I have quite a few coats.
Winter

Black mid calf length puffer coat (for the coldest, snowy-est days)

Black hip length wool coat (for most winter days)

Camel knee length wool coat (to alternate with the black wool one)

Brown waist length puffer (a gear piece)

I also owned a yellow knee length wool coat that I retired at the end of last year due to holes. I'm currently searching for a colored replacement coat.

Fall

Blush leather jacket (my warmest leather jacket)

Brown suede jacket (a great fall color but not very warm because it is unlined)

Black knee length rain jacket (made to repel the rain)

Camel fake-leather jacket (about as warm as the brown suede one)

Black nylon jacket (a gear piece)

I'm in NoVA so your climate. I own a ridiculous amount of coats. Like Angie (and others I see) I love coats!
I have:
Black below knee puffer with faux fur hood - removable(for really cold - work or casual)
Grey below knee puffer (same, but no hood)
Red puffer with hood - for snow play
White pea coat (below)
Black pea coat (probably out this year with white replacement)
Long wool overcoat dark brown (many years old, but still going strong)
long wool navy overcoat (new purchase)
several mid weight lined trenchcoats: Boden Caramel color, Kenneth Cole Black
DKNY Hooded coat (Below)
Khaki hooded parka
Vintage coats for evening wear: purple velvet, red velvet, black velvet cape, black cashmere bracelet length sleeves
Long faux fur leopard print coat
Faux fur ivory coat (car length)
2 vests: white, black in lightweight down
So to answer your question do you have enough coats? I think NOT. I'll be interested in seeing your coral. I see from my list I am missing something colorful (I chose the white pea coat this year instead of a color but will be watching end of season sales)

I live in a mild climate and almost never wear dresses so I really have no need for a winter coat beyond my trench with a zip-out lining that rarely gets worn due to a three year drought. I have a few outerwear jackets but a lot of jackets suitable for indoors plus an EF serape/poncho thingy I can throw on top. What does this mean? Y'all are free to buy and wear my share of winter coats without guilt!!!

I'm so glad you ordered a coral coat! I really like to coordinate my outerwear with my outfit, so I have many coats. I find the one I'm reaching for most often these days is a beautiful plum felt number with a large shawl collar. The color just makes me happy, and many of my outfits these days seem to be very neutral (maternity). So I vote COLORFUL coats, all the way!

I currently own 3 for our winters: a grey knee length puffer, a red knee length wool blend, and an ink/ black colourblock pea coat.

This is not enough coats for our long winter -- I live in Eastern Ontario and it can last for 6 months. I get around mostly on foot, so need coats that offer real warmth.

I am a HUGE fan of a bright coloured coat, especially if you tend to wear neutrals in winter or live in a dark place. If coral works well with your wardrobe, you will not be sorry about this purchase.

When I saw this thread, I had to go and count. I have 10, for all types of weather. The majority are Lands End simply for their lightweight warmth factor and fit. I also have a Gap trench, and 2 Izod fleece lined raincoats - perfect when I walk the dog in the rain and it takes her 3 times the amount of time to do her business.

My latest Lands End boiled wool coat arrived yesterday and a new fleece jacket.

Living in the Midwest, I have an embarrassing number of coats. without even counting jackets or lighter weight trenches. Indeed, I need to count again to keep them all straight, but off the top of my head I have:
Full length black coat
Full length red coat with black velvet collar
Mid length black robe coat
Red mid length
Ruffled deep pink mid length
Cobalt military mid length
Blue and black mid length
Hooded faux fur stadium length
Brown and black faux fur
Black lamb fur
Off-white stadium length puffer
Black shorter Navy Peacoat
Purple mid hip w/toggle buttons
Green stadium length with hood

That's all I can think of, but I'm pretty sure I'm missing a couple. And now that I consider the list, I may have to cull this collection soon!

Winter lasts a long time where I live. November to April. I have worn my puffer a few mornings this past week. So.....a good coat is needed. I am not counting fall and spring coats. A trench coat would not be warm enough in our winters.

1/ Olive green knee length puffer. This is way too big for me. I bought it about 5 years ago on sale. It was such a good price and I was desperate. It is minus one pocket. I left some dog treats in the pocket and my dog ate the treats and pocket. I should probably get it fixed soon.

2/ Brown bomber style down jacket. Looks good. I never wear it. Totally impractical for our winters. What about my lower half?

3/ Brown wool pea jacket. Love this jacket. It has been a workhorse.

4/ Cognac knee length wool reefer style coat. Beautiful coat that I bought in New York City. Unfortunately it is not very warm and it does not have side entry pockets.

5/ Brown faux fur knee length coat. Ancient but I like being fuzzy.

6/ Black faux sheepskin mid calf length coat. Looks great. Not very warm. I save it for going out.

I love coats. And jackets. Being in the mid-Atlantic, we get some cold weather, but not much "serious" cold.

winter coats:
- burgundy Laundry wool coat, knee length (several years old)
- black Trina Turk wool military coat, knee length (NAS last year)
- turquoise JCrew wool peacoat (last year)
- cream (with black tipped) JCrew wood peacoat (2 yrs ago)
- cream Banana Republic short (mid-thigh) wool coat (3 yrs ago, thrifted)
- dark purple sort of fleecy blend lightweight peacoat (quite a few years old, inexpensive, not frequently worn but comes in handy sometimes)
- cream wool very long coat that only gets worn for very dressy occasions (probably 8 or so years old)

lighter weight coats:
- teal Burberry trench (2 yrs old)
- red Anthro trench (2-3 yrs old, not frequently worn)
- cobalt blue Anne Klein trench (really old, never wear, but I keep just in case, I don't know why, because I only reach for the Burberry)

Everything else is jackets: from a short down puffer to a Helly Hansen oversized water-repellent jacket that I wear for rain gear or Arctic expeditions to leather motos and cotton bombers. I have a lot more jackets than coats, but I like jackets because it's easier to layer with them without getting overwarm.

I think that next year my burgundy coat might be due for replacing. I love my TT coat from last year, but sometimes I want to wear something other than black, and the burgundy and black are my only long everyday coats. I'm a big fan of having a colorful coat as a winter option -- I'm really happy with my turquoise coat from last year.

I am noticing now that I have a weirdly high number of cream coats. And a few that I'm really not very enthusiastic about. But coat shopping is hard! Getting a good fit is tough.

I'd like more coats, but I only have two right now.

a) a technical coat, Mountain Hardware, with a zip out liner

b) my red wool trench, about mid thigh

I live in Southern NH and spend a fair amount of time outside, although it is typically active time (hiking, walking, working, etc).

I use silk/wool underlayers for top and bottom from October through March but I homeschool and run a casual lifestyle. I have often found that I just need another layer on top of that, along with a heavier sweater/jacket/mitts/hat/boots depending on activity level.

I'd like to add a third coat this year, although it isn't a priority...yet.

i will be the first to say that i do not understand winter coats that are not puffers that are at least midthigh length. i also do not understand having more than one winter coat. for my winter "capsule" i have a lands end black thigh length puffer with a detachable hood. i want to add a navy puffer midcalf length. i have an ankle length cashmere coat with fur collar that i use for formal events--this is part of the formal events capsule, not the winter capsule.

i have several fall/spring coats that i alternate more

Oh gosh . . . since it is now below freezing when I'm coming to work in the morning I am ashamed to admit I own one, and therefore put off wearing it as long as possible and quit wearing it as soon as possible during the season.

It is a great, practical coat-- warm enough for most circumstances, dark colored, washable. That said, one coat plus several "indoor weight" and leather jackets don't cover all circumstances. However, coats are pricey and take up a lot of space when not in use and I'm terrified that one purchase will lead to many purchases.

I have a dear crush on a little jacket-length packable puffer a co-worker wears with aplomb.
I'd love a wool duffle coat, possibly a wool dress coat like a lady day, and a short, swingy wool coat.
AND a long puffer for those long cold days in January and February.

That said, that is a seasons' budget right there, and then I'd have nothing on under the coat!

Pink J Crew wool belted
light yellow J Crew majest pea coat
Burgundy J Crew lady coat
Black Tory Burch long straight coat with shearling collar
black Patagonia Tres parka (my major workhorse in deep winter)
And, added this year, Emerson Fry mixed media hooded gray coat with black leather look sleeves.

I have been tempted by some of the beautiful light color coats at Reiss this year, but for practical reasons if I were going to get anything else it should probably be a down parka / puffer since it would get more wear.

I live in central VA, so just south of you, Pree. I run warm though. I have only two coats:

a hip-length gold puffer

a mid-thigh grey softshell

a white trench

a leather jacket

But I guess only the first two are really winter coats.

I've been looking for a third - a wool coat, following Angie's rec - but I haven't found one yet. I like the look of that J Crew lady coat, but I was worried it would be way too warm for our winter.

And I'm impressed you're thinking about winter coats when it was in the 80s this afternoon!

Not enough! I have an old brown The North Face down puffer (metropolis). It's warm but not windproof and I'm no longer feeling the brown. I have a white puffer from LE that just covers the bum - it's good for in and out of the car.

Now that I'm on yard duty for up to 30 minutes twice a day (as a kindergarten teacher), I need something that's warm without layers. I bought this and I'm in love.

http://www.nobis.ca/F14/jackets/merideth.html (I got the grey wool blend)

One of my HEWIs is a knee-length wool coat in a gorgeous colour like dark pink.

Hmmm I love coats!
My winter coats (fall not included) are as follows:

Long Black Puffer - for seriously cold days and hockey arenas

Raspberry parka (pic 1)

Grey peacoat in wool/cashmere (this would be my fanciest coat)

SIlver puffer packaway jacket (new and replaced an old one almost identifcal) (pic 3)

Topshop navy duffle (just purchased and tags are still on due to indecision) (pic 2)

I vote yes to the cacoon coat! It has been on my list for 2 full years! We only just got a J Crew here so I may now have a chance to purchase it. I do love the coral but it is lots of colour so you have to feel comfy with that.

I love coats and I think if you live somewhere that gets cold winters it's worth having several options mine are as follows

1) Knee length black down filled puffer from Marmot, this is a gear brand but the 'puffer' quilting is on the inside and it's flat waterproof fabric on the outside. This coat seriously goes with everything
2) knee length red funnel neck I love this on dry cold grey days as it's so bright and happy
3) black calf length Bench coat
4) burgundy hip length puffer, totally gear but I've been known to wear it casually
5) faux fur thigh length duffle type coat

I live in a temperate climate with no snow. I own

gear
Ski jacket, two layers, one a shell and one down, coral and purple
Raincoat - turquoise.

Wool
brown tweed knee length coat-vintage
grey and white check car coat - vintage

other
Khaki and Black anorak/ parka - lined
Fur coat- vintage

I also have jackets of course.

My next purchase will be a dressy coat in either black or a colour that goes with black, to wear for smart day and going out at night ( we often walk). It may be expensive and is not needed all that often but I do feel the gap. I will buy something classic that will last me forever.

Oh! I am an outerwear addict. Luckily, I recently moved to the Great Lakes area of upstate NY, also known as the snow belt, so suddenly my winter coat collection is justified. They've been acquired over the years, as I've lived in different climates, although my most recent home of south Texas rarely required them.

All 6 of them are wool or wool/20% nylon blends. I run warm, tend to wear a lot of wool clothes in winter anyway, and so far have not needed a puffer (we'll see whether this new climate requires it). In order of warmth they are:

medium blue, below the knee, fit & flare vintage Loden wool coat w removable hood & cape (this is a furnace & I'm hopeful that it will be my puffer substitute)

light taupe/camel, below the knee, fit & flare vintage 100% wool coat w removable hood; navy blue, classic fit/shape, knee length wool/nylon Gap coat (bought in 2005 & still going strong)

light grey, mid-thigh, swing shape in a wool/nylon blend; cranberry red, mid-thigh, duffle coat in a wool/nylon blend

charcoal grey hip length peacoat in a wool/nylon blend

For less cold temps I have 5 more coats:

knee length trenches in a mid-camel & robin's egg blue, both with a belt for waist definition

hip length quilted navy peacoat

gear-ish navy raincoat

hiplength charcoal grey alpaca cape

And lots of jackets (I just counted: 16, including both warm & cool temperature ones).

What can I say? I love layering, am comfortable with having an extensive wardrobe, and acquire most of my items secondhand, thus making it easy from a personal budget & ethical perspective to amass quite a collection. I do feel this is sufficient though! Although if I come across the perfect teal jacket or coat at the right price, I'll snatch it up. ;)

I hope the coral coat works for you; I really like having colourful outerwear options as well as neutral ones. Like you, I spend most of my time at home, but I walk my pup 2-4 times a day, plus any errands I run are via walking or the bus. So my outerwear is all that a lot of people see!

Retailgirl- couldn't agree more
Sveta- I can attest to the warmth of the puffer in our polar vortex last winter
Viva- I agree that coats are a long term commitment and it is important to find the right one.

Update on my coat order from jcrew- the chocolate runs small- I sized up in the petite, but still snug if I want to wear a sweater and the next size up is not available in chocolate so I am thinking to order the the classic styled lady double cloth coat in the coral color. That way I have a warm, classic coat that adds a bit of brightness to the dreary cold days as suggested by almost all of you!
Thanks for helping me get sorted!

Ha, I am really surprised at how few I have, if we're being honest. I guess I keep all of my coats (all seasons) in the coat closet year round so it seems like I have a ton.

I do run warm, and I wear lots of wool under the coats. (I basically wear the same weights or lighter of coats in Boston as Angie does in Seattle, but she runs really cold.)
