Last night we decided to go grab drinks and early dinner with our neighbors, before the winter storm arrived, and I pulled out my one remaining pair of skinny jeans thinking maybe I’d wear them with my tall boots. I put it all on and hated it, LOL. Maybe I really am over that style for good. Which would mean my tall boots are really only good for wearing with skirts and dresses? I have five pairs of tall boots and this is really making me question that collection.

The jeans that I currently wear are in finds. I have a collection of skinny jeans that I previously wore and loved but are languishing in my wardrobe and could be edited out. I am holding onto them in case skinny jeans cycle back and I want to wear them again.

I love jeans, but I rarely wear them in the coldest months of winter. I might wear jeans to a concert in January or February if we were parking really close to the event. I feel the cold more now than I ever did.
I like jeans that are 100% cotton. I never wore skinnies and don't expect ever to wear them. I prefer looser fits. All my jeans are high-rise.
I have seven pairs of jeans. My CofH get the most wear. I find they fit me the best and are the most comfortable.
I have two pairs of wide-legged CofH Annina blue denim, one pair of loose straight-legged CofH Annina black denim, one pair of CofH barrel-legged blue denim, two pairs of straight-legged Everlane blue denim, and one pair of Sailor Jesse Kamm dark blue denim.

I wear jeans on average probably close to 5 days a week and on weekends except during the summer when I swap them for denim cut offs - lol. I haven't added anything lately and there is nothing on my radar. Silhouttes vary from week to week - bootcut, barrels, straights, BF. I have one pair of wide legs too. Once I stop working, I think I'd definitely pair them down but for now, they fill a "need" for variation since all of my tops seem pretty much the same. All of this to say, I have too many pairs to count--even after doing a skinny jean purge last year.

Oh, that’s interesting about the barrel shape fabrication, Lisa. I think (at least for me) there is a balance. I agree that if they’re too fluid, then what’s the point — the shape is lost. But my Nili Lotan pants are lightweight but a twill that does hold the barrel shape. Somehow the Ruti felt too wide all the way from the hip down — like there was a ton of fabric around my lower thigh and knee, and it just seemed weird. I don’t exactly have skinny legs, quite the contrary, and it’s not how they look online. I kinda want to try the Nili Lotan version that the Ruti ones seem to be copying, but it’s a lot of $$ to shell out.

On a more general note, about jeans collections, I do notice that many of my pairs have lasted many years. I still have my Pilcro boyfriend jeans from, what, a decade ago?? They are mostly around-the-house wear now but still in really decent shape. I have bootcut AGs that still look new, and my Dojo bootcuts have been around a long time too.

I remembered too that I have a pair of a chambray-linen wide-leg pants that I guess qualify as jeans. They are summer only as they are lightweight and my weight was up a bit too much to wear them last summer. I’ve had those for easily a decade as well. Again, an Anthro item that has lasted well.

I have some jeans in my consign/clothing swap bags — a couple of AG skinnies, a pair of Rag & Bone wide legs that are just plain too big, my cropped Mothers and stupidly another pair from Mother that I ended up hating (note to self, don’t bother with Mother — they are so stretchy and high-waisted that they give me a stomach pooch that actually does not exist on my body!). There is also a pair of nice 7FAM that I must have bought on a skinny day several years ago — they constrict my waist whenever I try them on so they have to go. I have the same silhouette in other jeans so why hang onto them.

My favorite local boutique just had a denim sale, and I didn’t even bother looking because I know I am fully stocked!

I haven’t read through all the comments but I’m guessing I’m on the low end. I only have two pairs of jeans, both Citizens of Humanity, one is blue washed wide legged and one is the Guacho style in black. Both are 100% cotton denim, I can’t stand stretch in jeans. COH is on the spendy side, but well worth it and low cost per wear. They are truly the perfect jeans for me and all I need.

I can’t see wearing skinnies again either . They seemed fine 20 yrs ago but don’t feel right for the image I prefer to project . I also am not loving cropped pants other than the cropped flares o wore today . I may feel differently about them come summer but they aren’t feeling as refined as I want . My office has full length windows on 2 sides and I saw myself walking towards my reflection in the window the other day wearing slightly too short wide leg jeans and cringed . What we look like in motion is VERY different from how we see ourselves in the mirror .
Janet - your comment about preferring barrels in lighter weight fabrication is the opposite of my thought . I find that if the fabric is too fluid and lightweight the barrel has no real definition and the pant hangs oddly . I have a pair from Lululemon that are like this and it drives me nuts . I didn’t notice it until I walked around a lot and saw myself in motion .

I have about 20 pairs of jeans — a handful are in the holding zone. Some that I bought for a loose fit last year when my weight was a little higher are now so loose they are too baggy for my preference. Some like my skinny black moto jeans aren’t feeling right to me at the moment, but I’m hanging onto them just in case. The Finds below don’t show the entire collection, but it does represent the variety fairly well. I have multiples of each type — boyfriend, straight, bootcut/flare, and wide leg — but right now the flares and wide legs are my favorites.

I didn’t count my Zero + Maria Cornejo denim barrel-ish pants because even though they are denim, they don’t really read as “jeans” to me. I have recently tried the Ruti barrel jeans and one size was too short and the size up was way too baggy, so I don’t know what’s up with their sizing. I think I prefer the barrel style in pants with a lighter fabrication than jeans, so unless I stumble upon another that works for me, I’ll probably stick with that shape in pants other than jeans.

I wear jeans about 5 days a week, fall through spring. Summer is too hot and humid here for denim. I do have some baggy, ultralight jeans from Rag & Bone that are wearable in warm weather though.

I find that I collect multiples in each style because each has a different wash, rise, inseam, or other variable or detail that differentiates them. Do I *need* that many? Of course not. But I do enjoy the variety!

I do find that black jeans (other than those faded black/charcoal wide-leg Rag & Bone ones) have sort of dropped off my radar - I tend to just choose my black pants in other fabrications instead. And I’m really off cropped lengths too.

I love these replies! Everyone is so different in their needs. I feel a bit like an outlier in that I only leave my condo in the winter (other than to go to work obviously ) about 2x a week, so there is zero need for more than one pair. I sound like an old crabby hermit.

Anyways, Angie, YES, those are exactly the style I'd love to find . I have not looked yet, as shopping is such an effort now with limited local resources, and online shopping that is SO incredibly inefficient. For example, it took Banana Republic 10 days to refund my money AFTER they received my online return. Any recommendations for trouser jeans are most welcome.

Sal - I hear you re pricing on denim. It's like that here too - most of the better brands are quite outside my comfort zone for spending. There is a store just 2 minutes away that stocks a lot of Japanese denim, and brands like AG, Nudie, Mother etc, and I'd love to go in and try things on but I'm too intimidated . It's too much, psychologically.

I had a look at my tracking and I wore jeans about 90 times in 2025 so about 25% of the time. There will be days I have two outfits - eg just wearing denim at night.

This feels about right for me. Of my four options my highest worn pair was 38 wears and lowest was 8 wears. Those are the cropped levis ribcage which are my least comfortable, and I am not as into cropped denim at the moment.

I have 12 pairs of jeans, mostly high-rise and wide-leg styles. I do wear classic straight leg jeans and there is one pair of "baby bootcut" jeans in my collection. I tried balloon/barrel leg jeans, but they never felt right on me. Skinny leg jeans are a fringe trend that I'll enjoy on others. I shudder when I think about the low-rise skinny jeans I wore about 20 years ago.

My current denim collection is from 2024, when I bought new after a size change. 2 pairs of 501’s straight leg dark denim, one pair light wash American Eagle ‘paperbag waist’ jeans, and one pair of high waisted cropped/capri length light wash Jules jeans.

I really, really like the look of barrel leg jeans, but every time I try on a pair, they don’t look right on me. They look too cropped. Fact is, even my regular jeans look cropped, and the pair that are intended as cropped, look like capris. I close the gap with high shafted booties in winter, and show ankle once it’s warm enough.

So, to answer your question - classic denim on the bottom - and denim 60% of the time. I don’t ‘need’ more than the 4 pair I currently own.

Not shopping hard for denim at the moment, and into the cozy of my joggers and new corduroys this month. I find wide legged pants (denim or trousers) the hardest to style/wear.

I actually love how all the jeans look in that article Lisa!

I used to wear out my denim more quickly when I was at home with children and on and off the floor and at the park etc…. But now they last a lot longer.

I do agree with Angie that you can wear any style of jeans now - being totally honest the only style I think are out are tight skinnies with distressing. Which gives us freedom to pick what we like. The spanner is finding them - and here the prices are so so high. Brands like Mother or Paige are $500 plus. That’s a lot…..and that’s one of the reasons my collection is small. There are lots of more affordable options of course with Levi’s often being $150-$220 and mall offerings more like $70-$100 at the cheaper (Cotton on, Glassons etc).

Denim is a major part of my wardrobe. I can see how this article can be useful, especially for someone who wants to keep things fairly minimal. It gave me a chuckle, though, because I am so not the target audience. How many pairs of jeans do I really need? Well, need is such a loaded word. But my answer is a variety of washes, silhouettes, colors, shapes, lengths, vibes. The 23 in Finds are ones that are in my wardrobe. A few are on my radar for possibly editing out.

I’m down to 4 pairs of blue denim (Mother) 2 pairs of white denim (Gap), and one grey denim (Mother). The grey is a slim bootcut, and the others are straight, but one is a step-hem. This is probably the least amount of denim I’ve ever had. My weight has fluctuated dramatically the last few years, and my tolerance for anything uncomfortable is very low now. My feet are fussier too, so I’m not interested in getting new shoes every time the denim silhouettes change.

I guess these days I fall into the camp of statement/interesting top, boring bottoms.

I used to own 20+ pairs of denim and wore them year round in all seasons and owned all silhouettes. A blazer/jacket and jeans was one of my favorite year round work outfits, I'd simply swap fabrics for the blazer/jacket.

Since switching to WFH most days, I've been reaching more and more for softer fabrics and slip on or tie waistlines. My athleisure wardrobe has grown larger while my blazer/jackets/jeans has gotten smaller over time. Also I live in a warmer climate now and denim gets very little use once it's hot outside, my shorts collection has grown larger to compensate. :)

I recently did a closet edit and passed on my trendier and more colorful bottoms to make room for more athleisure style bottoms which are a better fit for my current lifestyle and preferences.

My current denim collection is down to 7 pairs across three styles: skinny, straight, bootcut.

White Paige Skinny - Acquired at a thrift store over the winter, really helps to brighten up winter outfits.

Dark Wash Bootcut Paige - For dressing up for dinner's with DH or to the office with a blazer.

Light Wash Bootcut Paige - For daily use on errands or anything outside of the house for spring/fall/winter.

Mid Wash AG Straight Leg - I have to cuff these to get a cropped effect and these are my go to jeans for the summer season.

Dark Wash Skinny Paige - My least worn jeans they are also my oldest pair. I typically pair them with knee high boots but our season is short to wear that outfit formula. I still enjoy it though.

Mid Wash Paige Straight Leg - I call these my gear jeans, they are used for hiking, horseback riding, etc activities.

Dark Wash Paige Straight Leg - Also a pair of gear jeans, to use when the mid wash pair are dirty.

Good luck with your jean wardrobe!

I have 6 pairs in regular rotation and 3 in the holding zone I think. I have good variety in my 6 - black relaxed straight, light relaxed straight, medium wash straight, medium wash bootcut, off-white wide, and indigo wash straight.

This spring I want to replace the indigo ones I have, that the hem is a bit ruined on, with indigo straight ones with the wide cuff.

I was just thinking that making sure my jeans are current is one the most impactful things I can do for my style overall and want to focus on it ... So I can't wait for Angie's trend report for 2026!

Jeans are a pillar of my wardrobe. I probably have about 15, but they range between 3 sizes because of my weight fluctuations. Most of the time I am only using 5 of them. I have barrels, some baggy distressed straights, girlfriend jeans, high waist flares, cropped flares, and classic high waist straights. I tried and tried to wear wide legged jeans because I adore the way they look on others, but they just don’t seem to work on my body type, so I’ve given those up.
My fave jeans right now are trendy ankle length dark wash loose straights with deep cuffs. So fun to see and hear about others’ collections!!

Some extra thoughts:

LJP, I've had my trouser jeans for 6 years - another pre-pandemic purchase. They are awesome - and are flares, not wide legs. They look extra neat and tidy. I highly recommend getting a similar pair! Although they were hard to find, you will have them for a while. They are my most quiet jeans, which I enjoy from time to time. I wear them long to the ground - not cropped like the model.

I think almost ALL jeans have longevity these days. The fact that I wear a large variety and keep my jeans for many years is proof of that :)

The only style I am not seeing is a low rise super skinny with stretch, and mention that in my post. That said, if people can make that work for their styles and feel fab - I vote go for it.

Trends will cease to exist at some point. That time is growing closer. It's began to happen already - with jeans.

LJP, I didn’t include in my count two faux jeans from rag & bone - one is lightweight lyocel and cotton sweatpants. They make sweatpants every season, I don’t know about others but mine look very casual and lack structure. I’m going to wear them as my traveling option. You might not find them versatile enough.

I’ve been thinking about how many pairs of jeans I “should” have and so am glad you started this thread. Your idea of having some select key cuts for longevity along with a few trendier jeans makes good sense.

I currently have 12, including two pairs I used to wear nonstop but have been off for a couple years: distressed grey jeans and the most expensive jeans I ever bought—light blue high waisted, wide leg jeans from 7 For All Mankind.

The others, all of which are in regular use, are a mix of mostly black and blue, a pair of white and of cream, wider and narrower leg styles, and a couple ankle length. Also a pair of light pink.

My size fluctuates enough that I don’t mind having duplicate jeans for that reason alone. Also, I like a few loose-fitting sized-up pairs to wear over long johns in the winter. I’m at 8 pairs plus 4 more in the holding zone.

Wide leg full length (light wash, light weight — these are warm weather jeans)

Barrel leg (very light wash — pretty cropped, so again more of a mild weather style)

Straight leg with front seam (one black, one blue — duplicated because they’re so flattering and comfortable and no longer available)

Slouchy straight-leg full length (one black, one blue — different styles, but both incredibly comfortable, the ones I reach for in the winter)

Slim tapered black and slim bootcut black — these are outliers in that they are much more tailored than my current preference. They look great but don’t feel fresh.

Holding zone is another pair of slim tapered black jeans that don’t fit quite as well as my other pair (was such a staple for years, but I’ve moved away from closely tailored styles for now), two pairs of vintage 501s that feel too low rise these days, and a pair of vintage bootcuts that also feel too low rise. I don’t really want to let go of the vintage pairs because they still fit and I suspect I’ll come back around to them someday.

12 wouldn’t seem like too much if it weren’t for the many non-denim options I have, which are honestly in heavier rotation than the jeans. At the same time, I’d love to add one or two pairs of dark rinse denim, which seems to be having a moment!

Jeans are a staple in my wardrobe, I'm a total denim gal. Only own maybe 4 other styles of pants other than jeans. I love the structure they provide my outfits but also the more relaxed vibe they offer too.

I'm sure I have 20+ pairs, some trendy and some traditional. Probably 60% traditional to 40% trendy split. My blue denims are usually in 3 different washes for each style. I also have many in black and various charcoal grey washes too. Only own one white denim jean though and one burgundy corduroy. I'd say my favorite washes are a medium blue denim and charcoal grey.

I usually fluctuate between wearing trendy jeans with traditional tops and vice versa but I have been known to sport an all classic too. Levi's tend to dominate my collection, but I have some Gap and Old Navy as well. There's a wide variety of styles that include wide legs, barrels, crop, boot cuts, straight, skinny and baggy, however none of the trendy silhouettes are ever an extreme version of their style. I'm essentially a classic dresser afterall.

As few as possible. For many years I found great cargo pants as an alternative. For the last couple of years, I have found cords readily available and stocked up on those. I have denim bootcuts, wide crops, skirts, culottes and long shorts. They are almost all in the neutrals I like, rather than blue.

Well some of your replies are expected : Suz, kkards, Angie. You are all early adopters of trends in denim, and I love watching it unfold. It took me quite a while to buy into the barrel leg look and I did not care for it at all when I first started seeing it.

The article, and thinking about it afterward, confirmed my thought that I prefer a quieter bottom with a more statement-y top. My denim edit will take this into consideration. One style I am interested in adding is a trouser jean . I've had them before and fit is really crucial if it's going to work. No pockets pulling or gaping etc. I am warming up to the Rag & Bone sweatpant jean but still consider the price too high for my needs. Plus I've never seen it in person , so there is that.

I love jeans but since I am a bit hard to fit they are not my trendy item. I don't really consider my colored jeans because I wear them like pants, for work and such, but I do have white, black, oatmeal and light gray. These are cropped because I have had them for a while, before I started wanting full length.

For my blue denim I currently wear a light wash flare, a mid wash straight leg and a straight leg crop. I would like a dark wash - maybe wide leg? I have a hard time with the wider fits because I size up to fit my waist and then the legs are super wide and on short-me that isn't usually a good look. The flares are surprisingly flattering and so comfortable. The mid wash are a bit too long and I have to cuff them - I am debating chopping them at the ankle because I am not a fan of cuffs on me. I also have some that are sloppy and comfy for around the house.

I didn't think I have many but when I list them out it seems like a lot!
