What Tanya said...it depends on what one has. For fall/winter I was in pretty good shape. I felt that the following new purchases updated me to a level I was comfortable with:
SE python booties
White wool AT trousers sized up
A snake print clutch
Gap chunky knit sweater
A MK snake belt and CK silver belt
The clutch was a gift that I picked out. The belts were needed to be long enough to use on low rise pants and to hold them up.

I dunno, but 5-6 sounds low for me if trying to update and clear out some cobwebs. "Maybe next year"...! I could buy 5-6 items or more every month if you count every type of clothing category and it not be too much if they are all put to good use and some replace other items.

However, I think I am getting better at thinking in terms of seasonal and style refresher/updates, which overall should be fewer items but more intentional--not buying 4 or 5 new tops out of boredom because I'm not focused, or more of the same pants. So the number is less important than the plan. I bought fewer items this past quarter because I was shopping for ideas and buying for the plan (somewhat--not perfect!).

Quality is important and I know it's the key buzzword, but I've actually learned that the style of the shoe or garment is equally important . I had been buying some good quality (though not bespoke, or whatever) items with a relatively low style and happiness quotient. The 2 concepts overlap, of course.

This fall I bought a pencil skirt that I love and that goes with virtually everthing in my closet (well, not quite). Also re-surfaced one that looks good now with updated items. And I have a 3rd that is pretty good. So I'm trying to realize, okay, pencil skirts are great, but WEAR THESE every 2 weeks (or so, depending on work schedule) with different tops & shoes that look on point, make them earn their keep, for the next year, and don't go looking for the next new pencil skirt just to have more. So I also look for categories now I should "let rest" for the next few seasons or so, as more of same would not change my style or fun quotient. Later on I will need and want to replace them.

For spring, I know I would like a colourful bag in better quality than last year's. I also need a new footwear option -- probably an oxford, but I am unsure which one. I MAY also purchase a certain leather jacket, IF it goes on sale.

And that will be it. Unless I find a perfect pair of jeans.

For summer, I need to make more purchases. Almost none of my current summer clothes fit terribly well with my style goals. I just don't love them. So I will have to be buying (or at least trying) more items for a small summer capsule.

My big buying will be for next fall/ winter -- more items, for sure, since that is a longer period for me.

Well, for spring, I am sitting on two floral matching top and pants outfits, and am awaiting a pair of (eat my words!) metallic oxfords. These 5 items are my whole update plan.

I did purchase some all-year basics as well, tho: 3 tee-shirt tunics and a neon spring green faux leather backpack.

Just skimming - I'm thinking so far, on average, maybe people are doing 5-6 individual items.

I am embarking on a 12 items for 12 months challenge this year partly to see if it's 'enough' to update and turn over my wardrobe. In reality, I think 12 items per season is more near the right amount for me, but it's a good exercise to start with just 12 for the year.
I have a couple geeky documents if that helps you see what I think I need/want to make my closet current and manageable both. The first is 12 for 12 that I'm trying this year and the second one is more likely what I'll use after this 12 x 12 is up. It's my current clothing amounts and replacement rates if I go for 12 per season.
EDIT: I should add that I'd likely purge more than I'd buy in the second chart so my replacement rates would be a bit sooner than the 8 years listed

I recently started updating my clothes ready for the summer. I gave a lot of thought to what I will be doing this summer and realised that things had changed. I came to the conclusion that I needed some dressy outfits to wear dealing with clients at my new part time job. It will be very hot here so the new additions to my wardrobe need to be cool and comfy as well as dressy and suitable for all events. I live in Greece and you can suddenly find yourself being taken out to dinner or on a surprise boat trip.

I don't have much money as my budget is tight. I make all my wardrobe work as mix and match, one set for the summer and one for the winter. Spring and Autumn I go to layering till the weather settles to spring/autumn.

I buy at the ex catalogue shop, where interestingly the clothes are sold by weight...at 29 euros a kilo! I buy the lighter weight clothes there and the heavier ones at the Italian clothes shop sales rack. (I get Italian shoes dirt cheap!). I bought a red sleeveless shift dress, a black pinstripe blazer and a black and white viscose blouse to make a capsule with a white skirt, and white jeans and a fushia silk shirt I already had. (it cost me 30 euros for the new things)

I bought a white lace/cotton top, a blue cotton waterfall light jacket and a purple long silk shirt along with a ginger/flowered soft viscose jacket for 15 euros in total. They will make outfits with clothes I already have in my wardrobe and I have capsules for the summer and autumn months for just 45 euros spend so far.

The only thing I would like to add is a nice lightweight red skirt but there don't seem to be any around that I like at the moment. So I have put the money to one side for when I see one.

I love this site, I get so many good ideas from you all...so thank you very much xxxxx

Well, i am pretty much ok with my wardrobe now. I haven't shopped in a while and never on impulse. In september i realised that my bloused and knit tops were rather tight ( ouch) and worn ( double ouch ) so i tried to keep an open eye on this . Also for jean ( however i lost the weight before i could find a new pair of jeans ) . So i bought from september till now : a pair of red suede mary janes, 1 pair of low heeled sleek black boots ( maybe 2.5 inches) , one white and blue stripes button down , 2 black tops, one blush pink top , 2 black and white tops ( sweater and blouse), a pair of cigarette black pants . I wore the heck of them and felt they updated my whole look.
Also i lost my pink angora winter berrette and i replaced it with two white ones one angora ans slouchy one wool in a "newsboy style" .
Also i shopped a bit during my honeymoon but i guess that doesn't count ( i got a black stuctured vintage purse , red gloves, a dogtooth river island and a white wool coat from london )
So all in all 15 items for 6 autumn/winter months . I guess a 2.5 month . And that includes my London shopping which was induced by my very happy husband who was all "buy it, it's a honeymoon souvenir".
This may seems much but for me it's pretty ok for 6 months of autumn-winter. I did not buy any new thick sweaters ( i have two and they are plenty , it's very warm where i work, and i prefer thin top plus blazer plus winter coat formula). I did not buy any duplicate style boots. I slowed down with the dresses. I din't buy any new scarfs . I actually felt pretty good with myself till i counted them now

I will think than would depend on many factors, such as state and age of one's wardrobe, how on trends one wants to be and how many of the current trends you like.
This season I am planning to only add a few pieces, which for me means 5-6, as I am saving for a big non-clothing related item.

Vivienne Files does a great job of showing how a few new items can work a modern trend into a wardrobe. She has been going through the Pantone 2013 colors one by one, and as one example, see her post on Poppy Red. http://theviviennefiles.blogsp.....d-for.html

I think it really depends on the season. I don't update my winter clothes as often because they usually stay in decent shape (I have a lack of winter where I live). My summer clothes get updates more, but usually it's half updating and half replacing worn items.
