Lately I've tried to follow a "one in, one out" rule when purchasing new pairs...</p> <p>I also live in a four season climate. Almost all of my shoes are low to mid heel (no more than 2.5 inches, unless there is a substantial platform) and generally on the chunky side. The exception are the fancy sitting shoes for special occasions (even those have lower heels, though) I'd say I have the most boots for sure and wear them the most as well (all seasons except summer). I have fewer sandals but do wear them a lot. Closed toe non-boot shoes like mary janes (I can't wear ballet flats - they won't stay on) and pumps are worn less for me because I pretty much can't wear closed toe shoes as 8-hour shoes w/o socks/tights, so I mostly wear them with pants+socks or skirt/dress+tights only. I have a couple of pairs of fashion sneakers that get worn on casual days, plus a couple of pairs of gear shoes (sneakers and hiking boots) for more athletic endeavors. </p> <p>Also, I wanted to comment on the ball of foot pain thing... I have a lot of problems with my feet, including getting pain in the balls of my feet from certain higher heels and, for some reason, even lower wedges. I started wearing a rigid half insole in the heel half of my shoes for support for my flat arches, and found that a pleasant side effect was that a lot of the ball of foot pain went away! I think it's because my arches were so flat and my insteps so low that my feet were basically sliding forward every time I walked, resulting in lots of rubbing at the ball of the foot. So, adding arch support actually keeps my foot from moving around as much in the front.
