Mine last a long time…at least 5 years, because I do not wear them very often. The popular brands do not fit me because the arch is in the wrong place. I like ECCO and off brands most, with the occasional New Balance,. Cons are wearable with added pads.

I second Janet! support in shoes is more of a day to day issue than we usually realize! With sneakers, I almost always purchase insole inserts right away, as I find it helps them last longer, fit better and, um, smell better, too!

I do not wear sneakers very often because the laces are a problem with wooden floors. Mine last at least 5 years or more. My most worn sneakers are Ecco silver #7’s. They are very light weight and comfortable…good travel shoes.

I think about the usage you describe it sounds fair to give them a year and then replace the insoles.

I usually don't track the usage of my sneakers, I have 4 pairs and wear them randomly so that would be too much detail for me to keep in an already busy and chaotic life hehhe,, but they last a few years each, right now, my oldest one is from 2016 so yeah, they do their job well.

I gotta admit I am a sucker for Chuck Taylor's converse sneakers, so all of mines are that brand.

I don’t wear fashion sneakers, mainly because of my high arch & high instep that make it hard to find some that don’t hurt my feet. My Brooks Ghost shoes are the ones I always wear, unless I’m hiking on a trail, where I switch to my hiking boots—one pair is New Balance high tops & the other is Orthofeet (highly recommended except in wet weather).

What Janet said! I wear through my sneakers and walking sandals quite quickly -- even with several pairs in rotation I need to replace them once a year, for sure. I walk a lot on pavement and gravel trails, upwards of 15,000 steps a day. That doesn't count actual hiking or running, for which I wear dedicated shoes.

Thanks. Sounds like my results are similar to a lot of people's. I used to wear a wider variety of shoes, each less often, and shoes would usually last 3-4 years for me. This year, wearing fewer pairs more often has really worn them out faster than I expected.

Suntiger and all, I learned when I was beginning to run and training for long events (half marathons) that when something starts hurting -- knee, hip, foot -- check your shoes. I was surprised how quickly my shoes wore because I was previously a non-runner and sneakers lasted me for years, not months. It's been an adjustment in my 40s and 50s to pay attention to the support of my shoes, and I think it gets more important as we age. Shoe wear does't always show in the treads -- support can definitely break down inside the shoe even when the outside still looks serviceable!

I do notice that now, since my ratio of running to walking is very different than it was (these days I'll run a mile or two but walk anywhere from 3 to 8 miles), and I'm on dirt trails more often than pavement or asphalt, my shoes do last a bit longer. I think the combination of harder surfaces, more impact from running, and my supination really made the uneven wear (on the outside edges of my shoes in particular) more pronounced more quickly.

I mention this because I think it applies to not just athletic wear but general use -- some of us are city walker types, others may be on their feet more but standing more. Supination and pronation can cause wear that is uneven and makes us more susceptible to discomfort or injury quicker. In my experience, if I think my shoes may be getting old, they almost always are!

(It doesn't help if you habitually get your shoes sopping wet like I do, hiking through shallow streams and slipping in muddy banks trying to take photos, LOL)

I wonder about this too. I’ve noticed foot pain after wearing my sneakers. And what’s the point of wearing sneakers that are not comfy or supportive?? Mine are about three or four years old and I do walk a lot.

I don't wear very many fashion sneaks, but the ones I do have last for a very long time, perhaps because I don't expect to have support from them, just comfort (some people cannot have one without the other, but the two are mutually exclusive for me).

Workout sneakers, on the other hand, often last only about a season or season and a half. I tend to have pronation issues that create uneven wear on the treads, and I can feel that after a while.

Most of my sneakers are Converse canvas, but I have some nylon and suede New Balance and Skechers. I don’t call them fashion, but more like athleisure. All of these are many years old, maybe 5-7? Some are worn once a week or more. And still looking good to me, and supportive as they’ve always been. Some I have added insoles for support or cushion to make them to my needs from the beginning.

(Running shoes- less than 300 miles or my hip starts to hurt and last time I got close to that mileage, progressed into injury. Worth the money to get new ones twice a year to me.)

You referred to non- workout sneakers specifically . I have many , and spread the wear throughout . No two pair or brands seem to react to wear the same , with some becoming less supportive and some just showing scratches ( metallics) or general signs of wear and tear . A few years/seasons seems the norm.

Staysfit, I think there can be a lot of variance depending on fit, fabrication, how much support a person demands from their shoes, and so on. I first heard the 500 miles stat while thru-hiking the AT. Most people doing it in trail runners go through 4 pairs, which works out to ~500 miles. (There are people who do it in leather boots and don't have to replace them as often, but they tend to deal with more blisters, infections, etc due to long drying times and lack of breathability...)

I've not been scientific about it, but it seems like solid leather sneakers like the Eccos last quite a bit longer than canvas, synthetic, or mixed-media styles. Leather can be cleaned and conditioned over and over. Knit uppers seem to have the shortest lifespan, and woven uppers, whether natural fiber or synthetic, are somewhere in between.

I get less mileage out of running sneakers than LaPed suggests as the typical guideline, more like 350 miles, but my fashion sneakers last a long time. I have a pair of Navy Ecco Soft 7’s that I’ve owned now for four years. I wear them at least twice a week...and they still look pristine. My Cole Haan grand pro sneaks wear out more quickly. They last about half that.

So, for actual running shoes, you can expect to get roughly 500 miles out of a pair. I always thought that number was a marketing gimmick to get you to buy shoes more often, but once I started paying attention I realized that is about when the tread disappears, uppers blow out, midsole gets compressed, etc.

You can kind of apply the same logic to fashion sneakers and try to figure out what kind of mileage your shoes are seeing each day -- totally lifestyle dependent. Are you in a car/behind a desk, or does your day involve a lot of standing/walking? The average I've seen is that most people in the US walk 1.5 - 2 miles per day (equivalent to 3000 - 4000 steps), and at that rate you could maybe get 250 days of wear out of your fashion sneakers, if you're comfortable with them showing some wear and tear. But that's still less than a year if you're wearing them frequently.

I get 2-3 years of heavy wear from sneakers. It is the soles or outers that breakdown or show hard wear first, since I put inserts (Superfeet) in almost all my footwear. I agree that with standard linings or supports, even ‘good’ running shoes - 6-8 months of frequent wear or 500 miles, is the max life.

Hmm, a couple years maybe? Hard to say as I have more than one pair that I rotate between. I do not ever track wears or mileage. I’ve also replaced the insoles in some of them with more rigid superfeet or similar ones, which are much longer lasting than the softer foam ones that come standard in many “lifestyle”/fashion (as opposed to strictly athletic) sneakers. I have actually also worn holes through the uppers of fabric sneakers!

I just checked my spreadsheets and the two pairs I retired most recently (AllBirds and Chucks, both because of wear) were at 135 and 138 wears.

ETA: I did replace the insoles in the AllBirds once.

Hmm. Hard to say because I have a nice little collection for variety, don’t wear them every day, and tend to spread the wear around. I have silver Cole Haans from several years ago that are looking a bit past their prime but probably have 100 wears by now, so that seems very reasonable.

My running and hiking shoes are a whole other story. I just replaced a pair of Brooks trail runners I bought last summer because they’re getting so beat up. The outsides don’t look too bad after a washing, but I can tell from how they feel that the support inside is breaking down. But those probably had 300+ miles on them.
