.
