I got rid of all ill-fitting bras and now I have three left. Two balconettes (plum and black) and one multiway (black).

And frankly, I can't even look at cheap H&M bras in ridiculous sizes. Any company that sells only 32-38 and A-DD should burn in hell. DIE.

2 ivory fabulously fitting 'post-Maya's thread' bras
1 flesh-coloured one on order in the same size

These are my every day ones. I have a couple of old ones I'm holding on to until my third bra arrives so that I can wash the nice ones by hand together.

One black strapless/multiway thing. No, it probably doesn't fit but I'll eventually replace with a well-fitting black one.

Not quite sure what 'sport' is, but if I ever find out and decide to take it up, I'll get one for that too

Well, Queenie, when I lived in Brazil and was young, beautiful, matching bras and undies made me feel glamorous when I went about my day. They really looked pretty, and knowing that made me feel good. My body was young and fit ~ to give you an idea, I wore "dental floss" bikinis like many other gals there ~ so the fit of undies was never an issue. But as I said, now that I'm older, not all undies look good on me nor are comfortable. So I also buy just a couple brands of undies and they don't match my bras anymore.

Fi, I guess a pair of undies is like a pair of pants?

I do have matching sets.

I have four bras which are everyday bras (wine, teal, black and white) and two more everyday bras for TTOM when I gain a cup size and tight bras would be torturous. I also have one black strapless bra.

If the undies that match the bra aren't of the comfy variety then normally I buy a pair in the similar basic colour. Plus, most bras that I buy have a choice of 3 or for styles of undies.

BTW - why do we say a pair of undies? We are only buying one item? Is it because they attempt to cover two cheeks?

okay, I just have to say it never occurred to me that anyone actually ever wore the matching bra and undie sets. I have one brand of undies that I love and I keep my drawer stocked in those. Then I choose my bra based on the top I'm wearing. I guess I'm just really not very underwear fashionable

This has been so helpful to hear what you all have and how you use them; it helps me better think through my own needs. Thank you!

Melissa, I probably have you beat in terms of number of ill-fitting and worn out bras. That undies drawer was a nightmare! I have a bunch of photos of my kids as toddlers each decked out in every single bra and undies I've had. I always thought it would be good for bribing purposes when they're teens (heh heh) but now I think they could use it to bribe me ("we'll show everyone mom's lumpy old bras and stretched out granny-like panties!!"). I'm sure you'll get there when you can. In the meantime, I love your focus on all those gorgeous boots.

Jenava, can't believe the saleslady told you to replace every 6 months. Glad none of us feels the need to follow that advice!

Tara, love the Band-Aid comment!

Vix, you're right that I should be hand washing ~ and I know Maya posted about that too. The lingerie dept. manager quizzed me on how I currently care for my bras while she rung me up. Since I am a lazy gal, I always machine wash them ~ but at least I use the "hand wash" setting on my machine (a step beyond the delicate setting) and I do air dry them. She let me off the hook on that but told me I should use a mesh bag with them, so I plan to dig my old one out.

Bianca, sounds like you had a fab fitting and found some great bras. I like the advice you got as well; sounds reasonable to me.

Fi, when I lived in Brazil, I used to buy matching sets of bras and undies. I was in my twenties then. Now that I'm older, I go for comfort and excellent fit over prettiness, and that usually means the tops and bottoms don't match since they're all different brands. Plus I care about VPL ~ I guess it's more an issue when you're older? ~ and lots of the matching undies are not great for avoiding VPL, at least in my experience.

I do have 4 sports bras because I cannot wear each more than once without washing; I perspire profusely. I never do laundry more than 2x / week (and even that is rare). And I never put bras in the dryer. So, when I'm in major workout mode (say, 6 x / week), I will wear 3 sports bras, then do a load of laundry but it still takes a day for them to air dry, so I wear my 4th on that day. : )

I have 14 bras besides those. One is strapless, a few are lacy - all are worn regularly and washed frequently. My absolute favourites are the Chantelle seamed bras, which make me feel like singing because they are so flattering and comfortable.

I guess I'm an outlier - I just counted, and it should be accurate since I just did laundry - I've got 12. (!) Some white, some black, most somewhere in-between; all wireless, a couple padded. One or two should probably be retired, but generally they're in decent shape. When I lost some weight a couple of years ago I went down a band size and replaced all of my existing ones, and have supplemented as I've found more that fit/were on sale.

My bras are so outrageously colored that it would be impossible to find undies that match perfectly, unless I buy the "set" which is expensive. Sorry, $40 on a pair of undies just makes me sick!

BTW, I want to thank you for not using the word "panties." It's right up there with "sexy" and "succulent" on my most hated words list. UGH. If you want to kill me, say "sexy succulent panties" to me.

I have more work out bras than everyday bras.

I own 4 everyday bras that I rotate through during the week:
2 nude bras, and one is going to be replaced from NAS
2 colored bras, and one of these is also going to be replaced from NAS

I have 8 workout bras, but in my defense, I run, lift weights and horseback ride, so I wear these quite often.

Small band sizes are not available for a variety of reasons:

-Women don't understand how bras fit
-Women like cheap, low quality bras
-The same reason small clothing is harder to find: There are more big people than little people in the US. Granted, rib cage size does not change no matter how big you get, but the amount of flesh around the ribcage frequently does. My mom would probably wear my size if she was not carrying so much weight on her top half (she is a 34).

Sparky, I'm in the same boat as you and just did this last week. I also went to Nordstrom's because of the great service and selection (I'm a hard to fit gal 32DDDD).
Anyway, I came home w/ 5 Fab new bras (3 beige, 1 black, 1 navy blue). I spent a few good dollars, but it needed to be done. I think if you know your true size you can add them accordingly so it won't be a lot of money up front. The new bra's have done wonders making me feel all womanly again! Also the woman at Nordstroms recommended around 5 because you need to let the bra's breath so the elastic doesn't become overstretched. Good luck!

I think 4 is the minimum, not including work-out needs. Everything else is bonus. I have given this hard thought, believe me, because my size is always changing, and my size does not come in cheap. Which, by the way, I don't understand because it seems like A LOT of us around here have a small rib cage, so why are smaller band sizes not mainstream available? Why? Maya, if you are ever thinking of going into business for yourself...

edit: one of those 4 is a multi-combi, strap-adjustable/strapless contraption. Two are nude and one is black.

I'm losing weight, so I'm on the low side, quantity-wise:

3 sports bras (I work out a lot)

2 everyday bras, seamed, one black, one nude
2 everyday bras, molded, one black, one nude

Sparky --

Since it's better for your bras to be hand-washed and air-dried, you can still blow off your laundry!

I recently got a better style of everyday bra so I have a few extra.

3 everyday, replaced ~ 6 months (1 skintone, 2 dark) + 2 of older style that I like less

3 fancier/embellished/"nighttime"

2 strapless/convertible (1 skintone, 1 dark)

3 sportbras (2 high-impact, 1 medium)

Just did a purge (i.e. tonight!). I have 5 bras that fit perfectly and I love:

1 x black with lace
2 x blue with lace (one cobalt blue, one ink blue)
1 x black strapless (super uncomfortable and needs replacing but it'll do for now)
1 x nude/mushroom w black satin

I have never purchased a flesh toned/"nude" bra, mainly because I think it looks like I'm wearing a giant band-aid round my boobs because I have really pale skin

I have about 8 every day bras: one black, two colored, and five flesh-colored.

I have 5 high quality sports bras; I work out a lot and definitely need them.

I don't have any strapless or otherwise "special" bras; I haven't had a need for one yet.

Oh dear, some of the posts here are going to give me an apoplexy...

I have 5 everyday (though I'm sure my colorful, lace, seamed bras are not considered "everyday" by most standards), 1 sports bra that is too big and is therefore relegated to lounge wear, and one proper lounge bra. My bras are very high quality and custom fitted, so I can get away with having fewer.

I did not address the question of how many bras you should have because it is so personal. I'd say at least 4 everyday bras. The rest depends on you. Since I don't wear skimpy straps or strapless garments, I don't need a strapless bra. I don't work out so a sports bra is of little use to me. But if you wear strappy and strapless tops and dresses more, or work out more, you might need more than I have.

I have a strapless, one cream, one beige, one dark brown (my black sub), one seameds pink lace. I also have one where the straps can be moved to accomodate a racerback shape, but it is too stretched out and I think I'm going to replace it with an actual racerback bra. Last time I bought bras the saleswoman said they should be replaced every six months! This seem a bit ridiculous to me, though.

P.S. I was down to just a beige and brown one for everyday until last week when I bought two more.
