My jeans count increased after I started working in a casual office. Like Suz said, denim is a great mixer. That said. I'm trying to step up the style now by wearing non-denim "jeans" to work. NYDJ provides me with plenty of options. I have difficulty dressing too casually, and still wear dress pants to mix things up a bit. Also, I make sure my tops, shoes or boots, and jewelry are dressier so the overall look is smart casual. Lastly, my work clothes also get worn on weekends, so most of my wardrobe has a low CPW.

My advice to you is to have as many or as few jeans (maybe none) as your lifestyle, personality and storage space dictates.

I think Suz is right in saying our wardrobes ought to reflect our needs instead of some arbitrary formula. Honestly, if I had to, I could happily live in nothing but jeans, a few T's and sweaters, a pair or two of boots, and a couple of jackets. I rarely wear lounge clothes, don't particularly like leggings, and my skirts and dresses can hang for months on end in my closet. I have to remind myself to buy, and wear, pants other than jeans now that I am retired.

I think my predilection for jeans comes from an active lifestyle, an environment where EVERYONE wears jeans constantly, and a jeans-friendly IT shape. Skirts and dresses are much harder to fit, while a well-fitting jean is a no-brainer.

My current jean count, after a huge wardrobe purge due to a move, is around 8 pairs. The rest of my wardrobe consists of three dresses (one casual, two dressy), two skirts (one summer and one winter), a pair of shorts, a pair of cotton crops, and two pairs of dressy pants.

I'm another who makes do with just a few pairs. I wear jeans everyday, but I only have four pairs-straight (dark), skinny (dark, burgundy), boyfriend (light). Do they offer all the variety in the world? No, but four has always felt more than sufficient. In all fairness, I do have a few other old pairs lying around, but I rarely wear them.

Ann - my lifestyle sounds a lot like yours. I rarely wear jeans to work, and on work days, I generally come home and change into comfy lounge clothes. While I like wearing jeans, they are pretty much for weekends. I usually wear them 2-3 times before washing, depending on how much they stretch. I have three pairs at the moment and that feels like plenty: black skinny, dark blue straight leg, and dark blue bootcut.

I probably could get away with just two pairs, one black and one blue. Having a third pair feels like an indulgence given how often I end up wearing them. I only end up wearing jeans often over an extended period of time if I'm on vacation and not at work. That's when having the third pair helps.

Since you asked what we all have, I will list mine, but I think I 'need' more than you do since jeans are the mainstay of my wardrobe.

- six pairs of skinnies: medium blue wash, dark indigo wash, army green (not denim, but jeans cut), grey wash, solid black, and distressed blue wash (i.e. with small rips)

- three pairs of slim boyfriends (slouchy skinnies) that I wear rolled up: medium blue wash, dark indigo wash, light blue wash (in a lighter weight denim, for summer)

- four pairs of straight leg jeans: distressed grey wash with rolled hems (but even rolled up, they are full-length), two pairs of relaxed blue wash ones that I wear as scrubs, and one pair of dark indigo ones that I almost never wear because they stretch and slide down!

- one pair of bootcuts in a medium blue wash (which I rarely wear)

- two pairs of wide leg jeans: one very casual light wash pair, hemmed for flats (worn in the summer only, with flat sandals) and one 'trouser cut' in a darker wash, hemmed for heels (worn in the fall/winter/spring)

So, sixteen pairs. I feel like I 'need' them all except perhaps the indigo straight legs because they are made of some kind of crappy denim that stretches too much. I'm only holding onto them until I find a replacement, but I'm in no rush, because I'm wearing my skinnies and boyfriend skinnies far more often these days.

If I had to pare down my jeans to just a handful, I'd have two pairs of slouchy skinnies (one blue and one dark), a couple pairs of proper skinnies (but not sausage-casing tight!), and one pair of trouser cut jeans in a dark wash. Does that help? I'd also buy the best I could afford. My premium denim jeans are way nicer than my non-premium ones.

Lisa, Peri, StyleFan, Ann -- and anyone who doesn't have or want a lot of jeans -- that doesn't make you an oddball! We wear (or ought to wear) what works for our lifestyle, climate, and body type. So why wear jeans if those don't answer to your needs?

Also -- just so you know -- until YLF, I probably never owned more than 4 pair of jeans at any one time. I wore and re-wore the same ones again and again. Granted, I had at that time a VERY minimal (and unfashionable) closet. But also, I tended to wear skirts and even dresses more back then. I tended to wear non-jean trousers, too. I wasn't working from home. And jeans were not comfortable for me on the whole.

When those two factors changed (I started working from home; I found jeans that were more comfortable for me) so did my wardrobe. It's as simple as that.

For me, denim is relatively easy to fit. I typically need to hem the bottoms but that is easy peasy and for the rest, jeans don't present too many problems. Denim is also a super practical choice for a good portion of my year. I'm an artist and hang out with other artists, and artists tend to dress casually. I already gravitate to "dressier" (and/or more classic) clothes than most of my artist friends, who tend to vintage influenced, rocker chic, boho, arty, or, frankly, no style --- depending on age and artistic discipline. Denim is a great "mixer." It allows me to continue to wear the classic and dressier styles I prefer and still move comfortably among my peers.

If I'm wearing denim, my classic blazer can still look cool. A leather jacket can still look casual.

I think Janet has a similar situation, though her own style is more rocker than mine -- but I'd call her rocker luxe for sure, compared to many of my own crowd.

My problem is that even now I continue to buy skirts/ regular trousers -- and I have a much harder time wearing those in my casual work-from-home life!

If I had an office job, there is NO WAY I would own as many jeans as I do. In that case, I suspect I would keep my selection down to 5 or 6:

1 great skinny in denim
1 BF or slouchy skinny in denim
1 white or light jean
1 flare
1 patterned jean
1 legging jean (for winter tucking into tall boots)

I might even limit it further, to a BF and a skinny in blue and one white jean.

I know I have way too many jeans, especially because I never wear some of them. I used to think that everyone needed skinny and boot/flare, and then some darker washes. Recently I realized that only wear skinny jeans in a dark wash. So I guess what I'm saying is- it's better to have 1-2 pairs that are perfect for you and what you really like wearing than to have an assortment but you never wear most of them.

At the moment I have one pair I wear regularly, relaxed black skinnies. I also have one pair I would wear if the weather were right (bootcuts) and two pairs of straight legs I wear more or less only on days I'm staying at home. I also still have a pile of too big ones I haven't gotten rid of yet that I'm not really wearing. I would love another pair of slim jeans (relaxed skinnies) that isn't black! But I don't need many more. My life is casual, but I love to wear skirts so I don't need as many jeans. If the ones I have work with my shoes/tops and fit right I can get by with very few pairs. I prefer to have less pairs and wear them more often.

Ann - I'm kind of thankful I'm not the only one who can wear the same pair of jeans over and over again - and who has the same sort of relationship with them as you. I never change from work clothes into jeans - they just aren't as comfy for evening lounging as leggings or sweats. I'm really feeling like the odd ball on this forum with the amount of pieces of clothing, jeans, shoes, whatever that I have compared to what many others have. I really can't relate. I've probably never owned more than 4 or 5 pair of WEARABLE jeans at one time either.

UmmLila asked what I wore if I only had one pair of jeans.
I recently did a full closet clean out/edit and donated two pair, but I don't think I've ever owned more than 4 or 5 pair.

I don't mind wearing. The same pair of jeans two days on a row, and for work I wear dress pants. My typical day takes me from work to the gym to shower to bed, so I don't wear jeans much during the week, maybe just if I'm working from home one day.

I love jeans but compared to others my collection is very small. In the winter I only wear jeans when I am going out for dinner or to see a music event. For dog walking and daily wear I am in fleece leggings or dog walking pants (by Lululemon). Jeans are not warm enough for me.

In the summer jeans are usually too warm. Sometimes I can wear loose BF jeans but not very often.

My jean collection consists of:

Citizens of Humanity (CoH) dark wash straight legs

CoH dark wash boot cut

Silver BF very distressed faded very baggy

Fidelity relaxed skinny medium wash (a girlfriend style - sort of BF like)

Fidelity relaxed skinny destroyed --same as above but different wash

Fidelity skinny brown cord --sized up. No skinnies on me.

Seven bootcuts are hiding somewhere. I can't find them.

5 pr denim skinnies or slim straights. One pair is nearing demotion to ranch wear, so I may be in the market for a good replacement soon.
4 printed/patterned pairs (may not technically be jeans) - checked, houndstooth, plaid and damask print
2 pair waxed skinnies (not frequently worn, under evaluation)
2 boyfriend (1 distressed, 1 not)
2 tomboy (loose fit, non tapered leg, one dark wash, one light -- they function like loose bootcuts)
4 bootcut (including one that is only for grungy jobs) - an additional two are being evaluated, I may let them go because they bleed blue on me when I wear them. I could be in the market for a dark wash pair of bootcuts.
5 non-blue denim skinnies/straights: black, dark grey, mid grey, white, cream

And then there the non-jeans -- two pairs of moto pants and a pair of black ponte pants that function like jeans for me.

So, all in all, 24 pairs. Not bad considering I wear them every day and have a hard time finding styles that fit and flatter me.

Congrats on your finds, Ann. If budget, given what you've just spent, is an issue now, there are definitely some decent denim choices at a lower price point. Believe it or not I've had a lot of good denim from Old Navy. You just have to go try on all their fits and see which one(s) suit you, and be willing to try on multiple sizes to get the right one for each fit and your body. There have been a lot of other brand recommendations on the recent conversations about premium denim (and not just premium denim, alternatives to it).

Glad your appointment went well!

FWIW, I just noticed that your NYDJ Alina's have quite a bit of polyester in them, and a number of YLF members have commented in the past that polyester in jeans makes them itchy. Hopefully, this isn't the case with you.

Thank you, all. You've given me a lot of great ideas going forward.

My stylist appointment went OK, and I came home having spent my budget and then some. I was disappointed with the "jeans" part of it, though. The stylist brought me three brands: Paige, NYDJ, and Vince. And he seemed pretty sure that the skinnies I bought were the right style. I like them a lot (and they were on sale!) but I still don't know if they are work appropriate. I will have to scout out what styles of jeans others are wearing at the office.
Here are the jeans that I bought.
Vince "Dylan" Skinny Jeans
NYDJ "Alina" skinny jeans in black

The rest of the appointment was successful -- I got updated pants and some blouses. I fell in love with some shoes that i resisted. My 1 hour appointment ended up being 4.5, but I left successful.

I am overindulgent in the jean category as a stay at home mother...
I think that since you are starting at square one, you should try to have a few different silhouettes. I don't think you need to decide all at once what your total inventory need be. Reality is in bringing them home and trying them with what's in your closet and seeing what works. Have fun with it.

I wear jeans probably five or six times per week except in summer when it is probably closer to four or five times. This is just an estimate; I didn't go back to my WIW table where I actually track.

Wow. I have fifteen pairs:

White straight legs
White pull-on baby bootcuts (not a good choice for pears/hourglasses -- too hard to pull on since I had them taken in at the waist. Doh!)
Red straight legs
Wine straight legs
Black straight legs
Charcoal leopard straight legs
Charcoal corduroy straight legs
Charcoal bootcuts
Light gray nearly skinnies
Dark denim nearly skinnies
Dark denim bootcuts
Dark denim almost flares
Faded baby bootcuts
Faded straight legs
Faded boyfriends

And I'd like a pair of REALLY faded, really light straight legs/boyfriends for summer.

My black straight legs and charcoal leopard jeans are getting worn and probably should be replaced, although I am thinking of wearing slacks in place of the black jeans. I really like the barely detectable pattern on the leopard jeans so won't get rid of them until/unless I find something comparable.

I find BABY bootcuts a neither here nor there shape that never goes really well with my footwear though YMMV.

I don't wear any shade of blue denim jeans with my chambray or denim shirts, so that somewhat limits their wearability.

I like owning a mix of lightweight and heavy jeans; none of mine are premium denim. I live in a mild climate so I don't need to tuck jeans into tall boots. In addition, with our drought I haven't had to worry about wet, dragging bootcut hems.

I don't like wearing faded jeans for other than the most casual occasions, but that is me.

This is such and interesting thread I have 4 pair of jeans - I really don't like to wear jeans - For someone who goes weeks without wearing jeans not sure how I even have so many - Which is probably why the skinnies have needed replacement for about 6 weeks now and I haven't gotten around to it.

1. Black skinnies - Still wearable but in desperate need of replacement
2. White jeans
3. Boyfriend jeans
4. dressy jeans

Interesting reading.

I have five pairs

Black skinny jeans- winter wear, great for boots and layering
dark flares- need medium heel, good for work
blue straight - very versatile, I wear rolled and long
blue boyfriend- versatile, rolled, great in summer at night
coated straight - not favoured at the moment

in 2015 I hope to add a couple of pairs, one to replace my blue straight that will be relegated to gardening/ Saturday sport duties, and my coated jeans. for me 5-6 pairs is about right.

I am doing laundry daily so I don't often have bottlenecks. I do think length is crucial, it is great to have pairs that work with heels and with flats.

I have more than Suz but less than staysfit. seriously, I think I'm in the high teens or low 20s, including the cropped ones that I only wear in the warmer months. But I wear jeans probably 75% of my days and I like having different cuts and colors to choose from. There was a thread here in the past couple months discussing this very topic; I'll try to search for it and post the link. People really vary here based on their lifestyle and whether they like the vibe that jeans give or not.

I'd say that if you wear jeans 3-4 days a week, you need 4-5 pairs at minimum. All of this depends on your fit oreferences and what you're going to wear them with. But if I had to start from scratch with jeans, I'd start with a straight or bootcut pair in a dark wash, then a slim straight in a lighter wash (my equivalent of boyfriend jeans for wearing with tshirts, etc.). Then I'd add maybe a black pair, a colored pair of skinnies, a bootcut long enough to wear with heeled boots, and maybe a pair of trouser jeans for smart casual occasions.
Eta: here's the thread I was thinking of: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....s-too-many
But if you search 'how many jeans' on YLF you will get lots of results; it's a constant topic of discussion around here

I have

one pair of skinnies (Uniqlo high rise) - I rarely wear these (I find skinny pants in general difficult), but I keep them around for the occasional snow day or tunic/minidress

two pairs of bfs (Gap and Uniqlo) - I wear these a lot, mostly for working from home

two pairs of bootcuts (J Brand and Mavi) - I wear these a lot too, but not for work-from-home days because I like to go barefoot at home and I'd be stepping on the hems all the time

One pair of bootcuts is black; the others are all dark wash, although the Gap bfs have faded hugely over time.

This is the right number for me - I don't wear jeans to work or in summer.

I was down to one pair over a year ago, but added several pairs. I live in jeans during the week, but I tend to gravitate toward the same two pairs. Last year, I had bought high-rise skinnies, and this year I added a pair of boyfriend jeans. Nothing feels as comfortable as the two skinny jeans I own, though. They keep their shape well, unlike the BF jeans, and they're extremely versatile, especially when traveling. I thought I would wear the high-rise skinnies more often, but they don't work as well with half-tucks and boxy tops.
