To me, it's not important that my accessories match each other. Bag and shoes, for example, may be in two different neutrals. However, when wearing an accessory in a non-neutral I usually match it to something else, preferably an item near my face.

Historically I haven't been very matchy-matchy, but within the last few months, I have felt drawn more to it, especially matching shoes to bag. Like you, I'm not a bag lady, so this would require some doing!

I do like to have my shoes match some other part of my outfit. They can match my purse or my belt or some other accessory, like a scarf. I am also getting creative in my pennilessness and have decided that I will also use nail polish and lipstick as possible matches. In your case, with a red bag, maybe you could match it to red nails or a red hat or red lipstick?

@Stylefan, cognac would be the color I would pick for you too! :-)

@UmLilla, I use an internal pouch also. It makes switching bags easier, and it preserves the insides of my bags from ink. I always carry two pens, blue and black because I have to sign so many documents. Even with electronic records!

I rarely match bag and shoes -- that's why I was dissatisfied with the original lavender and white outfit I posted last weekend. I do carefully consider how a bag works with an overall look and change them out accordingly (I have that pouch method going so mostly all I have to do is transfer my clare v pouch from one bag to another.)

I actually *do* plan complements and careful matches of bags and shoes.....for some reason it isn't as well-done for summer as it should be. Maybe it's the overall casual ness of the summer season .....

I have been looking for the perfect white bag for years and still haven't found one I like and can afford.

With me, it's a hodgepodge and mostly I don't mind that. I have one bag, and carry it daily regardless of outfit or shoe or whatever. I just don't have the patience to change my bag out. Because there's so much gack in there that I consider to be indispensable to my daily life, changing out bags is a real pain.
Usually, my bag is black or brown; but my latest one is navy blue. Every once in a blue moon, I wonder if I shouldn't have stuck to black or brown but I'm not replacing it over that.

Hah, Ledonna, that's awesome! I don't intentionally match my clothes to DS's but since I'm the one who does the shopping, his clothes do look suspiciously similar to mine (today we're both wearing breton tops). Actually, we do have some matching Uniqlo graphic tees...

Cocolion and Aurore, it sounds like you, like Angie, have the matchy gene! (I'd love to find some lavender shoes this year, but not inspired to add much of anything else in that colour -- guess I'm not that matchy!)

Staysfit -- thank you for the review of the Puzzle Bag. I will keep dreaming, and perhaps someday saving up.

Sal, Jussie, and Jenni -- it seems like NZ/Australia is not much of a "bag culture" the way you sometimes see in the US. That said, my mother only ever owns one bag at a time, and my grandmother used to switch between a "summer bag" (light colour) and "winter bag" (dark colour), which she usually picked up at the thrift store where she volunteered. So I was somewhat shocked as a young adult to learn that some people collect bags! I'd always thought of them in a very utilitarian light.

Lisa p, I think building complements makes perfect sense for your style; it's a strategy that adds polish and intentionality. You operate within a pretty strict colour palette, which I think makes it easier to build the colour-capsules you really want, not just a bunch of wildcard ones. I tend to be happy with a thrown-together look most days -- my RATE coming through. :)

Haha, Binkle -- I view my own wardrobe as a total hodgepodge, despite not being a spontaneous or impulsive shopper at all!

Katerina -- the way you use colour in your outfits always amazes me. I think you have an intuitive sense of how to combine colours for maximum effect.

Liesbeth -- it's interesting you mention jarring and tonal combos. I have a really hard time enjoying tonal combinations. If I can't get an exact match, I go for high-contrast instead.

DonnaF -- I love the idea of red and yellow accessories together, and can totally see it working for you. Suggests a very quirky gamine/Zooey Deschanel kind of vibe.

Thanks, all, for your comments! I had a feeling there would be quite a wide spectrum of responses.

Ah, matching outfits really takes me back. My older sisters are identical twins and I am 5 years younger and basically look the same. As a young child Mum loved to dress us in matching outfits, I was the mini me to the twins. Of course I loved it, being the same as the big girls, they were less impressed!

That's lovely Ledonna! I used to match the 2 girls to each other. Not to me so much. But in about 2001 we all 3 had the same summer black jandals with a hole for the big toe and a silver daisy on the hole I quite enjoyed that.

But I know now me and my daughter do mommy and me looks that are matching matching I try to keep them coordinated but not exactly matching matching. I know one day you're going to look back at this and say oh my why did you do that to me. But I'm addicted.

For me it starts with the shoes and if the shoes are in a new-to-me color, I MUST find a bag to go with it. Or two (as in, a small bag and a large bag). Then I might get a second pair of shoes in that color, for even more mix-and-match potential. So far my bag-shoe sets are in burgundy, black, camel, olive green and cobalt. My newest set is lilac -- I have a lilac bag, causal sandals and heeled sandals for spring.

Dressing is so much easier when your shoes and bag match and I feel instantly more put together even if it's a casual outfit.

I sometimes match bag and footwear - but am happy to mix it up. I probably would not match a silver bag to silver shoes - but I do find camel and brown footwear and bags look good matching. It is an easy way to pull a look together.

I could up my bag game though - it is not a big part of my style.

Sometimes I get these "aha" moments on the forum - and thanks to this thread, I had another one ! The unused or orphan bags and or footwear I own have that status precisely because I don't have a complement of other pieces to wear with them. Duh. I have 2 lovely pair of brown boots I never wear, ever, because I don't have a brown bag or any other brown pieces for that matter. A burgundy bag went unused for a long time until I finally found a pair of burgundy boots with matching hardware. I have a couple of pairs of grey booties that aren't getting worn either - because ...no bag. Clearly this matching business matters more than I realized...but only makes sense because I think having footwear and bag selected to work together finishes a look and makes it look intentional, instead of looking like you just picked 8 items to wear and threw them on together Anyways, I need to make sure my summer shoe collection has the right handbags to work with them.....which it currently doesn't.

Cross posted with Jussie who is like me preferring to match a colour in the outfit with the shoes.
I'm also like Staysfit in preferring not to mix metals, though having bought my mixed metal watch late last year has helped me do it and look cohesive. Inspecting my tan handbag it has only a tiny amount of gold hardware, barely obvious, so I don't mind mixing it with the odd bit of silver. I prefer to wear gold anyway but being grey now I can wear either.

Well I call myself Mrs Matchy-matchy! But it's not between bag and shoes. It's between OUTFIT and shoes ( shouting for emphasis!) That's partly why I want shoes in *all* the colours. In summer especially having bright colours in the outfit and some sandals in one of those colours is really important. I'm lazy with my handbags, emphatically not a bag girl. My current tan/cognac handbag was bought October 2016 as I was on a bit of a 70s jag in 2015/16 and it matched a number of new clothing purchases from those years. I've worn it almost every day since ( 500 + wears?) and was happy all last winter that it looked good with black, grey, rust, pink and cobalt. I do also have a cobalt bag from 2015 and may occasionally swap out for that one if I can be bothered, as have several cobalt winter items including a favourite tunic and boots. My previous handbag before the tan one was my first ever grey one and I wore that daily until it wore out, prior to that they have been black for decades. I own two lovely red ones that were gifts one from Mum and one from my sister so they get occasional use if there is lots of red in the outfit. I don't use them as a pop of colour if no other red, for some reason that's not matchy enough for me?
I was like you in that I had dark hair ( before it started greying in my 40s) and so I think black bags suited me, and that first grey one was probably bought in my early 50s. Not deliberately to go with my hair, more just a little tired of black after at least 2 decades. I notice that my 24 and 27 y old daughters don't wear black bags, one has a blue one and one a grey/white contrast.

I have shoes in various colours and neutrals. However I only carry one bag- a mid-grey leather hobo. It seems to work with the vast majority of outfits.
I do like to have my outfit tied together somehow though- like, today I have some orange in my blouse print and orange shoes.
I am not against matching a bag with shoes, it’s just that bags are where I try not to spend much, as I’d prefer to put that $ towards clothing instead.
I like the sound of Joys pewter bag, that would be a handy colour to go with everything :).

Team spontaneous but hopefully not hodgepodge - that doesn't have such a good connotation to me :-)
I think and hope that by being a bit disciplined about how I buy, things will work together without matching. Don't know if I succeed!

I do not match my handbag to my footwear, or my accessories to one another, but I do like them to coordinate and look nice with each other. For example, I typically will not mix gold hardware and silver hardware unless I have some other mixed metal items in my accessories such s a mixed metal watch band. I also don’t mix warm tones with cool tones very often.

I have a medium sized Puzzle bag, it’s a light navy, and it works with just bout everything. Maybe it works with everything. I love it, and have used it almost everyday unless I am traveling. It’s heavy. It’s made from thick, leather. Anyone considering Puzzle bags, should save up and then splurge.

I am somewhat matchy matchy; I like to wear my cognac/luggage bag with the same colored shoes OR with my red shoes. I thought I needed a red bag to go with my red shoes but most bags I have seen seem too LOUD. I bought a red belt (which I have not worn) and a number of red scarves which I have, so maybe I will give up on the red bag. For whatever reason, I can better imagine myself carrying a yellow bag. Go figure. But yellow will blend in more with my skin.

I have a navy and black leopard print scarf that I wear when I wear navy and black together. I would also try a scarf with both blue and black if I wear navy and black. My house is so dark that it took me two or three years before I discovered that I had a navy plaid shirt and not a black plaid one. Oops.

I like handbags and have quite many in different colours. I am not as fond of shoes (strangely) so I don’t have as many. Now, I clearly have some wardrobe wholes - need some colourful oxfords and sandals. I usually use scarves to match and echo colours. Sometimes I wear matching bags and shoes, I am pretty matchy I guess, but don’t have particular shopping complement building strategy - I am more of a spontaneous shopper.

Like many others, I have some personal intuitions about matching - but I don’t adhere to the idea that bag and shoes must be the exact same color, nor am I always actively matching (my work bag remains the same throughout the entire season ss / fw). I generally like bag and shoes to exude the same vibe (polished or more casual). I would wear a colored bag with neutral shoes and vice versa. For both to be neutral, I do prefer matchy-matchy and wear usually black leather in winter, and shades of tan to beige in summer, smooth leather of suede. THis year I’d like to both acquire a bag - shoe complement in a darker tan or cognac, AND get more used to combining different shades of tan in my accessories. I’ve noticed that I like tonal or even slightly jarring combinations of the same neutral (different shade) on others and doing this would increase my outfit options as I already own a variety of beige, taupe and tan shoes and bags.

I love matchy-matchy elements and think it adds harmony and classiness. I often try to include complementing items in my outfits (don't always succeed though).

Greyscale those are great points. It is *really* hard to use a matchy complement in a monochrome outfit, because that second colour becomes the focal point -- can be a little too loud/overt. There is something magical about three colours in an outfit. Sort of the opposite of "two's company, three's a crowd" you know?

Your grey suede heels make me laugh -- I have been there and back again with both grey footwear and suede footwear. Both are super tricky for me and often don't produce the intended effect.

I have the same aversion matching style signifiers -- hadn't even thought about that -- for example I won't wear a breton top with sailor pants; I don't like feeling too literal, or like I'm in a costume.
